Want to boot from ISO on usb with grub. Both the netinst and hd-media netinst initrds have no findiso/iso-scan/fromiso option that allows me to locate the iso file in question. Is there a boot parameter that does it? Do I need to download a new initrd version? Is there any debian build AT ALL that allows mounting iso from usb?
View 7 RepliesI have a PC104 running debian. I have 3 hard drives (in addition to the one booting) mounted in fstab by UUID. I use the options defaults,error=remount-ro. However, this means that when I boot with the hard drives not attached, I have to press Ctrl-D to bypass when the boot discovers the drives are missing. Is there a timeout commandoption I can add to fstab so that it automatically continues booting even if the hard drives are not attached? I could not find anything on a timeout command. (I tried adding timeout=1000 but no-random guess)
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy system is a three days old Linux version 2.6.32-5-amd64 (Debian 2.6.32-35) with an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 60 @ 2.80GHz. It does start, goes through the grub and then spits out strange messages and just freezes before the KDE can be started. I have to restart again, until it really boots everything. This is happening in a random pattern.
I activated bootlog, but as far as I can see, the log only tracks, if the system is really booting. So I also have the dmesg copied into pastebin. These are the only two logs I know, now.

I use the SMXI script to install my graphics drivers (nvidia). It hasn't been booting to desktop for a while though. If I just run a

I've also tried doing a Xorg -configure to no success. I've also reinstalled the driver many times.
I wanted to be able to have a boot option to just use a command line with no X running at all. What I did was remove the gdm3 link in rc5.d . Then in /boot/grub/grug.cfg I made a new menuentry that is exactly the same as the default but I changed this line:

This worked. It gave me a command line interface with no X running.
My question is is this the recommended way in Debian? If not what is?
I have been using Linux for a very long time but I used mostly Slackware. I tried Redhat for awhile but really hated bluecruve, shows how long I have been using Linux. I have played with other distros but I always went back to Slack. But I really dislike KDE4 so Slack is no longer an option. KDE4 reminds me of a 12 year old girl that got a big box of makeup and had to use every bit of it. I now am using Debian on my laptop. And as aside I gave my 16 year old daughter a laptop for her birthday. She used the included version of windows 7 for awhile but then asked me what would be a good Linux distro for her. I showed her distrowatch and told her to look at the top distros. She then asked me to help her put on Debian. She loves it. She is a very good musician and song righter, She actually gets paid for doing that at 16, and really likes the programs in Linux to work with sound files. She also does MIDI stuff with our Yamaha Clavinova.
Now we are trying to do things the Debian way and it is a little different then other distros. So did I do the command line thing they way it's recommended in Debian. I have looked on line but all I could find was working in a shell and that is not what I was looking for.
I recently installed another Linux distro, Kali Linux, alongside my Debian 8 and discovered to my chagrin that my computer boots to Kali's grub rather than to the Debian grub. I had spent some time customizing Debian's grub and would hate to see that effort go to waste. Is there a way I can get my computer to boot to Debian's grub instead? I tried deleting Kali's boot partition with gparted but that did not seem to do anything.

Also get a mail when someone is wrong with the RAID while my computer is running. How I can reach this target I don't care especially. It just has to be a Debian package and stable
OK, to the story: I made a while ago an dist-upgrade from wheezy to jessie. Before, everything works fine. I boot my computer, the RAID gets checked and a mail was sent to my email-address with the state of my RAID and the disks of it. For this I followed a HowTo from [URL] .... After the upgrade, I dont get a mail anymore.

Everything works. I get the mails like I need it. In my opinion it's not a problem of the mail configuration. It seems, there is no network when the RAID get's started and the mails want to be send.
What I'm wondering is also, that obviously the
/etc/default/mdadm
is ignored by systemd and only the
/lib/systemd/system/mdmonitor.service is executed. But while booting the RAID get's startet with /etc/init.d/mdadm-raid and this should read the /etc/default/mdadm. Right? Confusing!
Anyway, is there a way, how I can easy change the order (without any side-effects) of the startup for the network and the RAID. I can't figure out, which unit I have to change, that it will work. Or maybe is there another solution? Like I mentioned, it's just have to work with Debian stable packages

Since moving my debian server over to a Gigabyte H97N-WIFI motherboard the console dims on booting and generally stays dark. Strangely the screen the brightens up if I go to an emergency shell, but if the boot runs successfully I don't see the resulting login prompts. Also, during the boot process the messages to the console are too dark to see.
I've tried the i915.invert_brightness=1 fix mentioned here [URL].... but that seems to have no effect. I'm assuming that this has something to do with moving to intel graphics as my previous hardware had a radeon graphics card and didn't display this problem.

I had originally set it up so I could login and manage our internal sites, but I have the need to allow a few clients in to access their sites that we host. I am trying to root the users in their site directory, which would be "/sites/www.whatever.com/".
It just hit me while typing this. Is it possible to create a user without a shell to prevent login via SSH and set the home folder to /sites/whatever instead of /home/username? That would allow me to continue operating with my current configuration and root them in their site while preventing SSH logins.

So I correctly see the two luns, but multipath doesn't create the relative devices. Under /dev/mapper I see: control mpath0 mpath0-part1 mpath0-part1 is the first lun, the one I mounted in a directory under filesystem. I can't find the device for the second lun
I am *finally* getting around to rebuilding my file-sharing computer. I'll be sharing files with both Linux and Windoze machines. It's a home network, so there's nothing fancy needed. I know I have to tweak my smb.conf file until I'm satisfied with the features and security. I'm using SWAT and I'm starting with a bare-bones conf file. It's not secure but I can see the server and selected files/directories from my other Linux box.
My really dumb question is, do I have to reboot both the server and the client machines every time I change the SAMBA configuration? I thought I just had to stop and restart the SAMBA service in the SWAT software - but then the server disappears from my client. It looks like I need to reboot both machines for the client to see the server.

I am using Squessze and Gnome. When I try to use the gui System>Administration>Network or Users and Groups I get the error The configuration could not be loaded. You are not allowed to access the system configuration.Everything was working before. I read around a bit. In some cases,it was caused by mismatching group and password files after using the gui. I do not know how to check if they are matching. Of course I do not know for sure that is the problem in my case.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI had (and still do) a working dual-boot XP/Karmic (GRUB version 1.97 beta4). I shrank the Ubuntu partition and set up partitions and installed Debian 5.04. When I got to the point of installing GRUB, I told Debian to install grub to MBR. On rebooting, Ubuntu was not an option on the NEW (looked different) grub menu.Maybe it was GRUB2? Could boot to either XP or Debian though.
Thought easiest thing was to reinstall Ubuntu since it seems to "see" other OS's more reliably. So I did, and installed GRUB again during its install to MBR. Then, all three were in the GRUB menu (version 1.97 beta4 again), but when tried booting to Debian, got an error (forget the wording), but think it was because the partitions got renumbered when installing Ubuntu.
SO, reinstalled Debian, reformatting the partitions but not deleting them first so the numbering stayed the same. When got to the part for installing GRUB, I told it to skip (I got some kind of error that said "Install failed. This is a fatal error. You will have to boot with an external device..."), hoping now the current GRUB would work.
Now, all three were on the GRUB menu, but when I tried to boot Debian, I got "no such device" and a list of numbers/letters after it. And "press any key to continue", which takes you back to the GRUB menu (version 1.97 beta4, by the way).
O.K., did sudo update-grub in ubuntu and rebooted. Now, Debian 5.04 shows as last entry in GRUB, and choosing it starts a boot, which hangs at "Begin: Waiting for root file system....".
Waiting long enough at the "Waiting for root file system..." hang results in a series of notifications:
WARNING bootdevice may be renamed. Try root=dev/hda3
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
-Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
-Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
-Check root= (did the sytem wait for the right device?)
-Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/sda3 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
In Gparted, the partition with Debian root is hdc3, although on the GRUB menu it's listed as /dev/sda3. However, in Gparted the Windows partition is hdc1 and on GRUB it's /dev/sda1, and it boots fine.....
Is my Debian install just borked? Did telling it to skip installing a bootloader (I got some kind of error that said "Install failed. This is a fatal error. You will have to boot with an external device..." ruin it?
If skipping the bootloader install did ruin it, how do you install Debian without borking your current GRUB? That's what happened the first time.
I use apache2 with virtual host and I 've a solution of Webftp who run on it. This solution send automatically email when a new client register himself. View 1 Replies View RelatedI am working on a Debian 2.6.26-19 Distribution with exim4 as MTA. After a system restart a problem occurred with delivering emails to local addresses. These local addresses use a 1and1 mailserver for email. The MX records for the local domain are set correctly but exim does not use a DNS lookup for these addresses because it identifies them as local addresses. I figured this out by executing the exim4 -d -bt command. The dns lookup part of the result looks like this (I replaced the actual address with placeholders):

The eventual result of the exim4 -d -bt command is: [user]@[domain.ext] is undeliverable: Unrouteable address How can I make sure, that exim4 makes a DNS lookup for the local addresses instead of skipping it? I know that I have to edit a exim4 configuration file, but I could not figure out which and how.
I have a set of vm's with stable, testing, and sid to keep track of how things are going. When I did an apt-get dist-upgrade with squeeze last week, things seemed to OK (350 package updates) until the end. It didn't seem to like and / or was confused by a kernel dependency.
I am not too concerned yet. Because these are in vm's, I do a snapshot before any significant change. I can futz around with impunity because I have that backup.
I re-booted, and tried the apt-get dist-upgrade again with same results. I think I also tried apt-get -f install.
So I reverted to the snapshot, and will simply try again in the future. I recall that with lenny as testing, the font-desktop was really screwed up for about a period of 6 weeks.
However, just in case someone else runs into this:
1) a re-boot worked, but the failure of apt-get made me nervous enough to revert.
2) waiting for corrections has seemed to work in the past (with a single exception with a 4-disk SCSI software RAID10 update that failed to re-boot lenny successfully after what seemed to be a minor update -- that was on a real system, not a vm. I haven't gotten back to look at that.)

I have bunch of partitions on my Debian server installation, so I was experimenting with partitions and saw that is one partition fails fsck on booting time, system waits for root password or CTRL+D key combination. The problem is that my Debian machine is headless and I use only SSH to it. So if fsck fails, I can't to login to SSH (off course, because it is not loaded at this time). So I need to go with monitor and keyboard to machine and press CTRL+D.One option is to disable disk checking at startup by changing fstab file. I don't like this option. Is there any possibility to auto continue booting Debian machine ?

I have a web server running and wish to get a mail server running on the same machine. I have a registered domain name. I have postfix and dovecot installed. I can send emails from the server to my normal address on a different domain but cannot receive mail. I can send and receive mail locally with no problems. I just don't know where to look for the problems. If you need any more info ( config files/doamin names etc let me know)
