I have installed ubuntu 10.10 on and external usb drive and now my computer which runs XP will not boot unless the external drive is connected and on. Can I by pass this situation or do I have to uninstall ubuntu altogether and start over?

I finally got my new internal hdd for my laptop. I plugged it in and installed windows 7 64 bit. Then I partitioned my external hdd (WD mybook 640gb), and installed ubuntu 9.1 on a 200gb partition of it. The problem is that I didn't unplug the internal hdd before I installed ubuntu. Now the computer will not start unless I have the external hard drive plugged in.
So what should I do so that I will be able to go into windows 7 normally if the external hdd is unplugged? I would also like to be able to use ubuntu when I plug in the external hdd. I wouldn't mind having to go to the boot menu and choosing the external hard drive every time I wanted to use ubuntu.
The reason I partitioned the external hard drive was because it has a lot more space than my 250gb internal hdd, and I also wanted to leave space open to use as was intended, to back up stuff.
However, now that I think about it, I wouldn't mind partitioning the internal hdd and just leaving the external blank (which I should have done in the first place).
whenever Ubuntu boots, it searches for an external hard drive that I no longer have plugged in. It hangs on the Ubuntu load screen for a while, then says that it cannot find the drive and I have to press (S) to skip the attempt.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThis sounds strange, but my laptop (running 11.2) won't boot correctly unless my external HDD (ext3) is on and plugged in. If I don't turn it on, it hangs at the start of udev. If I press ctrl+c, the system continues to boot, but the keyboard and mouse don't activate... don't function, etc. But I can press my power button and it does shut down. Going through dmesg (during a successful boot with the external HDD on), I saw this (not sure if it is relevant):

The device sdb1 is the HDD.
Now, I don't know much about udev. I can tell you that I have no sdb1 lines in /etc/fstab, and I have no autofs references to it.
I had this corrupted external hdd and so I formatted the main partition on it on windows but messed up in the formatting and ended up having to format the entire thing. I got some weird message about it not being initialized (no not mounted) so I was in compmgmt.msc in windows and right clicked it in device manager and it asked for master boot or GUID I selected the latter and formatted. Worked fine and all for a bit but now it doesn't show up as a drive. I noticed when using compmgmt.msc it showed up that it had installed driver software and was being recognized but in the partition editing area there was nothing on this drive, reinstalling driver software doesn't seem to help. Also GParted wont load up when I have it plugged in and Disk Utility doesn't show it. I am requesting help to fix this problem within Ubuntu 10.10 somehow so I can use it properly.

The reason i want ubuntu for is to use it while watching movies or chatting osv and use xp for games and my animation programs since they tend to be quite hard to get to work on ubuntu.
I am having trouble booting ubuntu 11.04 from my external hard drive, i did a custom instal using the 11.04 CD.
i made 4 partitions
/dev/sda1 ext2 /boot 1024mb (1gb)
/dev/sda5 swap 4096mb (4gb)
/dev/sda6 ext4 / 10240mb (10gb)
/dev/sda7 ext4 /home 204800mb (200gb)
and i put grub on the one what was mounted to /boot.
but my problem is when i restart my computer it just starts up windows.
my external hard drive is on, i have it set to boot from removable storage or something like ehtat first. i forget what i just know that booting from my internal hard drive is set to last so it should boot from the external.
I originally had windows vista on my pc and then I installed ubuntu on a partition, then I decided that I wanted ubuntu to be installed on my external hard drive so that it can be run on any computer, so I installed linux on my external hard drive then I deleted the linux partitions on my internal hard drive, then to further complicate thing I decided that I wanted grub un-installed because it ran slow when reading off of a external hard drive and just use dell's normal boot selector so I inserted my vista cd and ran /fixmbr and /fixboot which deleted GRUB and returned the default booting into vista, now my problem is that when I try to run linux by using dell's boot devices options It won't run and says that 'there is no boot manager installed'. Is it possible to have ubuntu on a external hard drive so that it can be booted from any computer? if so, how can I do it?

I have installed Ubuntu on unallocated space on my external, the first time I chose to put the bootloader on the external but when I booted up the computer and held the Option key it didn't recognize an OS to boot from.I am currently reinstalling Ubuntu but placing the bootloader on the internal hard drive hoping that the Mac boot menu will recognize an OS to boot from.

Windows 7 doesn't boot. So I thought it may be some kind of issue with the hard drive itself (but the drive is healthy), anyway I have plugged one drive from one NAS (you know, NAS drives are linux partitioned and formatted).Same result: windows 7 doesn't boot.

Looks really like that Windows 7 doesn't boot if any linux partitioned and formatted drive is present.
I have got a 1TB USB hard drive, which I partitioned to be 500GB NTFS and on the other half I installed Debian 8.1.0. During graphical install I selected to install the bootloader not to the MBR but also to the external drive. After completing the installation I wanted to boot into Debian, but it just started Windows, which is installed on my internal. Even after choosing the USB drive in the boot menu, Windows booted. I later installed the bootloader to my internal, then I could boot into both Debian and Windows, but only if my hard drive was plugged in.

I have downloaded the "debian-8.3.0-amd64-netinst.iso" and have extracted it to my external hard drive. The letter assigned to this drive is "I". When I shut it down and enter the boot settings, it asks me for a name and a path for a new boot option. I have tried many different paths including:

I renamed the original Debian download (debian-8.3.0-amd64-netinst.iso) to "debian" so I didn't have to type the long file name into the path. I have Ubuntu/Vista dual boot desktop with Single HDD (200GB) that i cloned to an external USB HDD (320GB) using clonezilla. My intention is to use the external HDD as a backup to up running in case my 3 year old desktop HDD fails. To make sure the clone is good to use if need, i connected external HDD to USB port and tried boot from it but got "Error 18". I tried to Google got some infoDid a fdisk -lu and got the following.

i currently have lucid installed on my laptop hard drive. i took this drive out and then on a new drive in its place i have installed windows 7. reason why i couldn't put windows 7 on the same drive is that i have a BIOS based system and the hard drive is GPT based not MBR. therefore, i couldn't get windows back on it.
I figured that using an esata expresscard interface i should be able to use the Windows 7 drive externally without much speed penalty since ExpressCard in my case is implemented on PCI Express and not USB.
So i can update grub using

and Windows 7 appears on the list. However, when i select this option during boot, it gives me errors that indicates that the external drive cannot be found (not surprising)
My guess is that when GRUB appears, the external hard drive has not been detected yet, and the modules for the expresscard may only be loaded during the boot process of lucid.
So I am wondering if there is anyway I can get this to work. meaning use lucid on my main drive and boot to Windows 7 from the external drive time to time.
I have an Acer netbook that I installed Remix on. Now I can't get the thing to boot from the CD drive which is connected via the USB port. Any suggestions? I set the boot order with the CD drive first and the HD last.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter I select to boot Ubuntu (I dual boot Vista Ultimate 64.), it just sits at a black screen with the blinking dash.Cannot enter anything and it will just sit there. But if I plug in my Flash Drive it will boot into Ubuntu either before starting the computer or while Im stuck in the black screen.Plugging in the drive while I am in the black screen will make it boot right up. The drive will light up and a couple lines that quickly say something will show up on the screen and then it boots.This Flash Drive contains Ubuntu and is what I used to Install Ubuntu.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI been meaning to install some linux distro on my external hdd to enjoy the renowned desktop experience, so far I installed sabayon first but it wasn't working very sharply and a friend of mine recommended me to just install ubuntu. Anyhow, since the first time I installed sabayon I could not boot vista when the external HDD is not plugged in. I get a grub rescue command prompt. I don't have a vista cd because my laptop came with the whole recovery function installed on a vista partition. I can boot that from the grub menu, from there I did a boot system restore, but I still get the same error. I'd like to be able to boot vista without having the external HDD on of course.

I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. I have an Asus eee901 netbook and it's got an Intel 945 graphics card. If I boot it up, log in, attach an external monitor and then open the Display Settings dialog the screen goes black and the laptop appears to crash. Leaving it for a minute or two does nothing.
However, if I boot up with the external monitor attached then I can open the Display Settings dialog and configure both screens.
This is quite annoying as I've got to reboot if I want to connect an external monitor.
Additionally, if booted with the monitor attached and I choose a configuration where the width of the combined screens is greater than 2048, the screens go black and the same lock up appears to occur. Could it be that the Display Settings dialog isn't checking for the maximum display width the driver supports and is then crashing in both scenarios?
i have installed fedora 14 with so many libraries ,development tools installed on my pc but i usually have to present some projects which can run on my system .........and can't be executed or compiled due to absence of libraries and tools there so, i there some way to so that i can use this current installation on my hard drive of my pc to some external media like external hard disk and plug and use that installation anywhere on any system..

From that time I wasn't able to use my computer until I discovered ubuntu and used it on my netbook. I, then, downloaded Windows 7 (lite) and got it on my netbook. The only problem that bugs me is that I want ubuntu and windows 7 and I cant because there is less disk space.

i have created a live ubunto live cd from an iso file...this cd boots just fine. however, after a successfull installation onto my usb e -hdd, and a restart that spits out the live cd from the rom, my pc absolutely will not boot from the "installed version".i did the install with the internal hard drive dis connectedthe live cd will run just fineubuntu is installed correctly on the external and restartsat this point (no live cd in the dvd drive) the ehd will not boot..pc just sits therei choose booer options and choose the ehd.....this cycles through a few dos commands looking for internet and what not but will never boot
View 9 Replies View RelatedBecause a lot of users are using laptops now, and many want externals hard drives for backups, is there a program in Ubuntu (cross-platform with Windows would be nice) that backs up files to an external hard drive when the external drive is plugged in or on a timely basis? All backup systems seem to have a timed system, but these systems have annoying pop ups if your backup location is non-existant (e.g. Deja Dup).
Use case 1: I plug in my external, the program recognizes that and starts a backup.
Use case 2: I leave my external in all day and every 6 hours, my laptop backs up my files to it.
I recently installed CentOS 5.3 (from DVD media) on a Seagate 320GB external USB drive; this drive is connected to an Intel-based desktop computer (Intel D945GNT motherboard) with two internal SATA drives (both NTFS, as I'm running Windows XP SP3 as my primary OS). The install found the USB drive fine, and I manually configured my partitions; I had the install place the boot loader in the first sector of the boot partition of the external USB drive. I had set my BIOS to boot from the USB drive first; after a reboot, nothing happened...no GRUB menu, nada.
After some research, I had found an article discussing the need to rebuild the initrd for USB drive support. So, I booted the computer from the CentOS DVD, then went into 'linux rescue' mode; once I was at a command prompt, I navigated to the /boot directory and executed the following command:
mkinitrd --with-usb --preload=ehci-hcd --preload=usb-storage --preload=scsi_mod --preload=sd_mod ./usbinitrd-2.6.18-128.el5 2.6.18-128.el5
After the new "usbinitrd" was created, I edited grub.conf to reflect the new image, then attempted the reboot again from the USB drive. Still no GRUB menu.
I am trying to boot from an external hard drive, and have tried to use unetbootin like I used when crating a bootable usb drive but it does not see my external and will not create bootbale iso for me to run from my external hard drive.

Both systems will boot up fine its just that for some reason it won't boot to the internal drive (with vista) unless the external is connected. I just put the HD in another laptop only to have the same problem.
