Debian :: Best Way To Install To Netbook?

Oct 22, 2010

I have Linux Mint Debian Edition installed on my main laptop so far and loving it. I tried going to Debian Sid but the video card kept messing up on me before I could fully keep it up so I had to keep backtracking. I figured I would put Debian on the netbook first so that I could get a grasp of how the setup works with getting everything configured right (since lmde does do more of the work for you). The thing is I don't see any need for having Mint on any of my systems...besides the need of having it set up right...wich is why LMDE is still on the main laptop. The horrid green was the first to go for me and then installing GnoMenu since my wife prefers it as a menu anyways.

Anyways I'm rambling and off topic but here's what I want to get done right. I have an Acer Aspire one that has one gig of ram on it. I want to get Debian Sid 32bit with gnome running on it. Whats the best way you would install Debian on this little laptop (used to doing cd installs but this one has none) and quickly configure it for graphics so that Cario-Dock and Compiz/Emerald run smoothly. I don't run any games on either machine (except if you count multi-user-dungeons ) so this is the extent of the graphics I'll need besides watching videos from time to time from NetFlicks.

Ubuntu :: Installing 10.10 Netbook Remix Edition Onto A Acer Aspire One Netbook?

Jan 18, 2011

I am having trouble installing Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix edition onto a Acer Aspire one netbook. I am attempting to install the OS from a 16GB PNY usb drive w/ the usb-universal installer and ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix .ISO

The reoccurring problem that I am encountering is that when I boot from the USB-drive and begin to install everything seems to be working, and then it is stuck at the menu where it asks who are you?; and of course i have filled in everything asked and at the bottom where you can look at what its doing in the terminal/detail section all it says is ready when you are, and the forward tap is unselectable.

General :: Resolution Overclocking Using Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04 On An Asus Eee 4G Netbook

Why i cant change from 800x480 to 1024x600, that this model of EEE pc doesnt support anything higher than 800x480 at the 10:1 ratio...

Firstly my question is, is it ACTUALLY possible to 'overclock' this type of netbook to run a higher res?

Im running ubtuntu netbook remix 10.04 and am new to linux (again, so sorry) so be nice, and ive tried getting my head around this 'sudo' stuff, and the xorg.conf file (which is nowhere to be found) and ive even tried a program calld astray but im pretty sure ive exhausted my patience as trying to self-teach . . .

And ive also tried to much around with xrandr or whatever that command was.. but i cant really get my head around it, and it kept telling me the resolution didnt exist ect...

For the past 2hrs I have been struggling to make KDE launch plasma-dekstop instead of plasma-netbook, but all in vain.I removed, then purged plasma-netbook and plasma-netbook-default-settings packages but after logging out and re-logging in the Netbook UI was back! After restarting the system now I can't even seem to get the KDM. I am greeted with a black screen.--- I restarted the system again and the nasty little bugger is back again! This is so frustrating. How do I get plasma-desktop to load instead?---- Great now I can see that plasma-desktop and plasma-netbook both are running simultaneously! netbook on top of desktop. So my final Q is how do I stop plasma-netbook from loading?

Ubuntu Installation :: ASUS Netbook Heating Up When Using Netbook 10.04

Apr 30, 2010

I installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 and immediately noticed the keyboard of my eeepc 1000HE was abnormally warm. Since I dual boot XP I booted to XP and found the fan running faster to compensate for the previous heat. This did not happen on Ubuntu-the fan just was barely running. I had to place the side of the netbook in order to feel the fan running. I issued "sensors" in terminal and it showed 67 degrees C for the cpu temp. Is the latest Ubuntu such a resource hug that it heats up the CPU?

General :: Trying To Install U 10.10 In My Netbook

Mar 7, 2011

I will install Ubvuntu 10.10 in my netoobk, which came with a 320 GB HD already partitioned, 100GB with W7 and 220 just formatted.I wish to install Ubuntu in the 220 GB partition, the question is, where will be the boot loader (with the options Windows 7 or Linux Ubuntu 10.10) be should be installed?I'm running the U10.10 Live CD for installation, in Allocated drive space, options are:

1. Install alongside other operating systems
2. Erase and use the entire disk
3. Specify partitions manually (advanced)

I chose Ext4, then mount point as "/", right? Then it says "you have not selected any partitions for use as swap space..."Only if I select /dev/sda, the New partition table buttons is enabled, when clicked,"You have selected an entire device to partition, if you proceed...then all current partitions will be removed"

Ubuntu :: Asus Netbook: Which OS To Install?

Oct 29, 2010

I'm completely new to Ubuntu and Linux. Previously, my only experience is that I've successfully installed Ubuntu on a computer that I was giving away to a friend of mine. So now I've got a refurb netbook coming in the mail in a day or two. It comes with Windows 7 Starter, which I'm assuming is complete crud.*

So assuming it's a good idea to replace that with Ubuntu, my question is, which one? I see that there is now a pretty prominent download link for something called Ubuntu Netbook. But I also see that there's something called Ubuntu Moblin Remix, and I've seen people on the Web referring to just "Ubuntu Remix."

Which one do I want to install? Are there features in regular Ubuntu that I'll miss because they're not in these alternate netbook versions? Since I'm a complete noob when it comes to Linux, I will want to be learning as much as I can. Hopefully using one of these low calorie versions of Ubuntu would not hamper my learning process?

I suppose I should tell you what I'm using the computer for: What I plan to do with my netbook is mainly cruise the Web and watch videos. My desktop computer is an iMac running OS X 10.5.8 (as well as Windows 7 Ultimate on its Boot Camp partition), and I would like to be able to have the netbook and the iMac be able to network with each other so I can copy movie files onto to the netbook's hard drive as easily as possible. Is this a correct assumption? I've seen it implied that Win 7 Starter uses less system resources than the Home or Professional versions and is therefore better for netbooks. Should I maybe consider just keeping Win 7 on there? To me, the most obvious benefit of ditching Windows is that I won't need to have anti-virus software always running in the background and slowing things down.

Ubuntu :: Install On A Netbook With Win7?

Jan 17, 2011

I've just recently bought myself a netbook (Asus 1015PEM) and I've been trying to get rid of Win7 that comes with it and install a fresh copy of Ubuntu or OpenSuse. The thing is my netbook just can't seem to be able to detect the Pendrive when I reboot. I've already changed the boot order but nothing happens. The pendrive is NOT damaged and the netbook does detect it when already on windows screen.

Note that I do not want to install Ubuntu/OpenSuse as a Windows aplication. I want to wipe Windows and install one of those linux distros.

SUSE :: Netbook Won't Install OpenSUSE 11.3

Sep 3, 2010

I have a Samsung NC-10, installed Win 7 on it and after about 3 months realised that the Intel Atom processor couldn't cope very well. I defected to linux but I can't get the damn thing to boot. I downloaded the iso of openSUSE 11.3 and opened it with Daemon Tools Lite. In my first attempt, I copied and pasted the image using windows explorer onto an 8GB flash drive. I got a "Disk Error" message. (I did change the boot order so that the USB HDD had priority). I got my dad in to help and he formatted the drive to FAT32 and used xcopy in CMD to put the iso image onto the disk. Then I got the "Remove disks or other media. Press any key to restart" message. I'm annoyed now because I have spent my evenings doing this for the best part of 4 days.

Debian Installation :: Get ARM On Elovo X6-13V21 Netbook Based On WM8880?

Dec 10, 2015

I managed to find an ISO for the Debian ARM installer, but what to do with it. My netbook doesn't have a CD-ROM drive, and all the installation instructions talk about something called U-boot, which I don't think my machine has. There is a possibility that my netbook may be able to boot from the SD card slot, because I know the WM8650 by the same chipset manufacturer had the ability to boot up using something called wmt_scriptcmd in the SD card's root if you simply turned the device on with the card inserted. How this script works, and I really have no ROMs designed for this device to test with. Thus far, I can't even install an alternative version of Android on here, let alone Debian. There is no clear idea of how to even boot into the installer.

I'm currently running a rooted version of Android 4.2 that came with my netbook, complete with BusyBox. I've been unable to find any decent installation instructions, because most tutorials assume you want to set up a chrooted environment and be content with using Linux via a VNC viewer and a terminal application. I actually want to have Linux running by itself, and not on top of Android. Most sites that deal with ARM are completely useless because they assume you're using a brand-name smart phone or tablet with a documented recovery procedure rather than an unbranded Chinese netbook with no touchscreen.

Am I basically stuck with the version of Android that came with my netbook because the device is too obscure and undocumented to have custom ROMs?

OpenSUSE Install :: Compatibility With Datawind Netbook?

Jul 12, 2010

I am looking into buying a cheap netbook and saw the Datawind Ubi-Surfer (e.g., Datawind Ubi-Surfer Netbook | [URL]). It comes with a pre-installed Windows CE which I will be keen to erase as soon as possible.

The spec is low, as can be expected: 128Mb ram (1GB flash), no optical drive (which poses the question of how to install openSUSE), but 3xUSB and ethernet are included.

I do not intend to use it for any processing. It is to run java applications and play music from an external USB hard drive.

Does anyone know whether this little box can cope with openSUSE 11.2 (or 11.3)? and if so, how do I install it without an optical drive?

OpenSUSE Install :: Getting 11.3 On A Usb Flash Stick On A Netbook?

Jan 26, 2011

I want to install 11.3 on a usb flash stick on a netbook.the internal harddisk should be completely unaffected, meaning

- when the usb stick is plugged in, bios should boot 11.3 from the stick

- when the stick is not plugged in, bios should boot from the internal hard disk

I am unsure how the boot options in yast have to be set to achieve that.I changed the order of the harddisks to /dev/sdb (=the usb stick) being the first.I selected /dev/sdb3 (The root partition of the to-be-installed 11.3) as user defined root partition.do I have to select "start from MBR" and/or "start from root partition"? is there more to do to make the usb stick bootable?
