Mar 25, 2010I have zone several LTO2 & LTO4 drives to a Redhat 3 server. What are the configurations required to be done on Redhat 3 in order to detect the FC tape devices?

Feb 22, 2011I just got OpenSuSe 11.3 installed in a machine with two 160GB drives. I took all defaults at installation, works fine. Going to YaST expecting to detect and partition it. Not there. System Information, however 'sees' both disks. How do I partition and attach this disk?

Apr 30, 2010I'm trying to make a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 on my system. I have 9.10 correctly setup on what I see here as devsda2. devsda3 does contain /home. devsda1 is for Vista. They are on a 500Gb hard drive. I also have a second 500Gb hard drive, formerly on a raid 0 with the first one, but now independent (raid deactivated from bios). It is here know as /dev/sdb, and contains other 3 partitions. Raid 0 is not hardware, but is an intel fake raid.
I then have other 4 drives, causing me NO problem.
I start live mode of Ubuntu 10.04 with noraid option. When I try to setup Ubuntu, during the process, where it comes to manually select partitions, the two 500Gb hard drives disappears, such that I'm not able to install Ubuntu on what now is /dev/sda2
If I start live mode of Ubuntu without noraid option, I will see the two 500Gb hd as being part of a raid 0, such that I can't use them.
The other 4 hd normally appear in both cases.
Server :: Enabling Encryption On LTO4 Tape Drive?
Oct 22, 2010I didn't know if I should have posted this in newbie, hardware, or server. I haven't used tape drives in Linux previously; however I'm trying to figure out how to enable an LTO-4 tape drives built in encryption. Im not that concerned with secure key management, I am looking to just being able to load a key into the drive and get the tape to encrypt. Im for a simple command, but I dont even know where to start. If it varies by device, its an HP Ultrium 4 (1760).

Jan 11, 2011I had Windows XP working. I then put in a new hard disk and installed Redhat 5 on it. rom then i could only boot into Redhat. Further, everyting is very slow. Anothe rproblem is that Redhat does not see my netwrok so I cannot get onto the Internet. I need to have the choice of booting into XP or Redhat.

Jan 18, 2010I'm breaking into the OS drive side with RAID-1 now. I have my server set up with a pair of 80 GB drives, mirrored (RAID-1) and have been testing the fail-over and rebuild process. Works great physically failing out either drive. Great! My next quest is setting up a backup procedure for the OS drives, and I want to know how others are doing this.
Here's what I was thinking, and I'd love some feedback: Fail one of the disks out of the RAID-1, then image it to a file, saved on an external disk, using the dd command (if memory serves, it would be something like "sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=backupfilename.img") Then, re-add the failed disk back into the array. In the event I needed to roll back to one of those snapshots, I would just use the "dd" command to dump the image back on to an appropriate hard disk, boot to it, and rebuild the RAID-1 from that.
Does that sound like a good practice, or is there a better way? A couple notes: I do not have the luxury of a stack of extra disks, so I cannot just do the standard mirror breaks and keep the disks on-hand, and using something like a tape drive is also not an option.

Mar 26, 2011I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data

Jan 8, 2010So, at the moment I have a 7TB LVM with 1 group and one logical volume. In all honesty I don't back up this information. It is filled with data that I can "afford" to lose, but... would rather not. How do LVMs fail? If I lose a 1.5TB drive that is part of the LVM does that mean at most I could lose 1.5TB of data? Or can files span more than one drive? if so, would it just be one file what would span two drives? or could there be many files that span multiple drives drives? Essentially. I'm just curious, in a general, in a high level sense about LVM safety. What are the risks that are involved?
Edit: what happens if I boot up the computer with a drive missing from the lvm? Is there a first primary drive?
Fedora :: Can't Access Any Of The Other Hard Drives From The Other Drives?

In Rhythmbox, I used to get an icon for the cd which I could click on to play the cd but that doesn't come up any more. I have my File Management Preferences set to ask me what to do when I insert a cd but it no longer asks me what to do. Banshee is the only thing left that shows a cd icon. I installed Lenny on LVM on top of RAID 1.
My system looks like this:
I just added two 1.5 TB drives in raid 1 to the logical volume group home 100% added to /home /dev/md3
I went to reinstall the system from the lenny disc and now the installer does not recognize the LVM. It did recognize the LVM before I added md3 to the LVM.
During the partition editor, if i go to a terminal (by going to another window/console) and give the command vgdisplay it says that physical volume with UUID V0S1Yx-361r-NZaE-w1Fy-kCFQ-9MmH-g287vh cannot be found. You will see below that the UUID refers to /dev/md3 (the added 1.5 raid 1 array)
Below is the output of "pvdisplay" and "mdadm --detail /dev/md3"
I don't know if this has to do with it but /dev/md3 is the only array that says local to host yield [yield is my hostname] next to its UUID after the mdadm --detail command.
Ubuntu :: USB Modem Not Detecting?
Dec 4, 2009In my laptop, ealier in XP OS whenever I was connecting USB Modem, it was giving message "Power surge on USB Hub Port". Now, I have put new hard disk with a single partition and installed Ubuntu 9.04 on it. After installation, it was detecting USB for a day or two and I/net was working fine. But now the system is not detecting USB Modem et al. Is it because of some hardware problem or is there anything that I can check into Ubuntu?

Aug 10, 2010Well I have this really shweet Samson C01U usb studio condenser mic. When it is plugged in before I boot my machine, everything works like a charm, and I can sound like a rockstar recording my stuffs in UbuntuStudio 10.04 x64.But when I'm not being a rockstar, I'm using my normal Lucid distro to go about my everyday tasks. So when I decide to call someone on skype, I plug the mic in, and nothing happens. The sound config window does not show the device? I do not want to reboot every time to use the mic (and that's all that works), and I do not want to leave it standing on my desk either.
