Intel Core i5, under Sound Configuration in YaST I have '5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio'and 'nVidia Corporation'I have built in speakers in my screen, connected via HDMI. I hear no sound from any source, neither via HDMI, nor via a separate sound cable connected to the sound connector on the back of the computer nor via the head phone jack on the front.

recently installed an NVidia GeForce 240 in my HTPC, and finally got it working correctly (as an HDMI-out display) n Lucid Lynx 64-bit.My problem now is that there is no sound, even though sound should be passing through, and I don't know where to begin to fix the issue.

Well almost no sound. The only way to get sound out is if i use the following command
speaker-test -D plughw:0,7 -c 2 /dev/urandom
I have the following line in /etc/pulse/default.pa
load-module module-alsa-sink device=plughw:0,7
But when i play any applications i hear no sound. For example "mplayer zion.mp3" results in silence.
When using pavucontrol, i see the sound bar moving for the hdmi hardware device. But i still hear nothing.
Does anyone know what could be wrong?

Can someone provide me with the exact instructions I need to backtrace pulseaudio? I have a bug that a developer is asking me to do a backtrace and the instructions on the ubuntu site aren't very good. I tried exactly what it said and my problem is that it says to "run the program under gdb by doing
gdb pulseaudio 2>&1 | tee ~/gdb-pulseaudio.txt
unfortunately pulseaudio isn't actually starting when I do this (I kill the program before I do this command, I also add the appropriate text file so pulse doesn't auto restart). Not sure what's going on but I'd appreciate any help as I can't get sound out of HDMI (I get it but it dies out fast).

For my mythtv/router box I'm trying to get the sound working trough hdmi as well as over the analog out. Because the HDMI is located on the mainboard and has something to do with the video driver I downloaded and installed the following:
ATI Catalyst™ 10.3 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver94.2 MB10.44/28/2010
However the output aplay -l is showing me(I got hdmi sound working on my laptop) isn't the same as on my laptop, it does not show the hdmi "sound card"
here is the output:
Code:
~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC883 Analog [ALC883 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
[code].....
I prefer sound trough hdmi but for the HDMI to work I previously needed to be able to see the HDMI device listed by aplay -l

I can not get any sound through my HDMI cable. Sound through my headphones works fine. But when I want sound to go through the HDMI and play on the monitor, there is no sound.
The HDMI cable is connected to my Radeon R9 270X graphics card.
My OS version is 8.1.
It works on Windows 8.1, so it is definitely an operating system problem.

I'm on Jessie, and use KDE.
Sound keeps coming from laptop's speakers, even when HDMI is connected to an external TV.
I've tried to fix this issue using both Pulse Audio Volume Control and KDE's System Settings -> Multimedia -> Audio and Video Settings. No luck. I've read several topics around, but there are plenty of variables to consider.

I have an HP 8510w laptop and I run ubuntu 10.04 out of an external harddrive.
I have no problem getting video over hdmi using the latest proprietary nvidia drivers however I cannot get sound through the HDMI cable.
I have read around without being able to find a solution.
Running "aplay -l" shows only my intel sound card and also there is no hdmi sound interface in the sound preferences (Only the normal output interface).
I am using the latest proprietary nvidia drivers (Believe it to be 1.95) and the graphics card is a Quadro FX 570.
how I can get sound out to work via the hdmi cable?

I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.10. Everything is working fine except I have no sound. When I use the command 'aplay -D hw:0,0 somefile.wav', I can get sound through headphones attached to the headphone jack. But I can't get any sound through the speakers. This is a dual boot desktop and the sound works fine under Windows, so no problems with hardware. The PC monitor is connected through a hdmi cable and I would need sound through the speakers. The output of alsa-info.sh is at

I'm using an HDMI connection, and the sound connection is unreliable at best. When it works, it is working fine, then all of a sudden (maybe because it isn't being actively used for an extended period of time)the sound connection vanishes. When at System --> Preferences --> Sound --> Output I'm not seeing any option for the HDMI connection currently and the sound is not working. All the volumes are unmuted and I cannot use a softphone nor .....,nor do videos that I have watched in the past with sound have any.
Last night when this happened, I rebooted and the sound was working just fine then. In the past, I was able to get the computer to recognize the HDMI connection has sound by momentarily unplugging it, then plugging it back in. Though both last night and today that hasn't worked. When I bought my computer, I had Windows 7 installed on it. The same thing was happening then, though it was always fixed via disconnecting the HDMI connection briefly, so there is the possibility of it being a hard ware issue.
I've also tried turning off the device (a HDTV in this case) and turning it back on, but that only solved it once or twice, and neither last night nor today. This is also a 64 bit computer, should that be relevant. Using Ubuntu 10.10, and the only available update to my system at the moment is Google Chrome, which I will be updating after this post.I will be restarting my computer after that update and posting back here if the sound is working, especially with note of whats listed at the System --> Preferences --> Sound --> Output if there are any additional options (from memory, there was an HDMI choice there).

I recently purchased a new video card a GeForce 550 Ti, but I haven't been able to get sound working over HDMI.
I'm running the latest version of Ubuntu (11.04) and have installed the proprietary drivers through Additional Drivers.
Code:
The card is being picked up by alsa and I've configured Ubuntu to use HDMI in sound preferences:
aplay -l:
Code:
When I check alsamixer this is what I see:
ALSA reports that version 1.0.23 is installed, although I thought 11.04 came with version 1.0.24?
cat /proc/asound/version:
Code:
I've tried purging ALSA and reinstalling it but it didn't help. Is there anything I can do? Does anyone know if this card is supported by ALSA properly yet? I hate the thought of having to go to Windows to get this working

I have an HTPC running Ubuntu 11.04 and Boxee. Main sound is through HDMI (nVidia MCP73). I would also like to use the headphone jack on the computer from time to time (kids sleeping, etc). Is this possible? I've browsed around here but haven't found anything definitive. I've monkeyed around with the settings in alsamixer quite a bit and haven't found anything promising.

Just thought I might save someone some time if they are trying to use Mythbuntu with a Samsung LED TV. If you run into the issue where the desktop is larger than the screen even with everything set to 1920x1080i and you tried a customized EDID file to no avail. Go into the menu on the TV and select Source List, Edit Name, then chose the HDMI and change the name to be either PC, DVI or DVI-PC. Either of these three setting should correct the over sized display issue.
Now if you happen to want audio over HDMI and are using the HDMI Computer connector that Samsung so nicely provides. Make sure you don't choose either of the DVI options above as these mute the audio coming over the HDMI connector and instead enable the pin audio jack next to the HDMI connector.

To be more precise , my graphic card is an Nvidia GTX 295 with hdmi output to a Dell 2408W LCD screen and the problem is that linux can't see the hdmi connection, working just with DVI or VGA. I also have Windows 7 in dual boot with linux and in windows it works just fine. To mention that i tried several linux distributions: Ubuntu, Ubuntu ultimate 2.7 and Sabayon 5.4.

I do realize, that there are a lot of other threads regarding this problem. I've spent almost the whole day today reading and trying them out, and at the end, I figured out, that none of them worked for me.
So, I'll provide as much info as possible... code...
Unfortunately, none of this worked, and even after the first 2 methods I didn't have ANY sound at all!
Please help me, I need this in order to have my speakers plugged into the monitor, so I can control the volume via the remote control.
In order to dissolve any suspections to a defect hardware, I'd like to add, that this is perfectly working under Windows 7, 64-bit edition.

I have a Laptop with Fedora 15, with an NVidia graphic card, when I attach my TV screen as secondary screen using the HDMI cable video works perfectly, but sound comes only from my laptop's integrated speakers; if I open Pulse configuration and set to "HDMI output" profile, no sound comes from either the TV set or my laptop's speakers.
I've tried checking the .conf file, updating NVidia drivers, and anything that I have read in this forum but I still have no sound from the TV set when I use the HDMI cable.

I am having trouble getting sound over hdmi with my Nvidia MCP7A HDMI. The strange thing is that everything works fine in a Live disc, but once I do a fresh install of that Live disc I get no sound, even though my configuration is exactly the same (as far as I can tell). I've checked the little things like alsamixer volumes, aplay -l, etc etc. Everything looks good to me. I can reproduce on multiple TVs so its not the receiver. Video drivers are the same in both live version and installed. aplay -l detects my device. sound/pci/hda/patch_nvhdmi.c already has my correct vendor id in it. Perhaps the following info can figure out what my installed environment is lacking.

I can't get HDMI sound reliably when using Ubuntu. The strange thing is, if I repeatedly reboot the computer, eventually the sound will work. This can take anything up to 10 reboots. Once working, it will keep on working as long as the machine is not rebooted or shut down. HDMI sound works fine under Windows.
aplay -l will only list the Intel (analogue and S/PDIF) hardware, not the Nvidia, even when it is working. Selecting between analogue and digital output under Sound Preferences has no effect on the HDMI either way.

Video is ok, but never any sound. I went through and made sure the HDMI is selected as the audio device and I upgraded to the latest driver binary.
HDMI sound works without the ATI proprietary driver installed, but the needed resolution is not available and the picture overlaps the edges on my 32" LCD. At least I know it is not a hardware issue. ALSA is loaded and selected as the sound manager, but the volume controls don't appear in the ALSA slider console.
I tested the cable and display on another computer. I am using a new Gigabyte GA-MA78LM-SH2, it is the integrated video.
