Fedora :: Remote Desktop Viewer Is Not Working?

Mar 23, 2010

I have a local network in which are two boxes. The first one has Fedora 8 installed and updated regularly and runs an Apache2 webserver. It also has vnc-server activated.

The second one had Fedora 10 installed along with a vnc viewer so that I could access the first box from this one. The first box has the VNC host name of 192.168.1.67:5.

I had had no problem with this VNC setup until I replaced Fedora 10 with Fedora 12. Initially I was happy to find Remote Desktop Viewer had been installed as part of default installation ( Application > Internet ). But it did not take too long before I got disappointed that this thing failed to work.

No sooner had I connected to the remote box than Fedora 12 kills X-server and logs out displaying a login screen. It seems as if I had killed X-server by issuing a keystroke of CTL-ALT-Backspace, which has apparently been disabled in Fedora 12.

Edit: By the way, I am still able to connect to the Fedora 8 box from a Windows Vista box via TightVnc viewer.

Ubuntu :: Remote Desktop Viewer Has Stopped Working?

Jun 8, 2010

Remote desktop viewer has stopped working in ubuntu 10.04. When I click on the icon in the top panel. The message Starting Remote Desktop viewer appears in the bottom panel for about 20 seconds and then it disappears and nothing further happens.

Yesterday I disabled ipv6 which greatly speed up thunderbird email and coincidently solved a problem I was having with Google earth not connecting to the server.

I do not know if this is what is now causing the problem with Remote Desktop viewer.

Fedora Networking :: Standard Remote Desktop Viewer To Use RDP Instead Of VNC Protocol?

is it possible in the standard remote desktop viewer in Fedora 14 to use RDP instead of VNC protocol? I know that Ubuntu provides this feature. I already installed tsclient and rdesktop but that didn't help. Before you say I have to use VNC: I know... I am just curious how I can set up RDP to connect to Windows based machines.

Ubuntu Networking :: Use Remote Desktop Viewer To See The Desktop On A Windows XP Machine?

Nov 20, 2010

I have my main box, Ubuntu 10.04lts, and I am trying to use remote desktop viewer to see the desktop on a Windows XP machine. The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. But, I cannot ping the XP box from the Ubuntu box, and Remote Desktop Viewer won't establish a connection to the VNC server I have running on the XP box.

Fedora Networking :: Port 22 - Connection Refused - Can't Use "Remote Desktop Viewer 2.31.4" To Vnc

Mar 1, 2011

Friday night I was working on some networking stuff between my two Fedora 14 boxes. I have my laptop and my desktop. on both machines I have "system-config-firewall 1.2.27" and "iptables" (i believe both come standard on F14?) I kept getting the same message as seen below before realizing perhaps I should check my firewall!

I added a rule for incoming and outgoing traffic on port 22 and was able to get in with no problems at all! however today I can't ssh into anything... I can't use "Remote Desktop Viewer 2.31.4" to vnc into the machine anymore. I can't remember the exact error message at this time, it's something close to "Connection was terminated" or "Unable to connect" I can update this message later.

last night I foolishly uninstalled the system-config-firewall and then uninstalled iptables to see if it was a simple firewall issue.... totally hosed my system <insert smiley!>

After reinstalling and realizing I didn't backup my documents <insert smiley!...again...> I started reinstalling all of my applications. I'm still unable to use ssh and I've tried to ssh my own computer.

Is this possible?

# ssh 127.0.0.1
ssh: connect to host 127.0.0.1 port 22: Connection refused

Fedora :: Where Are Stored PWs For Remote Desktop Viewer Stored?

Oct 20, 2010

I have machine that I used to VNC to on my network with Remote Desktop Viewer from my Fedora 12. When I first connected I checked the checkbox that I wanted to store the pw. Now the pw on the other machine has changed but Remote Desktop Viewer does not ask for a new password, it just gives me a black screen, like I am connected but I can't see anything. I'd like to know if anyone knows where this pw data is stored on the system so I can start fresh. I already tried uninstalling Remote Desktop Viewer and installing it again.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Copy To Clipboard From Remote Desktop Viewer In 10.10

Oct 19, 2010

Just installed 10.10 32-bit on a Lenovo T61p laptop, and used Remote Desktop Viewer (version 2.3.2) to VNC into another system. I can copy from an application on 10.10 and then paste into a window in the VNC connection (e.g. to xterm or emacs), but I cannot do the reverse. When I try to paste, I get garbage displayed. For example, I selected "ls -l" from an xterm, which should have copied to the clipboard. When I paste this into an e-mail message, I get junk.

Here is what Emacs in hexl-mode says about that text:
7852 3109 05 xR1..
It shows as "xR1" some whitespace and then a tiny graphical box symbol with 00 and 05 in it. I'll try to paste it on the next line: Is this a known bug? Is there a workaround? Another app I can use?
xR1
This same VNC connection works fine, when I use 10.04.

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Desktop Viewer Doesn't Work

Sep 18, 2010

I have Lynx, trying to connect to a tightvnc server on a Win7 box on my LAN.

Server IP: 192.168.1.42:5900

The remote desktop window just goes black and pops up a dialog saying connection closed every time. However VNC works fine as I installed xtightvncviewer as an alternative and that connects, and I can view the Win7 desktop and control it and do everything you would expect.

I've also tried connecting using Android VNC viewer from my phone on my LAN and that also works fine so it appears to be an issue with Remote Desktop Viewer.Incidentally using R.D.V. on Intrepid into a tightvnc server on my old XP box worked fine.

Ubuntu :: Default Filesystem Browser Is Remote Desktop Viewer?

Whenever I try to open a folder or some other location on disk through any program, I get the Remote Desktop Viewer. For example, if I go to Places --> Home Folder, the RDV opens up and says "the connection to /home/<me>" is closed. It's very odd. I get the same behavior in Chromium if I select "Show in Folder" for a download.

If I go to the terminal and type 'xdg-open ~' or 'gnome-open ~' I also get the Remote Desktop Viewer, just like I do when I select home from the Places menu.

Ubuntu Networking :: What Is Syntax For SSH Tunnel Host In Remote Desktop Viewer?

Aug 1, 2011

I have succeeded in using Remote Desktop Viewer to make a VNC connection to a remote WAN computer and it was quick enough to manipulate the remote computer in real time.I found the host name by getting the remote target computer to put the following url into a browser - http://www.showmyip.com/ - It returned the address for the router which I put into the Host: text entry box in the Remote Desktop Viewer window. E.g. for my computer at the time of submitting my enquiry the address was 'host81-129-54-226.range81-129.btcentralplus.com'.The remote router that I connected to needed to have the port 5900 forwarded to the remote target computer.I now want to progress to running VNC through a SSH tunnel for additional security. In the Remote Desktop Viewer there is a configuration line

'use host' <text box to enter host name> 'as a SSH tunnel'.What is the correct syntax to enter in the text box? It would help my understanding if you used the example address above as a basis for a response. Many unexpected connection attempts reported on my router, if that was you, thank you for the novel way in responding to the question and providing the syntax. The 'bible' on syntax appears to be found here:- http://unixhelp.ed.ac.uk/CGI/man-cgi?ssh+1

Fedora :: Make Pulseaudio Working In A Remote Desktop?

Nov 14, 2009

I have a PC installed with Fedora 11 and I want to use this machine headless as a music server, my amplifier is connected to this machine. After a normal installation I've changed the default runlevel from 5 to 3. I can connect from a client, using FreeNX, to this machine and I get a normal Gnome desktop. So far so good.

The problem is there is no sound. But when I log into the machine directly, still in runlevel 3 and execute the script /usr/bin/start-pulseaudio-x11 an make a new remote-desktop connection there is music. Is there a way to make pulseaudio working in a remote desktop.

I tried to find a way to reinstall the remote desktop application on ubuntu, but I cannot find what its name is and reinstalling vncserver did not help.

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Desktop Not Working?

Feb 16, 2011

I have a Laptop with Ubuntu 10.04 and a Netbook with Remix 10.04. I'm trying to connect by Remote Desktop from the Laptop to the Netbook. Remote Desktop wasn't installed by default in Remix so I installed it via software centre. I then configured Remote desktop in both machines. When I do Connect on the laptop all I get is a black screen and then it closes with the message "Connection to host was Closed". This happens when I try either VNC or SSH. The other thing that's odd, although both machines are on the same WLAN and I checked "configure networkautomatically to accept connections" on both machines, the Laptop doesn't find the other machine in Remote Desktop. What am I/have I done wrong or have I ommitted something?

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Desktop Stopped Working ?

Mar 8, 2011

I have a remote desktop app for my ipod that i use every now and then, but after about a week and a half of not using remote desktop on either my ipod or my computer, it seems to have stopped working. the problem is with my computer rather than my ipod. when i go to menu>system>preferences>remote desktop, the area where it is supposed to give you the ip address, or whatever it is to connect remotely, is no longer a number, but just the word "localhost". i only saw this after my ipod told me it could not find the host, so i checked and thats when i saw localhost. putting that into the remote desktop app did nothing, so i tried my ip address and that didnt work either. clicking on "localhost" brings up evolution mail which wants me to send it as an email, strangely. not sure whats going on here.

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Desktop Server Not Working After 11.04 Upgrade With Confirmation Enabled

May 4, 2011

I just remotely updated my uncle's Ubuntu 10.10 desktop to 11.04. My uncle has no computer skills, so it is very important that I troubleshoot his problems using VNC. After completing the 11.04 upgrade, I was not able to connect to him via VNC. After some fiddling around I was able to connect by turning off the confirmation option in the Security section. We are now using the password security option. The problem is that my uncle does not have any security against my peering eyes.

I tried reinstalling Vinagre, but that didn't help. Is it possible to get the confirmation option working again somehow?

Is there a download link for Vinagre 3.01 (deb)?

I looked in hosts.allow and hosts.deny, no entries there. The vino server is running. There is nothing in /varlog/messages, dmesg or /var/log/secure, at least nothing I could find related to vino. What else can I check? The conf file in my home folder looks exactly like one on another machine where it is working. forgot to add the message I get when I try it from a remote machine is "The connection to host 192.168.1.100 was closed". So it appears something is actively rejecting the login.
