Hardware :: Getting Infrared Remote Controls Working With Laptop?

Aug 4, 2010

I have a new Dell Studio XPS laptop (I have used dell laptops for many many years running Fedora linux). And for the first time I want to setup the Infrared remote control in the laptop.

That is I like to set up a remote to start and stop movies and sound playback.

I installed LIRC and after reboot I see devices such as /dev/ircomm0 to /dev/ircom31 as well as /dev/irnet

So what next?

The LIRC website just goes on about using serial dongles, but nothing on setting up a laptop with a built-in IR sensor. It also talks about using irrecord, but that program complains about no /dev/lirc0 device.

I tried installing a "gnome-lirc-properties" (whcih also installed "lirc-remotes" package), but it fails with a verbose 'python traceback' that doesn't tell you what is wrong.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.04 + VLC + Infrared Remote?

May 19, 2010

I've got an HP Pavillion dv9000 laptop, the type that come with an HDMI port and a built in Windows media center remote.

How do I make it work with VLC? I've done a little research, and I've installed lirc. It now sorta works with Totem, but not at all with VLC. What am I doing wrong?

Hardware :: Infrared Remote On Macbook - Debian

Aug 29, 2010

I'm trying to get mythtv running on a macbook (2nd gen) and have got to the point where most things are working. But I am struggling with the IR Receiver and a non-apple remote control. I have lirc installed and the IR device is detected as an inbuilt HID usb device and the device file /usr/usb/hiddev0 works as the lirc device for the apple remote.

Trouble is the apple remote with its 6 buttons is not very useful in mythtv. I have a leadtek DTV tuner and it came with a remote that has lots of buttons so I would like to use that. Unfortunately, even getting the raw data from the remote doesn't seem to return valid data for that or any other remote I have apart from the apple remote.

I'm running

To see the raw data from the remote. For the apple remote I usually get 32 bytes/button push and bytes 20 and 28 change for each button. All the other remotes return the same 32 bytes regardless of the button pushed.

These are:

For the apple remote I get:

Where xx is different for each button. The values for the codes in the lircd.conf for each button are 32 bit quantities made up of the 5th, 13th, 21st and 29th bytes (ie: for the six apple remote button codes you have 0x87EEF0xx where xx is 0B, 0D, 08, 07, 04 or 02)

Has anyone got this working for a macbook with non-apple remote? Any other pointers on what I could look at next?

Ubuntu :: Brightness Controls Were Not Working?

Mar 9, 2010

I took the courage yesterday to install ubuntu 9.10. Internet was working absolutely fine (wireless), but brightness controls were not working (they still don't). So I went to this page https://wiki.ubuntu.co/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting, and ran following command(s) killall gnome-settings-daemon gnome-power-manager Now since then I cant get the internet working, and cant see the wifi connection on task bar. I have restarted the laptop but no avail.

PS: any help on how I can reduce the brightness of monitor. I am using SONY VIAO VGN FZ38M, with Nvidia 8400M GT. I have tried several threads and tried all sorts of things, like xbacklight, or somthing to do with sudo .VGA/LCD/brightness.etc.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: USB Soundcard Volume Controls With Laptop Volume Keys?

Oct 29, 2010

I've got my xubuntu 10.10 install just about perfect on a little acer aspire d250, apart from a small sound useability issue: In the interests of simplicity and resource usage I removed pulseaudio. After a bit of fiddling I got it so that my USB soundcard (ProDac) is recognized and automatically set as the default soundcard when plugged in. Any sound applications automatically use the USB sound if it present, no need to around with pulse. The only problem is that my netbook's volume control keys still only control the master volume of the inbuilt soundcard, and have no effect on the usb sound. Does anyone know of a way to change which sound device these keys actually effect? I'd like to write a little script so that when the usb device is detected the keys are remapped.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Acer Aspire 4810T Laptop - Hardware Brightness Keys System Slowdowns, Software Controls Don't Work

Mar 14, 2011

I have an Acer 4810T laptop with Intel graphics. I run openSUSE 11.3, and am about to upgrade to 11.4. But both systems still have a very bad bug with screen brightness. The Fn+Arrow keys do change screen brightness, but after using them the system is rendered extremely sluggish and unresponsive. This sluggishness is most pronounced with a very important Wine app I need to use. The only way to fix the sluggishness is to reboot. With 11.4, the problem is worse because the system boots and automatically partially dims the screen, thus making it even more necessary to change the brightness. Neither Gnome nor KDE are able to change the brightness via their power managers. This means that I can't dim my screen automatically upon disconnecting the A/C power.

I have read many experiences from Ubuntu and openSUSE users, who all have the same problem. I have tried both intellegacy and the new intel drivers, and they both have the problem. I have read that some users have improved the situation by upgrading or downgrading the BIOS. Others have been experimenting with kernel patches:

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Test That Infrared Device Detected

Apr 4, 2010

I am new to linux having just abandoned Windows due to stability issues. I have a Hauppage remote with a usb ir receiver. This worked fine under windows using the drivers for the windows media center remote. I can't however get this to work under Linux. What I am really looking for is a method, perhaps using a command line in the terminal window to be able to test and see if the OS has actually detected the device. I have tried irw, but there is no response. If I know that the device is connected, then I can start looking at issues of identifying the correct drivers for the device.

Fedora :: Setup Graphical Remote Connection To Laptop Via VNC?

Jan 22, 2011

Fresh installation of Fedora 14 x86-64 on Lenovo T510. I'm trying to setup graphical remote connection to this laptop via VNC. I installed vnc-server package and altered /etc/sysconfig/vncservers accordingly:

Code:
VNCSERVERS="2:awajda"
VNCSERVERARGS[2]="-geometry 800x600 -nolisten tcp -localhost"

I found Remote Desktop which opens vino-preferences and ticked the check boxes there. I started vnc-server and then I tried to connect to it from the same local host using vncviewer. I got no errors and the window with correct resolution came up. The problem is - that window is black and empty. I tried looking into Fedora docs but I haven't found anything useful there. I tried google and I found about 487693746874363 solutions and different ways of installing and configuring VNC server. I tried a few - none helped.

I wonder if there is a decent and consistent documentation about how to make remote desktop working in Fedora without having a real pain in the ass trying out those gazillion tweaks and tricks from various forums and blogs? After all Fedora 14 comes with that Remove Desktop thing available out of the box. Is it a real working thing or just a marketing Should I uninstall all the preinstalled VNC stuff and follow one of those painful instructions found on the internet from A to Z praying for it to eventually start working after all the magic is done and hours or days are wasted?

Slackware :: Automated Remote Backup Of Laptop Using RSnapshot?

May 25, 2010

I have a machine on my network and that machine is a mass storage server that I will eventually use as a media server (to stream movies, videoclips and music on my home theater system). I use slackware 13 on ALL of my machines.

I am trying to automate the backup of the "/home" folder of my laptop onto the mass storage server. I currently use rsnapshot and it works great, but I would like to automate the whole process, even if I am not home or in front of my machines...

Here's what I imagined (in pseudo code):

1) Poll if server is active (up);
1.1) If not:
1.1.1) Wake up the server (WOL);
1.1.2) Wait for the server to boot;
1.1.3) Confirm the server has made it to the login prompt (normal boot);
1.1.3.1) If not, send an alarm via email;

Fedora :: Remote Desktop Viewer Is Not Working?

Mar 23, 2010

I have a local network in which are two boxes. The first one has Fedora 8 installed and updated regularly and runs an Apache2 webserver. It also has vnc-server activated.

The second one had Fedora 10 installed along with a vnc viewer so that I could access the first box from this one. The first box has the VNC host name of 192.168.1.67:5.

I had had no problem with this VNC setup until I replaced Fedora 10 with Fedora 12. Initially I was happy to find Remote Desktop Viewer had been installed as part of default installation ( Application > Internet ). But it did not take too long before I got disappointed that this thing failed to work.

No sooner had I connected to the remote box than Fedora 12 kills X-server and logs out displaying a login screen. It seems as if I had killed X-server by issuing a keystroke of CTL-ALT-Backspace, which has apparently been disabled in Fedora 12.

Edit: By the way, I am still able to connect to the Fedora 8 box from a Windows Vista box via TightVnc viewer.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.10 And Lirc Remote Not Working?

Feb 1, 2011

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 and am trying to get lirc to recognize my pcusa mce remote control. I have been working on this for a week and have not had any success. Please note that I am very new to Linux. I am comfortable moving around in the terminal but most of anything else that I do in the terminal is just following instructions.

This is the remote that I am using:

[URL]

When I run

cat /proc/bus/input/devices

I do not see anything that could be the remote. I have tried plugging the USB receiver into my Ubuntu 10.10 net book but it doesn't see the receiver either. I do not have a windows machine that I can test the remote on but I plugged the receiver into my iMac and I did get a red LED lit that I haven't seen on the Ubuntu machines.

When I run irw and press buttons on the remote I see nothing on the terminal.

When I run:

sudo mode2

I get:

mode2: could not get file information for /dev/lirc
mode2: default_init(): No such file or directory

I have tried mode2 both with lirc running and stopped and I get the same response either way.

I have confirmed that there is no /dev/lirc but there is a lircd in /dev (it's not a directory). Also I had read somewhere that lirc doesn't work under Ubuntu 10.10. Is that the case?

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Desktop Not Working?

Feb 16, 2011

I have a Laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 and a Netbook with Remix 10.04. I'm trying to connect by Remote Desktop from the Laptop to the Netbook. Remote Desktop wasn't installed by default in Remix so I installed it via software centre. I then configured Remote desktop in both machines. When I do Connect on the laptop all I get is a black screen and then it closes with the message "Connection to host was Closed". This happens when I try either VNC or SSH. The other thing that's odd, although both machines are on the same WLAN and I checked "configure networkautomatically to accept connections" on both machines, the Laptop doesn't find the other machine in Remote Desktop. What am I/have I done wrong or have I ommitted something?
