Hardware :: Not Detecting CD Or DVD Media ?
Mar 7, 2010I have HP Pavillion dv67000 using fedora 9. Since last many days, DVD-ROM is unable to detect any media (CD or DVD). Because I rarely need using CD or DVD.

View 11 RepliesI was trying to change the mounting point of a usb external drive from '/media/disk' to '/media/Movies'
Here is were the stupid part takes over... I right clicked on the desktop icon for the device and selected Properties. From there I selected the Volume tab and in there I changed the mounting point to '/media/Movies' It accepted it and said the changed would take place when I unmounted it and remounted it. However, when I did this it now says it cannot be mounted as it says mount_point contains invalid characters usually /
Unfortunately, now I cannot get back into the properties to remove my error.
I recently put Linux back on my laptop (Vector) and I am trying to get any of the media players on it to recognize and play the music on my desktop, which is running Windows 7 Ultimate with WMP streaming music over my wireless network. I was wondering if this can be done, or if these features have yet, if ever, to be implemented.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just bought a new hard drive so that I could convert my XP-only machine into an XP-Ubuntu-Windows 7 triple boot machine.Since the drive is absurdly huge (1 TB) I wouldn't mind throwing ReactOS into the mixtoo.I just found out that master boot records are limited to 4 entries, meaning 4 primary partitions. I had Windows XP set up on my old drive as a boot partition, a program files partition and a media partition. Since I really didn't want to install XP from scratch, I cloned this setup on my new drive.
This leaves me one MBR partition entry for installing Windows 7, Ubuntu and ReactOS. I'd like to avoid having to install XP from scratch like the plague, partly because it's supposed to be a safety net in case things go wrong with my other OS's and because I've invested a lot of time getting it set up exactly the way I like it.Here are the options I've considered and why I don't like them:Install Windows 7 on my media partition. This would work, but I prefer to keep my media partition completely separate from any OS, so that I can reformat an OS partition without affecting my media partition at all.
Use wubi or something to install Ubuntu in the same partition as something else. Again, this is brittle.Move all my media to a logical drive on an extended partition. Create another logical drive on this extended partition for Ubuntu. The problem here is that extended partitions are rather brittle--if you nuke one, it renders the rest useless.Just put the old drive back in my computer and run XP off it. Use the new one for the other OS's. The problem here is that the old drive is slower and uses extra power, generates extra heat, etc.
I have an NTFS volume on my system which I regularly access from within Ubuntu 9.10, mostly to play the plethora of DVD images (*.iso files) stored there. I use VLC Media Player to watch the content. For some reason, VLC's file browser only shows a small subset of the files by default. I have to select "All Files" instead of "Media Files" to see all the *.iso's.
What's this about? Since they're all the same type of file, I don't understand why some would be viewed as "media files" but others not. If the files were on a Linux-type filesystem (ext3 etc.) I would guess it had something to do with permissions, but I'm not sure how file ownership & permissions apply to a mounted NTFS volume.
When I insert a cd into my optical drive, it is not showing up on my file menu. In Rhythmbox, I used to get an icon for the cd which I could click on to play the cd but that doesn't come up any more. I have my File Management Preferences set to ask me what to do when I insert a cd but it no longer asks me what to do. Banshee is the only thing left that shows a cd icon. How do I get my file management system and other programs to recognize a cd when inserted?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 via Wubi (Dual-boot with Win 7; everything went smoothly; was able to install Nvidia drivers, various packages and everything went silky smooth overall. This morning I attempted to log-in to my Profile (on Ubuntu) and I found that my Keyboard would not respond; I attempted to unplug and replug the keyboard back in, restart the computer, everything; yet it will not detect my keyboard.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble getting the debian installer to detect an existing LVM
I installed Lenny on LVM on top of RAID 1.
My system looks like this:
I just added two 1.5 TB drives in raid 1 to the logical volume group home 100% added to /home /dev/md3
I went to reinstall the system from the lenny disc and now the installer does not recognize the LVM. It did recognize the LVM before I added md3 to the LVM.
During the partition editor, if i go to a terminal (by going to another window/console) and give the command vgdisplay it says that physical volume with UUID V0S1Yx-361r-NZaE-w1Fy-kCFQ-9MmH-g287vh cannot be found. You will see below that the UUID refers to /dev/md3 (the added 1.5 raid 1 array)
Below is the output of "pvdisplay" and "mdadm --detail /dev/md3"
I don't know if this has to do with it but /dev/md3 is the only array that says local to host yield [yield is my hostname] next to its UUID after the mdadm --detail command.
In my laptop, ealier in XP OS whenever I was connecting USB Modem, it was giving message "Power surge on USB Hub Port". Now, I have put new hard disk with a single partition and installed Ubuntu 9.04 on it. After installation, it was detecting USB for a day or two and I/net was working fine. But now the system is not detecting USB Modem et al. Is it because of some hardware problem or is there anything that I can check into Ubuntu?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen in an SSH session I modify my command prompt by appending (ssh) to the command prompt string. Works nicely to remind me I'm in an SSH session.I also modify the prompt command by inserting the host name, but the (ssh) string really helps.Works nicely until I run the su - {username} command. Using the "-" option ignores the original SSH environment variables that are created.Of course, when not using the "-" option then the original SSH environment variables are preserved.Any ideas how I can determine I am in an SSH session to modify the command prompt after using the "-" option?
View 7 Replies View RelatedWell I have this really shweet Samson C01U usb studio condenser mic. When it is plugged in before I boot my machine, everything works like a charm, and I can sound like a rockstar recording my stuffs in UbuntuStudio 10.04 x64.But when I'm not being a rockstar, I'm using my normal Lucid distro to go about my everyday tasks. So when I decide to call someone on skype, I plug the mic in, and nothing happens. The sound config window does not show the device? I do not want to reboot every time to use the mic (and that's all that works), and I do not want to leave it standing on my desk either.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy name is Shim and currently im using Ubuntu 10.4 LTS well currently i've been facing an irritating problem it actually also happened in my previous ubuntu version, well the problem that i've been having is that my system doesn't detect any USBs or external HDs attached to it. I have check around already but still couldnt find any solution to this problem, but i noticed that in other forums they would post their results using the command "dmesg" well here is mine:
Code:
[ 0.182802] vgaarb: device added: PCI:0000:01:00.0,decodes=io+mem,owns=io+mem,locks=none
[ 0.182805] vgaarb: loaded

I just noticed that USB devices aren't being detected by kde when i plug them in. they work fine in gnome and the kernel detects them properly (seen via dmesg) but they're not being seen in kde.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have Fedora 12 installed and fully updated. For some reason my printer is not detected by the system. The printer is an HP932C Deskjet connected via parallel port, vanilla stuff.
Other current distros (openSUSE, Ubuntu, Scientific Linux) are also installed and locate the printer with no problem.
Per the info listed on the "Common Fedora Bugs" page I installed the foomatic package. Also, ran yum update system-config-printer which reported this package was installed and up to date (system-config-printer-1.1.18-2.fc12 (i686)).
When I go to System -> Preferences -> Default Printer no printer is displayed in the window. Clicking on the Printer or Location buttons lists nothing.
how to get the printer detected/working?
Since i upgraded to F14 I have been having an annoying problem with compiz: I have twinview and an nvidia 8800GTS. Windows like transmission and pidgin that i put on my second monitor and then hide, have their position reset to the center left side of the screen on the absolute border of the first monitor. this is probably a problem with how compiz is detecting the outputs.
EDIT: Any windows that have their position saved to the second screen will be reset to hug the center left side of the screen.
SOLVED: I manually set the outputs in compiz and the selected use largest output first in Place Windows plugin.
I have just installed Fedora 14. But my boot loader is not detecting Windows 7, Ubuntu and Debian which I have installed in other partions..

I'm trying to get my friend's laptop(acer travelmate 2200) to connect to his wireless network. I just installed a new hard drive and installed a dual boot windows xp/ Ubuntu 9.04 setup.
His laptop still connects fine with the old hard drive with windows XP installed, so I know the hardware is working.
When I click on the network manager , however, I don't see anything. Normally , I'd just hit the network manager and I'd see the available connections , but on this laptop I'm not detecting any.
The only thing I can think of , is that Ubuntu doesn't have the proper drivers needed for the wireless card in the laptop. But I don't know how to go about checking this since whenever I've done this before it's always just worked automatically.
Obviously I can't install to it if I can't select it from the drop down menu. Not that it really matters, but this happens with both 64 and 32 bit versions, clean disc, no errors. I've also tried xubuntu 32-bit.
I can install Slackware on it, or for all I know every other OS. I can find it with cfdisk, fdisk, gparted, etc. I can format it in windows and use it as a drive If I try to install ubuntu from windows on it once I boot into ubuntu to finish the install it goes in an infinite loop of something like 'no root filesystem please reconfigure (or something like that), hit ok, repeates the message until I get tired of hitting ok and reboot. Always lists it under places as '500gb filesystem' even if there are no assigned partitions on it. I've rebuilt the partition table with fdisk analyzed it with disktest (drivetest? something test or testsomething) I've considered giving up and using another distro...

I turned it off, then checked the card hadnt been knocked out. It did appear to be, so i put it back in properly, and it still wont detect the card. (its basically a pcie card with an antenna sticking out the back).
