Hardware :: Installed Fglrx - Now Monitor Turns Off During Boot?

Sep 20, 2010

I have just installed an ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro (AGP) in my tower, which is running Ubuntu 10.04. I installed the fglrx driver via Jockey, and ran 'aticonfig --initial', with no errors. Now, when I boot, it gets as far as the plymouth splash screen, and the display turns off, and the power light flashes on and off. If I boot in failsafe and use the backed up confguration, it works fine again. The monitor I am using is quite an old one - a 17" CRT with maximum resolution of 1152x864. I do not know the vendor.

Here is the output of xorg.conf

Quote:

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "aticonfig Layout"
Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0
EndSection

Fedora :: Monitor Turns Off After 10 Minutes?

Feb 8, 2011

FC13. In Screensaver, I've made sure no screensaver is selected. In Power Management, PowerDevil is unchecked, profile is set to "performance" and that profile is set to never dim the screen. In fact, just to be sure, I edited all the other unselected profiles to not dim the screen. I've done this as a user, and I've done this as root. My monitor still gets turned off at the 10 minutes mark (I used a stopwatch).

Site search only turned up this thread, but I'm using kde not gnome, and I can't locate a screensaver daemon to kill.

Ubuntu :: Monitor Turns Off After 10-15 Minutes?

Sep 28, 2010

I've read many posts about other people having this issue and I can't seem to find one that is the same problem I am having. I'm totally new to ubuntu and linux as well for that matter, Basically I wanted to give linux a try and started doing some research and liked everything I read about ubuntu. I went to the website and used the wubi (I think that was what it was called) to install ubuntu. Now when I boot my computer it asks me which operating system I would like to use. I navigate to ubuntu and press enter and it starts up with no problems what so ever.

At first I was really surprised with how easy the installation was and how great everything was going, however. After looking around for about 10 minutes, the screen abruptly went black and then my monitor had a small blue box on it with "No input" on it before the light went from blue to orange. I tried hitting every combination of keys I could think of and in the end had to do a hard restart.

Long story short. every time I use ubuntu my monitor shuts off after about 10-20 minutes, regardless of what activity I am doing. I've tried going to /apps/gnome-power-manager/timeout/ to make sure that sleep_display_ac was set to 0 (it was), I've turned off power management using the power manger under preferences. No matter what I have tried, it continues to be a problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Monitor Turns Off At Start Install 10.04?

the problem is: my monitor turns off when I want to install ubuntu! t's really pissing me off right now.Explanation:right now, I'm using Ubuntu 9.10, and I want to installUbuntu 10.04, so I made a bootable usb, and i booted my computeron this usb. so far, there's nothing going wrong. First, I had to select a language for Ubuntu, so I did that. After that, I had to choose want i want to do with ubuntu,so I selected (of course) "install Ubuntu".Then i got the loading screen, and after a short time, suddenly my monitor turns off

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Fglrx Doesn't Detect Monitor?

Sep 14, 2010

I'm running 10.04 on a Radeon HD 4650 card with fglrx. The driver installation went without a hitch, and the log file contained no errors.

When I try to run

Code:
aticonfig --initial
i get the response
Code:
Found fglrx primary device section
Unable to find any supported Screen sections
Running

[Code]....

My best guess is that I have to write an Xorg.conf file, in which I say what type of monitor I have.

I cannot do that, as I need to shut down the Xserver in order to make it generate my xorg.conf file. When I shut it down I get the black screen.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Fglrx Driver For ATI Card Pushes Monitor Out Of Range?

Feb 21, 2010

fglrx driver for ATI card pushes monitor out of range

I am running Ubuntu 9.10, my video card is ATI Radeon HD 3600

Heres my issue:

When I originally attempted to enable desktop effects, I was told that I was unable to do so. Not being one to rush to ask a question, I tried to figure out the issue, and it seemed to be that I needed to install the fglrx driver available for ATI cards- a simple enough fix. I installed the driver, and rebooted my machine, and everything seemed to be fine- the initial splash page came up- but immediately afterwards (presumably when I reached the login screen) My monitor went out of range.

Not being strong in coding, I was unable to figure out a way to remove the driver without a GUI (though I think I very well could have), so I had to uninstall and reinstall (no sweat, I hadn't really started anything yet). However, its obvious that the fglrx driver is what blew it out of range.

My question is, is there anything I can do to get this driver to work on my machine? I found similar questions but they all seemed either to be slightly different from my issue or recommended changing the .xorg file, which does not exist in 9.10.

Fedora :: Updated To 15 - And Installed My Fglrx / Catalyst Ati Drivers ?

May 26, 2011

Today I spend the day updating to Fedora 15 (from 14). And by spent the day updating to Fedora 15, I mean that like the last 3 updates I've tried with Fedora, they end up getting hosed and I was forced to rebuild using a live disk. That being said I was able to install a fresh instance of Fedora, as well as use leigh123linux's "F15,F14, F13 & F12 Nvidia driver guides" thread to install the necessary drivers on my machine. However after the last reboot, I'm stuck with a funky top screen.

General :: Use A Framebuffer And Using "vga=791" (1024x768) In Grub The Monitor Turns Itself Off?

Sep 11, 2010

When booting up the linux distro everything boots up fine. However the linux terminal shows "-Bash:" and doesn't show the current directory. This may be fine for some people but I need to know what directory I am working in and having it displayed would make things a LOT easier.

Sadly though I can't find any useful information about doing this.I found something like "PS1=w" but that doesn't do anything at all. Oh yeah and I don't have a .bashrc nor a /etc/bashrc for some reason. Also when trying to use a framebuffer and using "vga=791" (1024x768) in grub the monitor turns itself off. This applies if I set vga to anything. I believe I compiled framebuffer support in the kernel but I am not 100% sure so if you believe that is the problem then I will double check. That would require redownloading the source again and networking hasn't been set up yet so.

Also what packages does "iwconfig", "ifconfig", and "dhcpcd" come in? Those are the tools I commonly used to connect to my wireless internet but they are not present in the linux distro.

Ubuntu Installation :: FGLRX Black Screen At Boot?

Mar 1, 2011

I wouldnt be posting here because I like to solve my problems by myself but I just dont know what else to do. I want to go back to the ubuntu world and I tried Kubuntu. After Installing the Fglrx drivers after a fresh install (10.10 32 bits) through the restricted drivers it shows an ugly font ubuntu loading screen and after that the screen turns "off" (like if there was no signal, the "on/off" light flickers) and it stays like that, but I can use the Ctrl+alt+f1 console. Installing the drivers from ati webiste ends in the same result as before. Downloaded Ubunt 10.10 32 bit and installed it, same results. I have a Radeon HD 3300 integrated. I dont know what to do. The open source drivers works well, but there is no 1280x1024 resolution in the screen manage

Multimedia :: Ubuntu 10.10 Won't Boot After Attempted Install Of ATI FGLRX Driver / Sort It?

Jan 17, 2011

I'm running 10.10 from an 8GB USB flash drive with persistence to see if I can get it working the way I need it before I can completely transition from Windows. I have an onboard ATI Radeon HD3300 running dual monitors which is on the list of supported devices for the FGLRX driver package, but I've encountered multiple issues.

First, when I chose to activate it from the Add'l Drivers dialog, it gave an error: "SystemError: installArchives() failed". I found a forum where someone had suggested opening the Terminal and giving the following commands:sudo aticonfig --initialfollowed bysudo rebootWhen my system rebooted, the Ubuntu screen showed "Ubuntu 10.10" in a plain font instead of the Ubuntu graphical logo, and then it quickly displays an error in a dark-colored font and then the screen flickers several times before stopping at a full-screen terminal. I have never used Linux before, so I don't know any commands at all or even what to do from here. I just want the dual screens to work and have the correct resolution.

Am I going to have to format and reload my flash drive again?

Software :: Two Grubs - Installed Ubuntu 10.04 - Boot Using Windows 7 Boot Manager ?

May 6, 2010

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04.

I'd like to boot using Windows 7 boot manager (I don't dare to put grub in the MBR).

I've used EasyBCD to add a new entry for Ubuntu.

[url]

Then I added Grub to /dev/sda3

And I get this:

[url]

The problem is that it always shows (hd0,0) instead of (hd0,2). I must change it every time I boot. I've tried to install grub again but I always get the same.

And another problem. After that Grub menu it deesn't load Linux but it loads a second grub menu [url] that loads Linux properly.

I guess I've installed two Grubs.

How can I remove the first Grub menu (Grub4dos) and make Windows 7 load the second (the good one)? or how can I remove the second one and change (hd0,0) to (hd0,2) in the second?

Debian Installation :: Installed Dual Boot 6 RC2 / No Boot At All

Apr 17, 2011

Before the installation, I had triple boot of WinXP, Win 7, Ubuntu 10.10. As you can guess, the main boot-loader was grub. The second is Win 7 boot loader, and there it gives the option what to choose, load XP or Win 7.I made a decision to remove Ubuntu and install Debian(you know better than me why I did). So first, I searched a guide how to un-dual-boot. It told me to delete the two partition that Ubuntu use(swap and ext4) and write to MBR the win 7 boot-loader(using EasyBCD), so I delete them and use EeasyBCD. At this stage, I had 2 partitions: NTFS for XP and NTFS for Win 7, and the Win 7 boot-loader(and XP) worked pretty well.I install the latest testing of Debian(6 RC2) from DVD1 using this guide, except I choose to use the graphical installer, ext4(not ext3 as there), install the desktop environment, and choose to install grub(even know it didn't asked me). The swap partition I set is 3 GB because my RAM is 2 GB, even know that ubuntu set it in the past to 2 GB.The installation went pretty well, just when come to grub package, it says that there was an error with installing grub package(it didn't told me what), I had no choice, so I choose to skip over grub/lilo and finish with no boot manager. I was thinking to myself: "So I couldn't install grub, at least I have the Win 7 boot-loader(which contain XP loader), and maybe Win 7 boot-loader will recognize Debian too.". But I end up with no boot at all.It told me than when choose not to install boot-manager that I need to load /vmlinuz and give it the parameter root=/dev/sda4(my deb partition).I think that if I could install grub, I could load all my boots("sudo grub update" right?).How can I fix it?

Most times if I wait for a while it will "colorize" itself after a moment or two and I'm right back to doing whatever I was doing.,I was just wondering if anybody could tell me why this happens?

I have noticed that the AutoTen program does the same thing while an application is being installed. The terminal-style window will open and start doing all the important stuff, and the GUI will grey out until it's done... I just don't understand why FireFox would be doing this...
