Hardware :: Cd Burners Interrupting With Booting?

Jan 18, 2010

I have two new CD burners that just blink the power lights occasionally, and this completely hangs my Scientific Linux 5.4 booting.

When I try with another CD burner with DVD combo, this one has never shown such mischievous behavior.

I am beginning to think of possible faulty hardware on the CD burners, but how can I be sure?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Want Recommendations For External DVD Burners?

Mar 24, 2010

I'm tired of burning coasters in both Linux and Windblows. The builtin DVD burner in this Dell Studio 1745 laptop (HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GA11N) won't even burn properly in windblows What external (USB) burners are forum members using?

I've looked at many on the web and eliminated most due to bad specs and reviews but did find three promising ones.

1: Digistore DIG-71042
2: Iomega 34427
3: Lenovo 41N5565

Any comments on those either good or bad? Or suggestions of what you use and how it works in linux?

Hardware :: Models And Makes Of Good Internal SATA Or IDE DVD-CD Burners?

Nov 10, 2010

I wonder what are models and makes of good internal SATA or IDE DVD-CD burners. I'd like to get one for my desktop tower since I've only had CD burners before. For burning, I use k3b and I'd be doing more CD burning than DVD burning but would also use the burner to watch a DVD movie now and then.

I'd prefer one that isn't too fussy about media. In other words, I'd be happy to have one that takes and plays nicely with commonly found media, rather than with exotic, hard-to-find media. And a burner that handles a good range of the various DVD formats would be nice too.

I don't need LightScribe because I figure it will only work for Windows users. Yes or No? [But does Linux have some package that lets this LightScribing work?]

[My OS is MEPIS 8.5, a Debian-based OS which uses Synaptic for package downloading and installation.] Tell me what good luck you've had with burner and tell what makes/models to avoid.

Ubuntu :: Booting After Installation (Dual Booting With Vista) - Error: No Such Devide Found

Jun 24, 2010

i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup, when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because, again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.

Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then, instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing, once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup, then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process, once i finished i continued to the next part, the installation, but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data, after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.

When it tried to boot, appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line, since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]

Red Hat :: Booting From USB HD Using Grub 0.97?

Apr 13, 2011

I have a working server running CentOS 5.5 (similar to RedHat EL) with the 2.6.18-194.el5 kernel. The hardware is a few years old, but we were able to accomplish this following goal using CentOS 4.4. What I'm trying to do is to back the system up to an external USB hard drive such that it can be booted from for recovery or to then take that drive and restore its contents to a second server with identical hardware. We have been successful implementing this on other server pairs, but I'm having a great deal of trouble getting this to work on this hardware and OS. I'm not using LVM or dual-booting with another OS. The USB drive is set up with identical partitions to the RAID set, and all the files have been successfully copied over, but I can't get the system to boot from it. Below is what I get when trying to boot from the USB drive:

Code:
Booting 'CentOS (2.6.18-194.el5)'
root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 ro root=LABEL=/

Debian :: Booting From Internal Mmc

Sep 29, 2015

I need to get Debian 8 running on my laptop. It is a Toshiba Satellite C40-C which seems to be a fairly new model. It is also a budget type, like a glorified netbook, but has come with Windows 10.

I have installed various versions of linux before on laptops and desktops no problem using a CD or DVD but this machine has no optical drive so I have been trying to use a usb stick. The bios is 32-bit uefi and the cpu is a dual core 64 bit Celeron. It has 2 gb ram and a 32 gb sd/mmc card built in instead of a hard disk. Windows 10 is installed with a recovery partition.

Progress so far:
I have resized the windows partition to give around 10gb available for Debian install.
I have downloaded the first DVD image and created a bootable 16gb usb stick with it with one of the recommended windows apps (not unetbootin) and this stick seems to work fine.
I have disabled Secure Boot in the bios. There is no option to change the 32 bit uefi to either 64 bit or to a legacy setup.
I have ran the Debian 8 install which seems to have worked. 2 partitions were created 8gb for the root filesystem ext4 and 2gb for swap.

The problem I have is after the install is finished and I remove the usb stick then reboot it just boots into Windows 10, there is no sign of Grub giving options of Debian or Windows. I believe that this problem is caused by the fact the SD/MMC card is used in place of a proper hard disk but I don't know how to fix this.

I have searched and read numerous articles but they either assume I can run a live cd (which I can't because of the 32 bit uefi bios) or have another linux machine, which I don't. I have a 32 bit Macbook with Snow Leopard on which I also plan to migrate to Debian so both will be the same, but will take a look at that after first resolving the problems with the Toshiba.

Ultimately I want to get rid of Windows 10 and just have Debian but want to make sure I can get everything working first. The Broadcomm ethernet adapter does not have a driver found during the install so there may be some other bits of hardware to sort out as well.

Fedora :: Pre-F10 Booting Screen?

Aug 18, 2009

I went directly from F9 to F11, and so "Plymouth" came as a very unpleasant surprise. I read the thread,

[URL]

about getting the graphical animation, but it didn't address the root problem. Whether you see the animation, the bubble in the middle of the screen filling up with white, or the three-color bar at the bottom of the page, Plymouth seems to be completely useless.

I tried an experiment. I disconnected the eth0 cable and rebooted. Absolutely nothing appeared on the screen to show that there was a problem, much less what it was. With the old system, the progress bar would be immediately replaced with the "details" to show that eth0 "failed" to be started. If one wanted, which I often did, one could manually switch to see the "details" (all the processes and demons started) throughout the whole boot.

I just can't understand removing such an important feature of the boot process. Where do people get ideas like this? Being able to get into the real goings-on of an OS has always been the hallmark of UNIX/Linux systems. I hope I'm wrong, but it seems the new Fedora philosophy is more and more like Microsoft's.

But here's my question: Is there any way I can restore the way the boot screen worked under F9?

Fedora :: Booting Xen Hypervisor On 15?

May 24, 2011

I just installed Fedora 15 x86-64 gold today so I could try out the Xen hypervisor. I installed xen by typing in xen command line and following the installation prompts. Everything seemed to go fine on the install. The following appeared in /boot:

[Code]....

However, when I rebooted there were no boot options. I saw than /boot/grub/grub.conf had no entries for a xen kernel so I modified grub.conf to show a boot menu and added a thrid kernel boot option (xen 4.1.0). I'm unsure if the lines I added are proper. Now when I reboot choosing third option (xen 4.1.0) I get a boot error message that "Error 19: Linux kernel must be loaded before initrd". I'm guessing that the issue is that xen-4.1.0.gz isn't becoming the kernel. At this point I'm stuck. I'm not sure if this is a xen on 15 issue or I'm just making some newbie mistake in grub.conf. Anyone see an issue or can confirm/not -confirm that xen works on 15 x86-64 gold?

[Code]....
