I have just booted to Puppy (for the first time in my life) on a 6 y/o amd type with a 40Gb HD, Ram: 512.I would like to make a permanent install of puppy onto the HD, I have read various pieces on how to install, defraging, repartitioning, differing file systems. However, i am a bit lost. The computer will be used for e-mail, web browsing, and watching the odd film (films installed on the drive) - I am unsure as to the best combination of file types and partition in order to keep puppy happy and keep some compatibility with the world outside of linux.
For instance, could i have a small partition with the puppy install and setting, and the rest on a format that would be compatible with windows/mac/linux? If so, how do I do this, pls bare in mind that my windows install is running but incomplete. I have the feeling this will be a really simple problem for someone to help me with,

I'm running Ubuntu 9.1 server on an PII Compaq. Read an article "Samba: How to share files for your LAN without user/password" [URL] and some others and can see and pull up files, can't change or delete. Here is my smb.conf:
# Sample configuration file for the Samba suite for Debian GNU/Linux.
# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
# smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
# here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options most of which
# are not shown in this example
# Some options that are often worth tuning have been included as
# commented-out examples in this file.
# - When such options are commented with ";", the proposed setting
# differs from the default Samba behaviour
# - When commented with "#", the proposed setting is the default
# behaviour of Samba but the option is considered important
# enough to be mentioned here .....

I am new to Linux and I am trying to install puppy on an old IBM thinkpad 600X (10gb hd, 196mb ram) When installing puppy from a cd, it loads up and does the kernel stuff before "Searching for Puppy files in computer disk drives" - this takes about 10 minutes before saying "pup_421.sfs not found. Dropping out to initial ramdisk console" then it goes to "/bin/sh can't access tty; jon control turned off". then it stays like that and doesn't continue.

I`am just trying to connect Samba with ldap to make it simpler for the users to log in. We have already attached squid, so by that we thought it would be easy to do the same with samba. I think we did something wrong with the ldap config for the os with is btw:
Quote:
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (x86_64)
VERSION = 11
PATCHLEVEL = 1
We added
Quote:
ldap admin dn = cn=xxx,o=xxx

I have to rename a group of machines in my little samba domain (tbd backend) but there is an ugly bug that makes this impossible. have set 'rename user script' variable corectly, also checked all configurations. When i change computer name in my windows box, it shows an error saying something like "Error calling remote procedure"Looking on server side, username for the machine gets correctly changed in /usr/passwd, and also in samba database. But samba log says:

I made a Ubuntu server and it is pretty cool. I had a windows computer that I could copy and paste files to and from over the network. What you did is just find it in My Network and the files were available there. How do I make Ubuntu or Samba act like that?

I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on my laptop which is wirelessly connected to the router. I have a PC which is Windows XP that is connected wired to the router. Now - I understand that Ubuntu is secure out of the box and so there is no need to worry about configurations. However, a past couple of updates in Ubuntu and I am seeing updates for Samba.I understand that Samba is used for file transfer between Windows and Linux.
Is Samba turned off by defult when Ubuntu is installed - despite having a WinXP computer connected to the router? Is there any way to make sure that Samba is turned off on my Ubuntu laptop?I don't want to transfer any files between my laptop and WinXP. If Samba is enabled, then a Firewall is needed to be configured (I assume), and to me that is sort of pointless with Ubuntu. For arguments sake, if Samba was enabled on my Ubuntu laptop - what would happen to my security?

How do I make ntlmv2 and 128 bit encryption work with Samba. i.e. I have a Win 2008/Win7/Vista box with standard settings i.e. forced using ntlmv2 and 128 bit encryption that I want to connect to a Linux server running Samba (RHEL6 in this case). Now if you google you it says Samba should support ntlmv2 with settings like this:
lanman auth = no
ntlm auth = no
client lanman auth = no
client ntlmv2 auth = yes
However even with 128 bit encryption turned off on the Win box it still doesn't work. We use "security = server". Is it maybe a requirement that we need to use security domain instead for ntlmv2 to work? Reading further in man smb.conf.5 "client ntlmv2 auth = yes" is "This parameter determines whether or not smbclient will attempt to authenticate itself to servers using the NTLMv2 encrypted password response." so clearly it's not affecting our samba server.
Reading even further in man smb.conf.5 it says "If this option (lanman auth), and ntlm auth are both disabled, then only NTLMv2 logins will be permited". Why is it then that you need to force NTLM auth in Win2008?
NTLMv2 is only compatible with "security=domain". This means that even if you set "lanman auth=no", and "ntlm auth=no" it will still only auth with NTLM... Here is the Q from Andrew Bartlett * "Use 'security=domain'. NTLM2 session security is not compatible with 'security=server'."
In order to use "security=domain" you need to use the net command to join the windows domain and for that you will need the AD administrator account password which you will most likely not have. However the question still reminds if you would to join the domain would the NTLMv2 work over 128 bit encystations or would you need to disable that one still?

When trying to install a new printer I can't get the samba to show under the network printer list. I even tried the "localhost" method & it still doesn't show. Samba is running fine & I can navigate to my shares. Even running the printer config. in the terminal result in no errors & no list.
Anyone have any ideas? This is the first I've encountered this... not even to sure what to google.

On Windows 7, I have VirtualBox running Linux (Ubuntu 8.04), with Samba set up so that the Windows host can access it. But if the virtual machine is shut down & restored, or rebooted, the Windows Network no longer shows it. I've tried refreshing many times, restarting Samba, disabling/enabling the virtual network adapter, and running the succession of commands ipconfig /release, ipconfig /flushdns, & ipconfig /renew, but none worked. As a last resort I could restart the host itself, but is there a better way?

I'd like to set up a fileserver for myself and a few trusted individuals. I'm computer savvy and I use various linux servers frequently for work, but this is my first time trying to setup my own. Is it possible to have a Samba server setup so it is both secure and facing the Internet? Two questions:
Will opening Samba ports make my default Ubuntu server particularly vulnerable to penetration? More than having an SSH server running? Does Samba/ can Samba be configured to encrypt traffic or is it sent plainly? If so, does Windows and Mac support this secure communication?
If not, what would you suggest? I'd like to achieve something like a network drive and at a difficulty level that my parents could use this if they really wanted to. I will be storing things like financial information and tax returns, but no weapons-grade secrets.

I have a LAN of about 70 computers that I would like to share media files between. I have gotten to the point with Samba that I can view the files without a username/password from client PC's. I would like to make all the folders read only except for one which will be writable for everyone. The thing that I am having a hard time with is allowing a couple of administrators (on Windows 7 machines) read/write access for all files/folders. I am completely new to Ubuntu and Samba so please make explanations thorough. Here is /etc/samba/smb.conf file:

I want to setup a Linux File Server for a small windows network (around 50 users). I do know that I am gona need Smb service/pkg for that. I haven't used Samba for a while now and as per the best of my knowledge, entire communication (including usernames and passwords) between a samba server & windows client machines will be plain text. Is there any way to secure all this communication??
Secondly, if i remember correctly, MS windows wont let me mount more than one samba shares as network disk when all my shares can be accessed by different smb users with different passwords?? is there a solution to this problem? OR may be if there is any other package available for this purpose so that i wont have to use samba?

I am trying to implement a NAS running Debian to replace the Windows 2003 file server. We implemented the system and we integrated it with the active directory. Is it possible to manage the access rights using windows tools and get the same amount of detail(not the right word) on access. As an example, we have the following folder structure:
Teams&Projects All users list, admins full
Team1 All users list, admins full, some users modify
Project1 All users no access, admins full, some modify, some list
I have read some articles on the internet that this is possible but I do not have enough information to implement this.

I just installed SLES 11.2 X86_64 and have SMB Server started after adding 2 lines to smb.conf:1. NTMLv2 = Yes2. name resolve order = wins bcast host lmhostsThere are also 02 new DWORD lines I add to Win7 clientsHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesLanManWorkstationParameters 1.DomainCompatibilityMode = 12. DNSNameResolutionRequired = 0Of course a few number of modifications I made from Yast to enable SMB Server and Client, and bcast as well. Now I am able to join my Linux Domain without error at first reboot from win7, but it seems spending a long time about 30 secs for auth. even I test on a very fast network system, all with core quad 3GHZ CPU and 4GB DDR2I would like to mention here that before I made the above changes I did a lot of different modifications onto my win7 clients (I found many suggestions online), and all seems mess up and never work; Then I had to reinstall win7 from scratch and just add 02 lines as above, but it works.
