Hardware :: SD Card Change To Read Only Status

Oct 7, 2010

With a Netbook that runs Kubuntu 10.04 i have always stored by regular files on a SD card. For ease I have used symbolic links to save and retrive data from the card such as a Documents folder. After a power crash my SD card which has always been read/write has changed to read only. The links do not work and if I try to make a new link "Read-only file system" is the error.

I have tried chmod with the same error message. Device is owned by me not root. Saving to the device also returns the same error message.

I have looked at a couple of similar streams but neither has any final resolution.

changing the SD card back to read/write?

Ubuntu :: Search Folders In Evolution : Status Is Not Read

Jan 6, 2010

I wanted to create something that is pretty standard in the computer world: a search folder that shows me all the unread email in both local and remote (IMAP: Ubuntu/Postfix/Dovecot) folders.

1. Create Search Folder

2. Edit properties to find: "Status is not Read"

Viewing the folder was a bit of a nightmare.

If I clicked on any email that was unread, the email would appear for a moment, it's status would then change to 'read', it would then vanish, the next unread email would come up and then vanish. All unread email would then be flipped through until there was none in the search folder.I now have to go through all of my folders to make sure I haven't missed any important emails. Is there a way to create a rational search folder for unread mail given this setup?

Ubuntu :: Format A SDHC Card To Read As A SD Card?

Dec 17, 2010

I am wondering if it would be possible to format an 8g SDHC card in a way that it will be able to be written to and read by an SD reader?

Reading about SDHC vs SD suggests that the only difference is the block/cluster/byte configurations. Is that true?

Could I format the 8g FAT32 SDHC with gparted to a 1g FAT16 partition with the rest of the space left un-formatted so an SD reader could handle it?

Ubuntu :: Pidgin Disconnects On Status Change?

Feb 20, 2010

I'm currently using Pidgin 2.6.2 on Karmic. Status changes work fine if I change it in Pidgin, but if I use the user switching applet to change my status is consistently disconnects my connection to Windows Live (but not AIM or GTalk), claiming that I have "signed on from another location". A quick Google and forums search turned up nothing.

How is it possible to change the LCD status screen on the front of the server?

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Change Status On Repositories?

Apr 22, 2011

After I upgraded from KDE 4.5 to KDE 4.6 I ran into a problem with changing the the status of different repoes from enabled to disabled, and vice versa. As I only did a desktop upgrade it is perhaps just a coincidence and hence the problem may be related to something different. But in any case, if I tick or untick the 'enable' or 'disable' option within the Yast module Software Repositories for the repo I wish to activate or deactivate, nothing happens. Deleting and readding the repoes has no effect, neither has rebuilding the rpm db or zypper refresh. I'm not very familiar with the command-line for these operations so I am grateful if anyone could give me a hint on what to try next.

Ubuntu :: Empathy Doesn't Change Gmail Status?

May 5, 2010

The default chat client in Ubuntu 10.04, Empathy, doesn't seem to have any affect in what my actual gmail status displays - I can change the status to be available, busy, or away, and change the custom message to be absolutely anything, but when I log into my Gmail account the status isn't changed whatsoever like it would have it I was using Google Talk in Windows. Also, in the notifications area in the top right, the "Me Menu's" available and busy icons don't have any affect either. If I click the available, busy, or away icon in Empathy or the Me Menu, the respective other will change to be the same, so something's happening, but not on my Gmail account.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Read SD Card

Sep 24, 2010

So basically I have an SD Card that I use with primarily with my Wii. This morning I decided to install the HomeBrew Channel on my Wii (I don't think it matters if you know what this is). While trying to run an application my Wii froze, and since then my SD Card has been unreadable, my Wii however is fine.

I assumed I could just pop this card into a computer and format it. There is nothing on the card I need to recover. When I stuck the card into my room mate's computer running Windows (she's the only one who has a SD card slot) Windows Explorer freezes, and remains frozen until I remove the card. I tried using the Disk Management to format the card, but it also freezes upon inserting it.

The only idea I could come up with is booting to my Ubuntu disc on my room mates computer, in the mode that lets me run Ubuntu right off the CD-ROM, and try to format it here. When I insert the card an item called 'SD/MMC Drive' appears but there's no option to format when I right click on it.

Now my linux is a bit rusty, but I thought I could do it by typing "sudo mkdosfs -F 32 -v /dev/sda1". The status seems to indicate it was successful, but the issue still persists.

Ubuntu :: Twitter Status / Update Pidgin Status In Lucid

Jul 5, 2010

I have just upgraded to Lucid on Ubuntu. I am a long time Pidgin user. I tried using Empathy with Gwibber, but I can't get Gwibber to update my IM status(es) in Empathy, so I want to go back to using Pidgin. (Additionally, I can't get Skype to work with Empathy.)I installed pidgin-microblog and pidgin-mbpurple, and they allow me to view my Twitter feed in Pidgin and update my Twitter status in Pidgin. However, in Karmic, I was also able to specify certain "status availabilities" (one named "Twitter-Available" and one named "Twitter-Away", for instance) to have the IM status message for these statuses become populated with my Twitter feed. This capability seems missing in pidgin-mbpurple in Lucid (and it seems to be the only thing missing from Karmic).

Is there a way to have pidgin-mbpurple update certain "status availabilities" in Lucid (and I'm just missing something) or is this no longer possible?Equivalently, is it possible to have Gwibber update my status message in Empathy? (I just want to be able to update my status once on one of my three computers - and have it propagate to all my other accounts (IM and social networking) and computers).

Hardware :: Format A SD Card That's Recognized As A Read-only File?

Feb 25, 2011

I've got some trouble trying to format a SD card. I tried to format it in the GUI and the terminal, but couldn't make it. I couldn't even copy or move any file to the directory in the SD card, even logged as root.
It's a SD card from a digital camera. When I insert it in the camera, it says the card is blocked, so that it's not possible to take any picture.

I tried using "fdisk" to set a new fyle system in it, and tried "mkdosfs" trying to format it under the current file system.

Ubuntu :: HFS+ Is Read-only - How Do Change In Terminal

Mar 31, 2010

Basically i have a 1TB USB HDD that is formatted HFS+ (i used to use it attached to a hacked AppleTV, it has loads of media on it).

Appletv wasn't great, so now i have a lovely acer revo running XBMC Live, and it's blooming great. my problem is my USB drive mounts, but i think it's read-only, as i am struggling to sftp new files to it. so my question is:

How do i make the drive writeable?

I've read things about disabling journling, an fstab file, chown in terminal, but im really struggling.

In temrinal if i navigate to the /media folder and run ls -al, i get this: (note the usb drive is called AppleTV)

revo@XBMCLive:

How to make it read-write? i'm happy for it to have full write access by root, or all users or whatever. im sure its 1 line in terminal!

Ubuntu :: Change Permissions On Read-only Filesystems

Jun 22, 2010

Generally, I LOVE Ubuntu 10.04...best Ubuntu yet, IMO. But there's this one thing about it that really bugs me, and that is that all executable files on CD/DVD are set with very restricted permissions, including the 'Allow executing file as program' checkbox being left blank. Since CD/DVD's are read-only, I can't change these permissions the normal way or even just execute the files as root!

So far I've been able to get by with just copying the disk's contents to the hard drive and then running the program with altered permissions from there, but right now I want to install Unreal Tournament 2004 (the DVD version, if that makes any difference) and its Linux installer will not function properly from a local directory, so I'm stuck on this one.

Surely there's some way to alter the permissions for a read-only filesystem! Can't I just set system-wide permissions that would even apply to CD's and DVD's?

General :: Cannot Read / Write SD Card After Improper Format (sector Size 0) - Fix It?

So, I thought I would plug the camera in to the laptop with it set to host the card as media when plugged in as USB, in an attempt to fix the formatting issue.

However, when I plug it in to my linux machine, it does not register as a device (e.g., /dev/sda) due to some errors, therefore I cannot reformat it. Essentially, I think I need to fix the partition table but I'm not sure how to when it doesn't register as a device. code...
