Hardware :: No TtyUSB Appearing When Flash Drive Plugged In
Apr 11, 2010
I am having some problems with the USB ports. Some people said when you hot plug a device into USB port, under /dev will appear a ttyUSB*. But for my laptop, no matter what device I plug into the USB port (say a flash drive). There are only bunch of usbdev1.1_ep00, usbdev1.2_ep00, usbdev1.3_ep00 and usbmon* files, but not any ttyUSB*? I want to know is what is the difference between ttyUSB and usbdev1.1_ep00 files?

Ubuntu 64-bit
Chromium
Every once in a while, clicking the fullscreen icon on a Flash video will result in the video playback overlay appearing behind the actual browser requiring the browser to be minimised to see the video. Sometimes this will minamise both and I can't watch it at all. Reproducible with this video [URL]

When the drive is switched on at server start up my dev directory is updated accordingly (I got the entry /dev/VolGroup01/.... ; but when I switch on the server and later on attach the usb drive and switch it on I can't use it through LVM because the drive never appears under /dev/mapper/ or /dev/ even tough dmesg says that a drive was found and attached to sdb. Install of 10.4 64 bit not showing choice of sata drives on install. W 7 on sata a drive, SUSE 11 on sata b drive. Need to load Ubuntu 10.4 on drive b, but not given choice of drives on the install. Only "clear drive" listed on the install window.
This is not the case on 32 bit, a graph with drives listed. W7 a runs Adobe CS5, the Ubuntu 10.4 has excellent font, type display on the live cd.

I have connected (sata cable I mean) the drive where I have got my Ubuntu installation to another pc with windows 7 64 bits (but I think that 32 and 64 doesn't make difference). Windows 7 doesn't boot. So I thought it may be some kind of issue with the hard drive itself (but the drive is healthy), anyway I have plugged one drive from one NAS (you know, NAS drives are linux partitioned and formatted).Same result: windows 7 doesn't boot.
Windows 7 boot sequence hangs and at the next boot prompts
"Repair windows installation"
"Boot windows normally"
(and obviously none of the options works)
Looks really like that Windows 7 doesn't boot if any linux partitioned and formatted drive is present.

I made a persistent install of Ubuntu on a flash drive. I made changes to that installation. The software (Unetboontin) sets this all up. I think it partitions it for you. How do I image that flash drive to another flash drive?

In Fedora 15, when I plug a USB drive, Nautilus will automatically open and show whats inside of it. I'm working in a project where I have to plug and unplug USB drives many times, and Nautilus opening every time is really annoying. I tried to use gconf-edit and set the keys apps>nautilus>preferences>media_automount and media_automount_open to false, but it didn't work.

Is there a way to auto run a script when a usb hard drive is plugged in without creating a udev rule or something similar. The idea is that no matter which computer I plug the drive into it runs the script automatically (I want to EXPORT some directories when the drive is plugged in)?

I finally got my new internal hdd for my laptop. I plugged it in and installed windows 7 64 bit. Then I partitioned my external hdd (WD mybook 640gb), and installed ubuntu 9.1 on a 200gb partition of it. The problem is that I didn't unplug the internal hdd before I installed ubuntu. Now the computer will not start unless I have the external hard drive plugged in.
So what should I do so that I will be able to go into windows 7 normally if the external hdd is unplugged? I would also like to be able to use ubuntu when I plug in the external hdd. I wouldn't mind having to go to the boot menu and choosing the external hard drive every time I wanted to use ubuntu.
The reason I partitioned the external hard drive was because it has a lot more space than my 250gb internal hdd, and I also wanted to leave space open to use as was intended, to back up stuff.
However, now that I think about it, I wouldn't mind partitioning the internal hdd and just leaving the external blank (which I should have done in the first place).

On ubuntu I try to access a PIC-controler via the ttyUSB0. I send a few command bytes and get the status from the controler. My C code works without problems on ttyS0 but with the usb-to-serial adapter (I tried two with defferent chipsets pl2303 + ch341-uart) it just sends but can't read from the controller.
With minicom I can communicate with an other computer without problems but in my code there must be something wrong for the ttyUSB.
Here my code for the termios configuration:

I had this corrupted external hdd and so I formatted the main partition on it on windows but messed up in the formatting and ended up having to format the entire thing. I got some weird message about it not being initialized (no not mounted) so I was in compmgmt.msc in windows and right clicked it in device manager and it asked for master boot or GUID I selected the latter and formatted. Worked fine and all for a bit but now it doesn't show up as a drive. I noticed when using compmgmt.msc it showed up that it had installed driver software and was being recognized but in the partition editing area there was nothing on this drive, reinstalling driver software doesn't seem to help. Also GParted wont load up when I have it plugged in and Disk Utility doesn't show it. I am requesting help to fix this problem within Ubuntu 10.10 somehow so I can use it properly.

I have 32 gigabytes of my hard drive wasted with a vistool installation a flaky don't look at me wrong or I will brake and you will have to reinstall me stinking winbloze
simple I want to fly my radio controlled helicopter and both programs that configure the radio transmitter so it talks sense to the model are windoze only almost (the wrong driver for the interface cable came with it the driver crashed and scrambled the configuration of the transmitter) the lesson here is XP drivers DO NOT! work with Vis-Stool
One of them will run on .NET (for windoze) and wine (I have no idea of how to install .net for linux ) it just dose not talk to the interface cable witch has a linux kernel module and connects the cable to /dev/ttyUSB0
Is there a way to make /dev/ttyUSB0 show up as a COM4 in wine.

Back in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.
I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.
Is there anything I should chage, use, since I'm running it off a flash drive??
I have 3 seperat drives, 2 x 16 gigs and an 8 gig, and was wandering which one would be best for booting off of? What do I look for??
Here's what I got:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] RS880 Host Bridge
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Toshiba America Info Systems Device 9602
00:06.0 PCI bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] RS780 PCI to PCI bridge (PCIE port 2)

I bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

OK - shows me the directory and files.
Code:

if there was a program where a flash drive can be used as a cd. The reason I asked is I used cd-writing programs (Brasero, k3b, etc) for music cds to rip into lossless formats (AAC and FLAC), and it sometimes does not come out right from ripping. And thought writing to the flash drive would get rid of those little errors in the songs since there are no moving parts..
