Hardware :: Setup Unable To Access Disk

Feb 8, 2009

It all started when I decided to take the plunge and install Linux, bearing in mind that I am still completely dependent on Windows. I decided to go for Ubuntu, hearing that it is user-friendly and easy to learn. My current machine dual boots to WinXP & Vista. Following the guide regarding pre-partitioning, I decided to delete a partition I no longer use so I can install Ubuntu on there. Using XP's disk management, I deleted said partition, but it somehow also deleted my Vista partition! As a result, I am now unable to boot to Vista. I went back to XP, and ran Partition Magic to fix the partition tables. However, I get an error saying something about the partition's drive letter can't be identified. Decided to resinstall Vista but when it asked me where to install, I noticed that it only shows 3 partitions instead of 4 (my data partition has somehow vanished as well). Then I heard a noise from my HDD, and it suddenly reboots. Decided to log back to XP, but I am unable to boot to XP as well (got BSOD'ed).

Got my XP setup disk to reinstall, but this time, XP setup only recognizes one big partition(250gb).... and below the partition there is a note that says "Setup unable to access disk." I also tried the recovery console, and on the C: prompt when I did the chkdisk, it says something about invalid file path or can't find the path. Tried the Vista install again, it was also unable to access the disk. So what happened? Is my HDD dead? Finally, I thought I'd give Ubuntu a try. Decided to do the "Live CD" first, and wow, nice user interface! Then suddenly, I saw my "data" drive and "winxp" drive! Everything is accessible and all my files were there. I was overjoyed knowing that it didn't wipe out any of my files. So I guess my main question is, should I go ahead and install Ubuntu and will I be able to get those files back? Is there a program similar to XP's disk management? And finally, I know not related to Linux, but how can I boot back to XP?

Thing is now, I can't access my external hard drive or any usb thumb drives I plug in. General :: Migrated From Ext3-disk To A Ext4 Disk - Warning: Unable To Open An Initial Console

Feb 4, 2010

OS: Debian unstable 32bit, kernel 2.6.32-2, grub 1.98 from late january 2010 (only have working net-access from work now, so I am grabbing information from memory). EXT3 and EXT4 support is compiled into the kernel along with chipset/scsi/sata support (not as modules), and I have tested to boot ext3 with it before proceeding. Prereq: my old disk started to have too much S.M.A.R.T errors, so I bought another one, put in a USB cabinet, added swap and ext4 partition/filesystem to it, and copied over all data from the old system to the new that was mounted at /dest using the command "find ./ -xdev -print0 | cpio -paV0 /dest". Swiched disks, so I now have the ext4 disk sitting at /dev/sda (partitions: sda1 => ext4, sda2 => swap), and booted into rescue-mode from cdrom, using /dev/sda1 as root with a shell on. After doing this, I performed the following commands:

mount --bind /dev /dest/dev
chroot /dest

modified the /etc/default/grub to instruct the kernel to boot using ext4, ran grub-install --recheck /dev/sda
ran update-grub to modify /boot/grub/grub.cfg (which looks as it should) After doing this, grub finds my partition and mounts it. It however stalls with the message: "warning: unable to open an initial console" and does nothing after this point. I have no ramdisk, but my old kernel booted fine from ext3 (and still does if I copy it to a ext3 partition), and since the ext4 support is compiled into the kernel - should I really need a ramdisk?

Ubuntu Networking :: The Phone Can Access The Internet Through The Computer Unable To Get Access To Https Sites, Like Webmails

Dec 31, 2010

I managed to configure my W890i phone to get access to internet through an ubuntu-based computer. It's very easy to use the phone to give internet access to the computer, but the opposite is quite more tricky. For that I've done the following

----On the phone---

-Set the USB network option to "through computer", so that the phone uses the computer's internet connection and not the opposite.

-Decide and set "Shared Network" parameters: user, pasword and workgroup.

-In "conectivity-> internet connection" set "allow local network" to "yes"

----On Ubuntu 10.04---

-Install samba, samba-client, smbfs, smbclient, firestarter and dhcp3-server

-Configure Samba (System-> Administration-> Shared folders): same workgroup as in the phone, add new user (the phone), passwd this new user. In my case the user was called "w890i" and the password given was the same.

-Once the phone is connected to the computer through USB (then select "phone mode"), a new connection appears in NetworkManager: usb0.The aim is to create a shared network that gives internet access to this device. Edit the IPv4 parameters of this new connection, set them to Manual and give an IP adress (192.168.0.1) and a subnet mask (255.255.255.0); the rest of the fields are left empty.Connect this network.

-Set firestarter to use dhcp3: sudo ln -sf /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server /etc/init.d/dhcpd

-Launch firestarter and follow the wizard. Set "allow internet shared connection", choose the device for the primary internet access, and then the device for the shared network (usb0). Then change the settings for firestarter: activate DHCP for local network, set IP to the one we gave before (192.168.0.1).

-Open dhcp3-server config file sudo gedit /etc/default/dhcp3-server And set INTERFACES="usb0"

-Set the policies of firestarter: in incoming connections, allow connections from the IP adress given to the phone (192.168.0.1). Then add rules for the ports that need to be open for this connection. I opened HTTP, HTTPS, SMB, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IMAPS, DHCP for all the connections in the local network.

-Apply policies and start the firewall.

------------

After all this, the phone can access the internet through the computer. Two problems appeared:

1. I couldn't get access to https sites, like webmails. The phone gave a "communication error". But then I tried with Opera instead of the browser built in the phone's firmware, and I could finally get to https sites.

2. I couldn't retrieve mail, neither POP nor IMAP nor IMAPS. I thought it was a firmware problem again, and I tried out several mobile phone email clients written in java, but none of them worked.

So this is at the moment the problem. If I connect from the phone to the internet directly through 3G, the email clients work for all my accounts. I don't think it's a firewall problem, because the ports are opened for this connection

Debian :: Disk Setup - Df And Fdisk Reports Different

Dec 9, 2010

Iīm pretty new to linux and debian and I have a problem with my disk setup. I have a rocketRAID hardware card installed for RAID setup. In addition I have a separate HDD for linux and use the RAID-setup for server purposes. Now, when I boot the system, grub boots /dev/sda1. This does not work and I have to change to /dev/sdb1 for it to find the system files. (although sometimes it works, but in these cases the system does not find the RAID-disks. Thatīs for another time thou).

The strange thing about this, to me in any case, is that "fdisk" reports correctly, with sda and sdb but "df" reports all disks as sda and none as sdb. It also misses a partition of the RAID-disks which fdisk reports. hereīs a screengrab from "fdisk -l" and "df -h"

General :: Setup RAID 5 And One Spare Disk

Aug 4, 2010

I want to build a 6xSATA RAID 5 system with on of the disks as spare disk. I think this give me a chance of 2 of 6 disks failing without losing data. I am right?
Hardware: Intel ICH10R
First I will creat a 3xSATA RAID 5, after I will add the spare disk and after that I will add the others disks. This is what I think I should do.

Step 1:
Create RAID Device
Code:
mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --metadata 1.2 --level=5 --raid-devices=3 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1
I read that "--metadata 1.2" is the best option. It is true?
Create filesystem on the RAID device

Using this method of calculation:
* chunk size = 128kB (for RAID 5)
* block size = 4kB (recommended for large files, and most of time)
* stride = chunk / block = 128kB / 4k = 32kB
* stripe-width = stride * ( (n disks in raid5) - 1 ) = 32kB * ( (5)- 1 ) = 32kB * 4 = 128kb
Then:
Code:
mkfs.ext3 -v -m .1 -b 4096 -E stride=32,stripe-width=128 /dev/md0

Step 2:
Add spare-disk
Code:
mdadm --add /dev/md0 /dev/sdd1
Is this enough?

Step 3:
Adding disks:
Code:
mdadm --add /dev/md0 /dev/sde1
mdadm --grow /dev/md0 --raid-devices=4
fsck.ext3 /dev/md0
resize2fs /dev/md0

Ubuntu Installation :: No HD Recognized To Partition In Disk Setup

Apr 23, 2011

When trying to install Kubuntu 10.04 32-bit (or Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit) it does not show me any hard drive to partition in the 'Disk Setup' (I've clicked all the buttons on that screen to see if I can encourage it!) and will not let me past that point in the installation process (because, obviously, no root file system has been defined). I have done something very bad to my computer. As an aid to selling my computer, I decided to (try to) install Windows 7. I booted into a live Ubuntu CD and used Gparted to reformat my hard drive. After several issues with the Windows boot CD I decided to pull up FastBuild Utility, and did something which included deleting LD and Defining LD again. Didn't make any difference with the Win 7 install. I am now trying to return my computer to a functional state in the sanctuary of Kubuntu 10.04.

Tried installing Win XP which I have installed successfully on another computer. Got an error message: "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer" - presumed that was because of something I did with FastBuild Utility (2006). I've tried as many different options in this as I think could make a difference. Booted into DR-DOS and deleted partitions and created a FAT 32 partition. Booting into the live Ubuntu 10.04 CD again and used GParted to create an NTFS Primary Partition taking up all the hard drive. As above and deleting all partitions in GParted. Checking into BIOS and changing the SATA Operation from 'RAID On' to 'RAID Autodetect / ATA' (Now changed back again to the default 'RAID On.').

Loaded Defaults in BIOS - I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 x64 on it since it came out with these settings. At all points I have tried to install Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit, Kubuntu 10.04 32 bit (and Win XP) with no success. In the Kubuntu install, when I get to the Disk Setup part of the installation process it offers me no information whatsoever. My hard drive has all partitions deleted because of my last action in GParted. May need to define a partition. What as? I'm still convinced that my playing in FastBuild Utility (2006) is probably the root cause of this, and so quite likely to be a good place to go to solve this. I think I've set everything as it was, but can't be 100% on that.

My Computer:
Dell Inspiron 1721, AMD Turion x64 dual core, FUJITSU MHW2120BH 120GB HDD.

Server :: Unable To Setup A NIS Server Setup On CentOS System

Jan 19, 2010

We are trying to set up a NIS server on a CentOS system. We need to have a NIS server which can provide NIS authentication to a couple of clients. We are practically new to all this stuff.

Just googled to find some ideas about installing ypserv and ypbind and portmapper. We did all that and also started them successfully. But now the clients are not able to join to the NIS domain . The error log states "YP_DOMAIN NOT BOUND".

I guess we have not entered the /etc/yp.conf, /etc/hosts files properly. Please let us know the detailed steps to setup a NIS server .

Also, please let us know what entries should go into the different /etc/<file_names>? What is meant by HOSTNAME in the /etc/hosts file?

Is there any other files which need to be changed? Are we missing any steps?

Also to add-on, while executing the ypinit command we faced the following error:

At this point, we have to construct a list of the hosts which will run NIS servers. localhost.localdomain is in the list of NIS server hosts. Please cont inue to add the names for the other hosts, one per line. When you are done with the list, type a <control D>. next host to add: localhost.localdomain next host to add:

The current list of NIS servers looks like this:

Is this correct? [y/n: y] y

Fedora Servers :: RAID 6-like Setup With Dissimilar Disk Sizes?

Jun 7, 2010

I'm looking to set up a bit of a home server, and am wondering about storage. What I'd like is something like RAID 6, which has good redundancy built-in, but with this being a home server, I'd prefer to start a little smaller and leave room to build it up in future. I'd been looking at commercial products like the 'drobo', which seems fairly ideal, but I'd really like to see if I can do it myself. I understand that throwing the RAID into an LVM will allow for some expansion, but the last time I checked, most RAID setups called for the same sized disks, or at least limited the array by the size of the smallest disk present.

What I'd like is the ability to build a basic framework with a few cheap disks, and then as things start filling up, to be able to add larger ones (perhaps eventually pulling out smaller ones as though they'd failed and replacing them with big ones)

Server :: Setup Permissions For SSH Access To Apache?

Feb 23, 2010

I am looking for the best way to set up permissions in the following situation. I have a web server set up on debian. I have different web sites in /var/www. Each web has a group of developers who each have system users and ssh access to the server. For example i have a web site in /var/www/example.com and a group of developers in group exampledev. I need all the users in exampledev plus the apache user (www-data) to have read write and execute permissions on all the content of the web site. I can give the group exampledev these permissions without a problem. The problem is that when they modify or create new files (they either connect via ssh o sftp which is the same right?) they are created with their user and group rather than exampledev. Am i going down the wrong path? This must be a common situation but i haven't found the solution.
