Slackware :: Activate Laptop Integrated Webcam Dell Inspiron 1525?
Oct 31, 2010I've been using slackware64 13.1 ever since it came out on my Dell Inspiron 1525, and I haven't really had any problems with my webcam in that time. However, last time I tried to use skype - I noticed that it couldn't detect it.
In kinfocenter, my webcam is picked up (OmniVision Technologies). The only time I've had a similar problem in the past is when I used the "Compact" option in lilo.conf, and the webcam wouldn't turn on. Just removing the option solved the problem.
Since I don't know what steps caused this to happen, I'm not sure where to start fixing it

It seems strange as i have skype working perfectly on my system, and can use the video option in it without any problem, so it cant be that my webcam isnt recognized. does anyone know how i can get my webcam working in either or both of these instant messengering services.

Mar 28, 2010I've got my Lenovo T60 laptop wireless running without too much trouble, the only problem is when i close my laptop lid and open it again the wirelessconnection is down and i simply cant click on the network icon in the notification area to re-connect as wlan0 is inactive. If i go to System>admin>network i cant activate the interface either as the 'active' button is greyed out, the only way to get the thing to come alive again (other than a full reboot) is to toggle the wireless switch on my laptop off and then back on.Not sure this should be required, i've got the interface configured to start automatically but it doesnt seem to care.

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Laptop Webcam To Work / Resolve This?
Jul 28, 2010I've been trying to get my built-in webcam to work for the past few hours and am completely stuck... Apparently I need a driver called uvcvideo, but I cant find it anywhere (its repos have been removed). I have installed Cheese and Camorama, neither of which work. Camorama throws this error when launched - "Could not connect to video device /dev/video0). Please check connection. Cheese launches, turns camera light on, shows a black screen for ~1 sec then closes.
The only way I can get the webcam to work is with a program called "guvcview" (light turns on and I can see preview), that's why I'm thinking I need the uvcvideo driver.
I've found various posts on how to install the uvcvideo driver, but I get an error on all its reposotory links - "reposotory not found". I also can't figure out how to install the EasyCam program, yet another repository error.
Does anyone know how to get built-in webcams working? I suspect it is due to my lack of driver, but I could be wrong. Lsusb detects the webcam as a Chicony Electronics Co. LTD Gateway USB 2.0 Webcam, so the kernel detects it, just no apps.

Mar 20, 2011I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on both my laptop and desktop. I've gotten a Gigaware Webcam with Mic (Radio Shack) 25-157 camera to work out of the box on my Del E-1505, no problems. Even interfaces with Skype correctly.
On my desktop, though, the camera light comes on, the camera is recognized through lsusb:

Apr 15, 2011I have installed Ubuntu (both 10.10 and 11.04 pre-release) on my laptop but my battery is not recognized and it is detected as a desktop system rather than a laptop. I have tried the cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state method but the directory doesn't exist. I have tried another guide to paste the battery info into this directory but it doesn't allow me to do that and says that the directory doesn't exist, even though I'm trying to make it. I tried it in root nautilus and even on an install of Lubuntu (with a root file manager) but it still failed to budge. I really don't know what to do as I have tried all the guides on the internet that I could find.

May 15, 2010When I change the "When laptop lid is closed" option in Gnome Power Manager to either "Blank Screen" or "Do Nothing" (by manually using gconf-editor), the screen itself doesn't turn off when the lid is closed. Obviously not a huge deal, as I could just change the "idle before sleep" on certain occasions, but I liked that setting it to "Do Nothing" previously would actually turn off the screen when the lid was closed.

Without connection to my router, YUM can't be used; my windows 7 laptop does neither command line ssh or git in order to reach the fedora repository and of course Firefox can't (yet) do http access. Short of ordering the entire distro on DVDs, is there any way to activate my DSL link? (I have the entire 3.3 Gb .iso file and have been unsuccessful in creating a bootable DVD in Windows land.)
