View 2 Replies View RelatedI keep getting this error in my log viewer every 2 seconds: Code: ata4: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps I have a dual boot SSD and I have run many SMART tests in windows and linux, (using smartmon tools and the disk utility) and the reports are all 100% healthy..... My research shows that this error represents one of the following:
1. Problem with SATA controller
2. Changing BIOS to allow SATA
3. Changing SATA mode to PATA or AHCI
4. Replacing the SATA cable
5. Allowing the SSD to run at SATA II speeds, i.e. 3 Gbps
- Does anyone know how to try number 5, i.e. allowing the SSD to run at SATA II speeds? I am lost here and this problem has caused my machine to crash twice when watching a movie in linux/ ubuntu. (It is worth noting that the crashes have only occurred in linux and I have never had an issue in windows, so it does seem to be a linux setting somewhere, hence why I think it is a "allowing SATA II to run at correct speeds issue")
I purchased a new Sata Card today so I can install multiple harddrives on my system, but It appears as though I am missing the drivers for the card, because it is simply not recognizing it. how to obtain drivers for these cards and install them?
Edit - Just in case you were wondering, the Sata Card is Generic, and I have no idea who the manufacturer is. It literally says 'Sata Card' on the box and has no company information, but I did buy it at a reputable business, so I have no doubt that it should work fine. I've recently switched over to gnome desktop environment with gnome-shell preview as my compositing manager.Everything is good except for this process xfce4-notifyd which autostarts somehow..
The problem with this process is it acts as the default notification daemon over-riding gnome-shell's built-in notification support and tends to display balloon popups on the top right corner....If i kill this process everything is good.... But on restart it autostarts again somehow..I looked through the items in gnome-session-properties and also in these places:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a DL380 G3 HP server and I need to attach a 1TB hard drive. Of course the server only accepts SCSI and since I don't have a few thousand pounds to splash about I am looking at alternate methods. What I have done so far is buy a PCI SATA raid card and attach the 1TB drive to it. The BIOS seemed to be playing nice detecting it and allowing me to select the card. But it won�t see the drive.
Funnily enough though when I installed Linux on the SCSI drive during the install it saw the 1TB just fine and I could write to it. This has led me to believe that I could use GRUB (installed on the SCSI) to boot the 1TB as the hardware setup is working but the BIOS just can't handle it. So here I am with no real knowledge of GRUB. I was hoping someone could tell me where to begin with this and if it is even possible

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a mac G4 Gigabit Ethernet, with 400MHz processor. I was running the Hardy version of Ubuntu Server last year, although I was booting from the onboard ATA controller. I just added a 2-port Sonnet SATA card and a single 250G SATA drive, and removed all the ATA gear. I installed 10.04 Server, and via guided partitioning wiped the 250G SATA drive, and installed yaboot. When I try to boot from the 250G SATA it hangs up at the "Mac Smiley <-> ?" Icon after the second stage bootstrap prompt, and then cycles.
I looked at some other threads, in fact read this about 4 times and got some good hints: [URL]. I can boot with a live 10.04 desktop CD, and mount the linux partition and look at yaboot.conf:

I see the device in dmesg. On the macbook pro 6,1 it gets issued IRQ 19 and loads sata_sil24 and ata_piix correctly, however on the 5,1 and 5,2 macbook pro it only loads sata_sil24 and gets IRQ 24. Is there anyway to specify the IRQ assigned to the device via the kernel (is it an IRQ conflict or device not working on IRQ24)? MacBook Pro uses an EFI so not traditional bios where I can set irqs. Am I looking in the right direction as to the cause of my problem? Slackware 13.1 with standard linux kernel 2.6.35.8

The problem is that it I need to add more SATA ports. RAID is not a big deal to me so the card can be a simple add in card. I am limited to PCI because the board does not have any pci expres slots. I am also interested in what hard drives that card would work with. I am hoping to keep them to 500 Gigs min. The motherboard has two built in SATA prots but I don't use them have had bad luck with them in the past

I have a computer and I need to know whether its Sata-controller supports hotplugging. Therefore I (think I) need to know which Sata-controller is used in my computer. Can anyone tell me how I can find that piece of info?
ps. Some info on the environment: It is running an AMD Geode processor which only support IDE and therefore the board has a Pata to Sata converter build in. When I do 'lspci' it only shows the IDE connection:

View 1 Replies View RelatedSomehow Fedora 12 does not find one of my Sata drives (Seagate Barracuda 500GB) on the motherboard (Asus P5Q pro). The drive is attached to SATA_E1, which is a Silicon Image Serial ATA RAID connector. The drive currently has Windows Vista 64-bit OS which has been working fine. Fedora install loads correctly without errors, but only shows my RAID system on SATA ports 1-6.
WHAT I HAVE TRIED:
I have tried showing RAID as IDE in the BIOS, and setting it to compatible mode. Still does not detect.
I have tried setting the drives to ACPI mode in BIOS. No effect.
OTHER INFO:
I'm installing the x86_64 version of Fedora 12. I have run the Debian i686 installer and it picks up this volume without issue.
I went to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my home pc last night but I couldn't. The installers could not see my raid and even though I wished to install to a seperate HDD windows is installed to my raid. The windows MBR always overtook the Grub and whenever I start grub up it cannot find an OS or Kernel.
I have got an ASUS Rampage 3 Extreme [URL] and on it there are two 6.0 sata Marvell connectors: [URL]
In these two Marvell connectors are two WD velociraptor 10,00 rpm Raid 0 drives. On these two drives is installed Windows 7. The ubuntu installer cannot seem to see the raid pair and so does not install Grub correctly.
I have been trying to install Ubuntu on my main computer for some time. I think I have two problems: my hard drive and video card. I started with Ubuntu 9.04 but got nowhere. I am now trying Ubuntu 9.10 32 bit. I can at least use the live cd if I put the video on safe mode. Just in case you are wondering, I have tried other distros: Fedora, OpenSUSE, Slitaz, Wolvix, etc. Only Slitaz and Ubuntu 9.10 works on a live cd.

When I go to install it, I can get to the install menu but from there all I get is a blank screen. I have tried to put the video in safe mode then install it but I get the same result: a blank screen.
How do I know if Ubuntu recognize the Hard Drive and Video Card? I tried the mount command to see what it sees but I didn't notice any Sata Drives. I was told that I may have to do something with the kernel so it will recognize my Hard Drive. How would I do that?
I have been working on this for awhile now. On a side note, does it matter which Sata Plug the hard drive is on? Right now I have it on the 1st one but I would like to move it to the second one because I want a dual boot system. And yes I know I can use the same hard drive but I would like to keep them separated and use a switch to pick which OS system to use.
While running on the Live Cd, Ubuntu seems to know about my video card and ask to install some drivers but then it asked to be rebooted and it came back up not recognizing anything; video card and hard drive that is. On the live cd I ran the following commands: lswh, lspci, mount, and df. I am not too sure if they will show if the hard drive and the video card are working since I did them on the Live CD. Also on the lspci command, I did this after Ubuntu loaded the driver for the card.

I have a Desktop system using the Intel DG45ID motherboard with integrated graphics. I can't install from the 9.10 LiveCD. It can't find the Hard drive which is on the chipset's SATA controller.However, I can install 9.04 just fine. Windows server 2008
Ubuntu 10.04 server
I've got VMware installed. And I have spent the past 7 hours trying to figure out how to manage it. I found out that vsphere has not nor will ever be supported for Linux; which was my first problem.
Second Problem So I had to dig around for a spare Windows 7 dvd. To my UN-surprise it blue screened before it even got to the Windows installer.
Third Problem So I dug around for my Windows XP disc. Wouldn't find my sata hard drive and I wasn't about to dig around for a floppy drive and disk, in order to install it.
Fourth Problem I remembered that I had a dual boot of Windows 7 downstairs and proceeded to download and install vsphere. It wouldn't install because of some updates that needed to be installed. I installed them and got vsphere installed as well. However upon connecting to my vmware esxi, there was yet another error that had to do with some update. I found out that the error had been existent since 2009 and for some reason NO ONE at VMware has fixed it....
I just finished a build of a new GNU/Linux boxen with openSUSE 11.2. I have a MSI Big Bang Xpower X58 motherboard which has two SATA controller chips, one is the standard Intel ICH10R chip for SATA 3.0 Gb/s and one is the Marvell 9128 chip for SATA 6.0 Gb/s. The BIOS recognizes the Western Digital Caviar Black 6.0 Gb/s drive on either SATA controller chips, /however/ I am unable to install (and boot) when the drive is connected to the Marvell controlled ports. As you can guess, I'd like to boot from the faster interface!
1. The BIOS allows me to select the Western Digital drive as a secondary boot device, so I know, at least at the BIOS level, it's there. This is true whether I have the drive connected to the Intel or Marvell ports. (The DVD drive is the primary boot device.)
2. When trying to install openSUSE 11.2 from DVD, the installer says that it can't find any hard drives on my system when I have the drive connected to the Marvell port. The installer finds the drive fine when it is connected to the Intel port.
3. I installed everything with the drive connected to the Intel port. I switched the drive to the Marvell port afterward and the system refuses to boot completely, stalling at some point where it starts to look for other filesystem partitions. This led me to conclude that perhaps the problem is with openSUSE and not hardware weirdness with the system having two separate SATA controllers?

I installed Ubuntu 10.04, and happened to have an Silicom Images PCXpress card plugged in, and it kindly added the sil_sata module.This is fine for this chip set.I think that my earlier installation of Ubuntu 9.04 used Libata, which does support NCQ and also has good legacy support for the Intel Intel ICH7 chipset I have inside my Sony Vaio SZ notebook. Also, libata also support Silicon Image chipsets as far as I can tell from URL...I wish to remove the Silicom Images SATA modules and replace this with libata and then test the performance between the two device drivers.

That was bad, as I was unable to update. Then we tried a reboot and things got worse. Immediately after the bios info the message

appeared and the boot halted. The drive is new, we wrote to it and read from it during the install (I formatted it as ext3), but the box can't seem to find grub on it at boot, or it finds it and doesn't like it. If I reboot with the install DVD in the drive I can get a menu and "repair" (I think that was the choice) which gives me a login prompt, which I can tell "root", at which it responds with a shell prompt, but I don't know what I can do at that point to fix grub, or the SATA driver, or whatever needs fixing.
I'm strating with ubuntu (I have xubuntu 10.10), I installed jdownloader, after downloading a file and open its directory from jdownloader, the path is: /home/myname/.jdownloader/ download.But when I want to go to that path usding the file manager, I can't find /.jdownloader, I only see the folders: desktop, music, video etc but not .jdownloader.
