Hardware :: Tpuchpad Not Working On Netbook?
Dec 7, 2010
I have got a new Netbook(OEM, HongKong made) which came with pre-installed Ubuntu-8.04 and its touchpad was working perfectly well. I installed opensuse-11.3 from a bootable usb created on debian-lenny platform by the terminal command
#dd if=opensusexxxx.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=4M
Installation went without hitch and all the packages are behaving fine. But the touchpad has stopped responding and I have to use an optical mouse which is a botheration.

i am currently using ubuntu 10.10 desktop edition and i recently noticed the net book edition option in the login screen. i googled a bit on it an liked the screenshots. so decided to give it a try. i dunno what the problem is but after i login, i just get a plain screen ( no application panel or the side panel )but the options work.. i just don't see them on the screen. like when i click on the left top corner, i get the proper window and i can start apps from it.. i just cant see the panel or the side bar. and the other problem is that after any app is launched, i wont get the title bar also.. btw, here is a screenshot of the desktop. notice the bands at the top and the side. those are supposed to be my panels.. but no icons. if i click on the extreme top left i get the menu for selecting options like web music etc.

While installing the openSuSE on my Netbook (Acer AspireOne D250) with a bootable thumbdrive Live image, the installation seemed to go fine, but after the installation was completed, there was no "network"! I checked and the system auto-sensed the drivers, but when I go into the network, even trying to manually set up the IP info, Yast reports NO NETWORK running!!
I then went out and bought a USB CD-ROM drive and installed using the boot CD (Network install) on the external USB CD-ROM drive. It booted up fine, and installed "RIGHT OFF OF THE NETWORK", but when the install was through, I could not access the network. Same error: NO NETWORK RUNNING!! Now I've installed openSuSE on this unit before (v11.4) and it worked fine (after I changed the wireless driver to the legacy driver) but this time it's NOT working!! My 13yr old son uses the Netbook, and was so excited to get to use LINUX instead of Windows ... until now.

I using clonezilla-live-1.2.5-35-i686 to create an image of my Advent 4211 netbook, this netbook is essentially a MSI Wind. The image is to be saved to an external USB drive. I have used Clonezilla before with success, and a few failures, hope this isn't another. The LiveCD boots fine, I select the first video mode, it then tries to start but reports an 'undefined video mode number :317' it then offers the option to carry on or 'Enter' to try other options or 'Space' to continue, I have tried both options but they end up with the same out come, which is the following.
It does a bunch of hardware detection, 'usbcore' etc etc, then gets stuck at 'libata version 3.00 loaded' for around 5 minutes, then eventually moves onto 'clocksource tsc unstable (delta = -6575758ns) Time:hpet clocksource has been installed', stick on this for around 3 minutes and then eventually I end up with'/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off' Is there a solution to this? Or just have to accept that it will now work with my hardware? The odd thing here is that people have used Clonezilla successfully with this type of Netbook, I also read that people and issue but offered no solution.

I installed Archlinux yesterday on my Aspire One netbook. I installed fluxbux window manager with the ROX file manager/desktop manager.Everything was working fine until I was walking through a guide to set up the Fn keysto use the keyboard hotkeys for changing the brightness and audio settings here: [URL]I used xmodmap to set additional short cuts. Every since, I can't use my keyboard when I run 'startx'. My laptop touch mouse is working but I noticed the cursor speed has slowed down drasticly since I input the above changes.
I tried putting in 'setxkbmap no' in my ~/.xinitrc, 'no' was the language which is set up in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf and was working before. I also reverted to a back-up of my xorg.conf which I had saved a few hours before, which also didn't work. What could the problem could be here? How can I ensure my keyboard is being properly initialise when I start up Xorg/fluxbox?

I've installed successfully the ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix on my DELL Latitude 430.Everything work out of the box except the wifi, I cannot find a way to get working.Using the lshw command, I can see that the interface is listed, but status is disabled. On the Network Manager, status I get is device not ready. As a FYI, bluetooth seems working perfect (I've not tried to pair with any device)as this is the only roadblock I face before enjoying Ubuntu on my laptop.

I am having trouble installing Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix edition onto a Acer Aspire one netbook. I am attempting to install the OS from a 16GB PNY usb drive w/ the usb-universal installer and ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix .ISO
The reoccurring problem that I am encountering is that when I boot from the USB-drive and begin to install everything seems to be working, and then it is stuck at the menu where it asks who are you?; and of course i have filled in everything asked and at the bottom where you can look at what its doing in the terminal/detail section all it says is ready when you are, and the forward tap is unselectable.

Why i cant change from 800x480 to 1024x600, that this model of EEE pc doesnt support anything higher than 800x480 at the 10:1 ratio...
Firstly my question is, is it ACTUALLY possible to 'overclock' this type of netbook to run a higher res?
Im running ubtuntu netbook remix 10.04 and am new to linux (again, so sorry) so be nice, and ive tried getting my head around this 'sudo' stuff, and the xorg.conf file (which is nowhere to be found) and ive even tried a program calld astray but im pretty sure ive exhausted my patience as trying to self-teach . . .
And ive also tried to much around with xrandr or whatever that command was.. but i cant really get my head around it, and it kept telling me the resolution didnt exist ect...

For the past 2hrs I have been struggling to make KDE launch plasma-dekstop instead of plasma-netbook, but all in vain.I removed, then purged plasma-netbook and plasma-netbook-default-settings packages but after logging out and re-logging in the Netbook UI was back! After restarting the system now I can't even seem to get the KDM. I am greeted with a black screen.--- I restarted the system again and the nasty little bugger is back again! This is so frustrating. How do I get plasma-desktop to load instead?---- Great now I can see that plasma-desktop and plasma-netbook both are running simultaneously! netbook on top of desktop. So my final Q is how do I stop plasma-netbook from loading?

I installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 and immediately noticed the keyboard of my eeepc 1000HE was abnormally warm. Since I dual boot XP I booted to XP and found the fan running faster to compensate for the previous heat. This did not happen on Ubuntu-the fan just was barely running. I had to place the side of the netbook in order to feel the fan running. I issued "sensors" in terminal and it showed 67 degrees C for the cpu temp. Is the latest Ubuntu such a resource hug that it heats up the CPU?

Im a new linux user and so far im loving it, problem is i just tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix onto my Compaq mini 311 (via usb) and at first i couldnt even install from the flash stick...finally managed to by formatting the flash with an HP tool and then creating the bootable Live OS with "Linux Live USB creator 2.6."
I selected to use the whole Hard disk to install (the hard disk was empty anyway as i recently formated the drive which had windows 7 on it)
The the installation completed successfully but the problem is that after rebooting the OS wouldnt boot, leaving me with a flashing cursor or _ on the top left of the screen...
I have tried everything i could think of, using different Usb creators, formatting the hard drive before re-installing but for some reason im still left with the same blinking cursor after every install.
I have just installed the regular version of ubuntu 9.04 which works perfectly after installing but id much rather use the netbook version of 10.04
(I assume the issue has something to do with the bootloader but im completely new to the topic so cant really troubleshoot)

I have Linux Mint Debian Edition installed on my main laptop so far and loving it. I tried going to Debian Sid but the video card kept messing up on me before I could fully keep it up so I had to keep backtracking. I figured I would put Debian on the netbook first so that I could get a grasp of how the setup works with getting everything configured right (since lmde does do more of the work for you). The thing is I don't see any need for having Mint on any of my systems...besides the need of having it set up right...wich is why LMDE is still on the main laptop. The horrid green was the first to go for me and then installing GnoMenu since my wife prefers it as a menu anyways.
Anyways I'm rambling and off topic but here's what I want to get done right. I have an Acer Aspire one that has one gig of ram on it. I want to get Debian Sid 32bit with gnome running on it. Whats the best way you would install Debian on this little laptop (used to doing cd installs but this one has none) and quickly configure it for graphics so that Cario-Dock and Compiz/Emerald run smoothly. I don't run any games on either machine (except if you count multi-user-dungeons ) so this is the extent of the graphics I'll need besides watching videos from time to time from NetFlicks.

I'm using Opensuse 11.4 with KDE and have set the workspace type to "Netbook". Lately I have been experiencing complete freezes of the workspace (the horizontal panel and all it's widgets and elements, the activity pages and even yakuake won't respond to it's hotkey) but the Alt+tab and the Ctrl+Alt+F12345678 key combinations and other programs that might be already running (like firefox and Akregator) don't experience any problems and keep functioning uninterrupted. Sometimes the workspace remains unresponsive indefinitely and in other cases some prodding and left-right click spamming seems to remove the problem in some weird magic way... I usually notice that this freeze has happened after i decide to take a break from browsing with firefox and try to close it thru the 'application control settings' widget. That's when i find out that it's buttons can't be pressed and with an alt+tab to the desktop I see that I can't interact with it in any way. Most of the time i have to reboot my computer through the Ctrl+Alt+F1 terminal...
I also have to mention that i recently started using tumbleweed but the problem was there before that and nothing seems to have changed after the update from the tumbleweed repository.

I installed 8.04 on my EeePC 2005. I use the Windows dual boot option. The netbook's hard drive was factory set with two partitions c and d. Windows XP is on c; I put Ubuntu on d. In Windows, I have both wireless and ethernet (sp?) working fine.In Ubuntu, I have no wireless and no land line. The manual connection wizard pop-up shows no networks anywhere. How can I get Ubuntu connected? Would it be simpler to load another distro like Easy Peasy on top of Ubuntu? Or should I delete Ubuntu and start over? Or is there an easy fix for 8.04?

I could use some help running fsck. My SDA1 appears to be having issues. I cant get my netbook to load.
I popped in a USB drive with Ubuntu on it so I could try to run fsck on it, but I ran into an issue.
According to Ubuntu, this drive is using the "ext3/ext4" file system. I read an online guide for using fsck and it mentioned that I must designate what file system I am running or it will default to ext2 and corrupt my files. So what command should I run so that fsck knows that I have the ext3/ext4 file system?
Also, could someone check to see if the commands I am running are correct (these are starting from the terminal from the USB drive)?
# init 1
# umount /dev/sda1
# fsck.ext3 /dev/sda1
The third command is where I am confused as to what I should type.

I have been playing with Maverick (and this was the same on earlier versions). When I am on my netbook (a 10.1" compaq mini with resolution set at the highest setting - 1024x600) I cannot see the whole window. This happens frequently in Eveolution where the bottom of the window is 'missing' so I cannot click ok when changing setting ect. This is extremely annoying and it is the only reason why I am still running Windows on my netbook.
