Ubuntu :: 10.10 Won't Shut Down On Netbook?

Oct 12, 2010

I have an Asus Eee PC 1001HA netbook with a recent installation of Ubuntu 10.10. When I press the shut down button it freezes but with the following command there is no problem:sudo halt I have tried changing a line in /etc/default/grub as some threads said:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=force"

With no success (updating grub, of course).

Fedora X86/64bit :: Running F11 I586 On Laptop / System Shut Off (not A Normal OS Shut Down, But A Sudden Power Off Without Warning)?

Oct 13, 2009

Offlate I installed F11 i586 on my laptop. F11 shares the hard disk with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The problem is that when running F11 (or even Ubuntu), my system shut off suddenly(not a normal OS shut down, but a sudden power off without any warning). This could have been a hardware trouble(heating) but it doesn't happen with Vista.
Machine specifications:
Maker: Toshiba
Model: Satellite L305D-S5881
AMD Turion X2 Dual Core Mobile Processor RM-70
3072 MB 800 MHz SDRAM
I don't want to open up my machine unnecessarily, if it isn't a hardware issue.
I am not sure how to verify the bit length of the machine and the OS and does it create a compatibility issue ?
Your advise would be highly appreciated.

Ubuntu :: Installing 10.10 Netbook Remix Edition Onto A Acer Aspire One Netbook?

Jan 18, 2011

I am having trouble installing Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix edition onto a Acer Aspire one netbook. I am attempting to install the OS from a 16GB PNY usb drive w/ the usb-universal installer and ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix .ISO

The reoccurring problem that I am encountering is that when I boot from the USB-drive and begin to install everything seems to be working, and then it is stuck at the menu where it asks who are you?; and of course i have filled in everything asked and at the bottom where you can look at what its doing in the terminal/detail section all it says is ready when you are, and the forward tap is unselectable.

General :: Resolution Overclocking Using Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04 On An Asus Eee 4G Netbook

Aug 30, 2010

Why i cant change from 800x480 to 1024x600, that this model of EEE pc doesnt support anything higher than 800x480 at the 10:1 ratio...

Firstly my question is, is it ACTUALLY possible to 'overclock' this type of netbook to run a higher res?

Im running ubtuntu netbook remix 10.04 and am new to linux (again, so sorry) so be nice, and ive tried getting my head around this 'sudo' stuff, and the xorg.conf file (which is nowhere to be found) and ive even tried a program calld astray but im pretty sure ive exhausted my patience as trying to self-teach . . .

And ive also tried to much around with xrandr or whatever that command was.. but i cant really get my head around it, and it kept telling me the resolution didnt exist ect...

Ubuntu :: Can't Remove Plams-netbook From Kubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10?

Mar 7, 2010

For the past 2hrs I have been struggling to make KDE launch plasma-dekstop instead of plasma-netbook, but all in vain.I removed, then purged plasma-netbook and plasma-netbook-default-settings packages but after logging out and re-logging in the Netbook UI was back! After restarting the system now I can't even seem to get the KDM. I am greeted with a black screen.--- I restarted the system again and the nasty little bugger is back again! This is so frustrating. How do I get plasma-desktop to load instead?---- Great now I can see that plasma-desktop and plasma-netbook both are running simultaneously! netbook on top of desktop. So my final Q is how do I stop plasma-netbook from loading?

Ubuntu Installation :: ASUS Netbook Heating Up When Using Netbook 10.04

Apr 30, 2010

I installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 and immediately noticed the keyboard of my eeepc 1000HE was abnormally warm. Since I dual boot XP I booted to XP and found the fan running faster to compensate for the previous heat. This did not happen on Ubuntu-the fan just was barely running. I had to place the side of the netbook in order to feel the fan running. I issued "sensors" in terminal and it showed 67 degrees C for the cpu temp. Is the latest Ubuntu such a resource hug that it heats up the CPU?

Ubuntu :: Cant Boot Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix On Netbook

Sep 19, 2010

Im a new linux user and so far im loving it, problem is i just tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix onto my Compaq mini 311 (via usb) and at first i couldnt even install from the flash stick...finally managed to by formatting the flash with an HP tool and then creating the bootable Live OS with "Linux Live USB creator 2.6."

I selected to use the whole Hard disk to install (the hard disk was empty anyway as i recently formated the drive which had windows 7 on it)

The the installation completed successfully but the problem is that after rebooting the OS wouldnt boot, leaving me with a flashing cursor or _ on the top left of the screen...

I have tried everything i could think of, using different Usb creators, formatting the hard drive before re-installing but for some reason im still left with the same blinking cursor after every install.

I have just installed the regular version of ubuntu 9.04 which works perfectly after installing but id much rather use the netbook version of 10.04

(I assume the issue has something to do with the bootloader but im completely new to the topic so cant really troubleshoot)

Ubuntu :: Can't Shut Down UU 9.10

Jan 31, 2010

I have a Dell Latitude D610, installed Ubuntu 9.10 with wubi and Win XP professional. I had only one problem booting which was fixed immediately by meierfra, but now the Ubuntu won't shut down. The final message is "ubuntu 9.10 login", then the screen freezes.Oddly when I restart from Ubuntu it shuts down enough to reboot into either Windows or back into Ubuntu. To shut down from Ubuntu I'm now holding down the start switch until the machine stops. effective but inelegant.

Ubuntu :: 9.04 - Laptop Too Hot And Has To Shut Down

Jan 5, 2010

Recently I built a new computer, making my old laptop redundant, so I thought I'd turn it into a portable studio computer with linux. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 with the low latency kernal and the ubuntustudio audio packages. And while the system still has many other kinks I need to work out, my main issue is heat. Even when I'm running the official Ubuntu kernal rather than real-time one, I'll use the laptop for basic browsing and messaging.

Suddenly Ubuntu crashes with a warning saying that my laptop is too hot and has to shut down. The only way I've found around this is to run the laptop from cold with an external fan blow right onto the computer. I can still hear the fan working and airflow is totally unrestricted. If it helps, the laptop is 4 years old and is a Acer Ferrari 4000. I never had these issues running XP on it for the past 3 1/2 years and I'm relatively new to running a Linux system.

Ubuntu :: 9.10 Hangs On Shut Down

Jan 12, 2010

I was so pleased with Ubuntu (9.10) on my desktop that I installed it on my laptop, too. However, on the laptop (but not on the desktop) I cannot shut down properly. I get a black screen with the following text:

Ubuntu 9.10 (my computer name) ttyl (my computer name) login: (flashing cursor)

On one occasion I got:

Ubuntu 9.10 (my computer name) ttyl (my computer name) login: init: usplash main process (10187) killed by TERM signal

In either case it hangs there and does not completely shut down.

Ubuntu :: 'Shut Down' App On Panel Gone?

Mar 15, 2010

And I can't find it on the panel apps list:

It was there when I logged on this morning, it's not there now, instead replaced by '15, 16:54' (no that's not the time, it's to the left of my clock right where the session button normally is). There's a shut down button in the apps list but it's not the same as the original that was there...

EDIT: and now it's back. And in fact it WAS the time, it was the 15 (date) and time. Dunno what made it crash. A log out and it's back on.

Ubuntu :: Can't Shut Down Computer With GUI?

Mar 17, 2010

OK, so basically my problem is that I can't log out, shut down, or restart my computer through the GUI. The thing is, it used to work. Note: this started happening right after I put in the lock / logout widget, but it's really a pain to have to go through the Kickoff menu to lock the screen each time, and leaving my files, online accounts, and what's on my screen open to anyone who wants to snoop is not an option. I may have to just suck it up and lock the screen the old-fashioned way, but only as a last resort.

Configuration: An older Gateway (idk the exact specs) desktop machine with Windows XP and Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic (dual-boot)

Ubuntu :: Computer Does Not Shut Down Normally

May 2, 2010

Since a long time I have a problem when shutting down my computer. I have ubuntu 8.04 installed, and I do install regularly all the updates including new kernels, etc. Here are the symptoms: After pressing "shutdown" (or issuing a command in terminal) it happens (always) that the screen is still working at the end of shutdown process (ubuntu progress bar is at minimum and it stays visible). Also, CPU fan is still working. However, power and HDD lights go off.

The only possible way to shutdown computer at that moment is holding power button for 5 seconds. However, restart works OK. Now, I am sure that shutdown worked earlier fine, but unfortunately I cannot remember when the problems started: either when I installed 8.04 or after installing some of the kernel updates. Configuration: Asus 5pgl-mx motherboard, 1.5 GB ram, nvidia graphic card (sorry, not sure what model), etc.

Ubuntu :: PC Reboots By Itself When Shut It Down ?

Dec 2, 2009

I'm having an issue with a PC ( Gateway GT5220 ), with Ubuntu 64 bit 8.04 installed. There was Vista originally installed in it.

Now, every time I execute shutdown from GUI or command line, the PC reboots and never shuts down on its own, I have to keep pressed the power button for a few secs to power it off. It's very irritating and I don't know wether it's a Ubuntu or a BIOS issue.
