Installation :: Unable To Run Ubuntu / Get Around This?
Dec 17, 2010
I just got a HP G56 108SA and i was planning to install Ubunti 10.10 on it but ive yet to be able to even get the system to boot.
I downloaded the ISO of ubuntu 10.10 64bit, burnt it with nero and ran the disk it starts to load and you see the ubuntu text with the scrolling blocks under it and after a few mins i notice the DVD drive is no longer flashing but the screen still shows ubuntu with the scrolling loading graphic.
Left it for 20 mins and still doing the same thing, anyone know how to get around this?

I cannot install Kubuntu (or Unbuntu) 10.4 on my husband's computer. I have spent 5 hours on this and cannot get anywhere. I am deeply frustrated. The iso I burned to CD is good (works on 2 other computers). His computer will not boot from USB, no matter what I do to the drive order in BIOS. After loading the blue screen with the Kubuntu logo on it (and the blue-white dots), the screen changes to black and shows the following text:
BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built-in shell (ash) (initrafs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system.
He really needs to get rid of WinXP. Kubuntu is what I have on my computer (and love it!). Here is some info about his computer:
OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation

I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 again on my PC after a long time. Everything was working fine. No problems at all. After running all the necessary updates, I wanted to install Adobe Flash. This I did by going to Adobe's site. I selected the APT version for 9.04+. It was installing fine UNTIL there was a power cut. Since then I have been trying out various methods of repair suggested in these forums. But again and again get the same message:Quote:
W: GPG error: http://archive.canonical.com jaunty Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 40976EAF437D05B5 Ubuntu Archive Automatic Signing Key <ftpmaster@ubuntu.com>
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems

I am not able to finish the last step in the installation of Ubuntu 10.10. It asks me to fill in "Who are you?" information, but the forward button is not activated and I am not able to click it. I have tried to burn a new image cd and try again but I get the same error. My computer is an Acer Aspire 5220. I attach a picture of the screen.

I am unable to change the installation location for the boot loader when installing Fedora 12 in the graphical installation mode. The 'Change device' button does nothing when I click on it during installation. I'd like to install the boot loader on my /boot partition. Is there some kind of bug that is preventing me from doing this?I am trying to install from the Fedora 12 386 DVD.

I have an older dell CSX laptop that I would like to load up with ubuntu or kubuntu... or anything other than XP. The problem is that the laptop does not have the option to boot from USB, I don't have a CD/Floppy drive to attach to the media bay and I don't have a pcmia that will PXE boot... So, do I have any other options? I really don't want to go purchase anything for this laptop because it's old, but if I could get it reloaded with anything it would be ok for a netbook... It will boot into XP, but its very sluggish.

I've tried to test 10.04. One, by upgrading a working KK installation. The other, was a fresh install. Both were as VMWare virtual machines. Both installs had the same problem. The install/upgrade process goes smoothly. When the GUI logon screen appears & I click on the user name, I'm unable to type in the password box. Nothing appears. If I then click "continue", the result is "authentication failure".

1) I thought linux (or Ubuntu) would tell me somehow when there are new updates I need to install, like Windows does. But I never see any indication. I used this software name "Ubuntu Tweak" to check for update and found 32 new packages. Why wasn't I told about these? Did I accidentally turn something off and I need to turn it back on? Or do I have to configure something special?
2) How can I find out what features or bug fixes these updates provide. For example, one of the files was named "linux-image-2.6.32-22-generic". I'm guessing this is part of the core system. I would really like to know what changed in this and the other 31 updates.

I am trying to install ubuntu 10.04 64 bit on a toshiba satellite L505 that has windows 7 64 bit. When I try to boot from the cd I burned I get that the file /ubuntu/winnt/wubildr.mbr is not available and to repair with the windows cd.But when I checked the command prompt in windows 7, it is there. I did a repair twice and it still won't boot completely. One time for loading the try ubuntu before installing, it stopped at child_objects and sat there for 10 minutes.I also did try the 32 bit on a 64 bit machine but still nothing.I have loaded previous versions of ubuntu for relatives with no problem.

I'm currently trying to upgrade to 10.04, but I'm experiencing a problem. Currently I am encountering the following error message when trying to upgrade: "An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: The package 'ubuntu-desktop' is marked for removal but it is in the removal blacklist."
The message directed me to /var/log/dist-upgrade. I looked at the apt.log file and I discovered the following at the end of the file:
"Investigating ubuntu-desktop
Package ubuntu-desktop has broken Depends on libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio
Considering libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio 2 as a solution to ubuntu-desktop 0

Code:

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop edition 32 bit using a usb stick.[URL]Then I made the usb bootable using universal USB installer (have also tried Unetbootin). After restarting, it starts to install but always gets stuck at Step 3, where it asks for the keyboard layout. It simply do not go to Step 4.It also detects an application problem "Sorry the program "parted server" closed unexpectedly". I tried to report it, but it does not reports the error. The live version seems to be working fine. I can run firefox and some simple applications on it.

I downloaded the Ubuntu .iso and burnt it on to a CD. It boots fine on all systems apart from the one I am trying to install it on. This laptop doesn't have a floppy disc drive or the option to boot from a USB pen drive. I've taken the Hard disk out of it and used a USB drive caddy to connect it as a USB drive on a system running XP. How do I go about Installing Ubuntu onto the this USB drive so I can put it back in the laptop as an internal HDD. I've tried unetbootin to install the iso to the USB HDD but when I put it in the laptop as internal drive it doesn't boot.

I tried to update my ubuntu from 8.04 to 10.04. Because I couldn't find the update in the update manager I started the update with the following:
<Alt> <F2>
update-manager --devel-release
After checking for packages to update I first updated all the programms listed in the update manager. After this I started the update of the OS. After some checks the download of the new files started. It took appr. 2 hours. After this I got he message about some applications, which are no longer supported. So far no problems. Than I started the update of the system. After some further preparartions the update stopps with the following error message:
Die Aktualisierungen konnten nicht installiert werden
Fehler beim Anwenden
'E:Couldn't configure pre-depend jre for openoffice.org-writer2latex, probably a dependency cyle.'
Ursprnglicher Systemzustand wird wiederhergestellt
I tried a restart of the update as well as a rebboot of the system and restart of the update. Both failed with the same error.
My system:
AMD64 (ubuntu 32 bit version)
Grub with 'Ubuntu' and Windows XP
For me the only way to get Ubuntu 10.04 running seems to install it from CD/DVD.

I had the Rad hat enterprise installed on to the computer which already had XP using a dual boot system. When I saw that red hat needs an activation, I had to remove it from the computer, but was not aware of how to uninstall and OS. So, I went to the XP OS and selected the hard disk space where Red hat was installed and once after that deleted it.
The problem now is that, when I restarted the computer, I get only a black window with a message as Grub in it, Now I am not even able to get to my Windows OS also. Note: while installation, one of the option as Kdump boot failure recovery was checked as I remember.

I've updated all the software sources, changed my country location to US, and even generated a new sources.list file, but my update manager never displays an option to make an upgrade to 10.04.1
Here are my current settings:
Code:
###### Ubuntu Main Repos
deb http://pt.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid main restricted universe multiverse
###### Ubuntu Update Repos

I had Windows XP installed it. I created a USB bootable memory stick for the latest version of the netbook version of Ubuntu, everything installed correctly, but when I turn on my netbook to the boot screen and select Windows XP it just goes to a blank screen with a line, and it does nothing. I installed Windows XP via a USB memory stick as well.

I have just downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop/Netbook Remix Release Candidate and made a live usb with Pendrivelinux. Then I boot it in my Acer Aspire One A110 (8gb SSD model) and I get this screen:
SYSLINUX 3.86 2010-04-01 EBIOS Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H. Peter Anvin et al
Nothing more. Should I just wait until 10.10.10 for the finished 10.10? Or is there any way fixing this?
