Apr 14, 2011Tonight I installed ubuntu 10.10 (32 bit) on an external usb harddrive with a dvd I burned and I used my older desktop. I disconnected all internal and external drives first so everything had to be put on the usb drive I selected (only option available). I used the option to load extra software, use the entire hard drive, and let the software do it's thing. I basically had no options where to put things and it didn't have much choice.
When I boot the usb drive on my laptop (win 7 64 bit) by telling the bios to boot to it first... I get an error: modprobe: FATAL Could not load /lib/modules 2.6.35-22 generic modules No such file or directory. This message appears twice and then it does boot into ubuntu and seems to work fine. I'm new to this OS so that is an uneducated guess but the things I have done seem to be working. So exactly what is this error referring too? Is there a way to fix the problem or do I just ignore it.
Ubuntu :: Lock All ALSA Packages And Modules To Version 1.0.23?
Jan 30, 2011I am using 10.04 but i need alsa to be upgraded to 1.0.23 in order for the sound to work. every once in a while when there is a system update alsa gets overwritten and goes back to 1.0.22 which makes the computer unusable. i already locked the alsa packages and it worked now for some time. but today i got another update that did the same thing. the only solution is to do full alsa upragade again. is there really no other way? which packages do i need to lock to keep alsa at 1.0.23? i don't want to move to 10.10 as i planned to stay with LTS. but if there is no other way... funny how debian chose to use 1.0.23 for their next stable edition, while ubuntu LTS stays with 1.0.22 despite it not working on many newer cards. especiall intel ones it seems.

I want to have a separate script that will unload the modules loaded in this script. However, the pacmd unload-module only accepts the index number, not the name. I have no way of knowing what the index numbers will be as they change each time, so I've got stuck writing the script.

Oct 10, 2010I am attempting to install the Linuxant ALSA driver to make my sound work properly (speakers muting when headphones plugged in). This worked on Lucid, but on Maverick the installation fails at the "building modules" stage. It directs me to a logfile, which I have reproduced here:

Jul 20, 2010Firefox won't load. On clicking the icon in the plasma box the bouncing loading icon appears but after about 30 secs it disappears and nothing further happens.
I am running Suse 11.1. Not sure of the original version of FF! I have tried deleting it in Yast and reinstalling the latest version with the same result. It certainly used to work but as the machine is primarily a mail server, FF is not used much.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Won't Load NY Times Pages / Solution For This?
Oct 23, 2010I have an odd problem loading certain webpages (not all) from the New York Times in Firefox.
If I try to load this for instance:http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/1...-shoes-or-not/
the page will not load and I see the text "Waiting for graphics8.nytimes.com..." in the status bar.
I did a complete reinstallation of Firefox and it worked fine (yesterday). Today the problem is back again.
I tried the page on a friend's computer also running Firefox in Ubuntu and it worked fine.
I tried it in Windows Firefox and it worked fine.
I have the same add-ons/extensions in Windows as I have in Ubuntu and, in any case, I have removed them all once and tried the page with the same non-result. I also noted that the same thing happens if I try to load the page in Google Chrome in Ubuntu.

May 15, 2010On my laptop I have a dual boot of Vista and Ubuntu (Karmic Koala). I have 3 Vista partitions and 1 Ubuntu partition (well, two if you include the swap disk). Recently I had started to notice that when trying to boot into Ubuntu, it simply wouldn't. It would have a screen with lots of text which would every few seconds refresh yet it never really looked any different, although I'd be unable to tell. I'd leave it there for several minutes and nothing would happen.
I wasn't worried for a while because I only used Ubuntu for some scientific work over the summer and I haven't needed it for a while but now I desperately need those files. I've tried three programs that apparently make Linux partitions accessible in windows but I've been succesful with none of them. I'm now seriously worrying that there has been a harddrive error of sorts...but then I only have one physical harddrive on my laptop and my windows partitions are working okay. I found my Karmic DVD and I tried to run "run Ubuntu without changing your system" but that wouldn't load after ages

Jul 7, 2015After a hiatus I found my machine to be down, but upon turning it on I get significant errors and dropped into emergency mode (see below). This machine wasn't very up-to-date to begin with, so I'm having difficulty determining the order in which to proceed. A couple naive checks and updates on my part are not working. The file system appears to be intact enough to "cd" around and "ls" to see that my files are all (seemingly) there. But the kernel modules aren't loading which is, you know, a problem.
The state I find it in is that it will begin booting to Linux 3.2 (which I know is no longer supported in testing, see below where I tried to update to 3.16), but fails quickly and puts me into emergency mode

Running "journalctl -xb" shows that it can't mount the module even though it's there on the disk:

I tried updating via apt to the Linux 3.16.0 kernel, but grub wasn't finding it in a way that effects the boot process, and no appropriate "vmlinuz-" file appears with the others on the boot partition. So, I tried switching to grub2 but the update-grub command produces many errors.... For now, grub2 still (attempts to) load the old kernel (3.2) with the same results as I was getting with the old grub-legacy.
Regarding the module-loading features, running "lsmod" shows about 30 lines:

...I'm at the limit of what I know to check and/or try.
Ubuntu Installation :: How To Load Additional Modules (Server)
Sep 17, 2010I've been playing with some intel server board and they provide a type of fakeraid which is called Embedded Server Raid Technology 2. Since Intel officially support RHEL and SLES on their servers, they provide drivers/modules for this fake raid (which supports raid 0, 1, 5 and 10). I have installed RHEL before on these severs and redhat's installer has the ability to load additional modules (via a boot command linux dd).
While intel doesn't provide the modules for other operating systems, they provide a library where people can build their own module for their kernel. I managed to build this module called 'megasr' (for now I've built it for kernel 2.6.32-24-generic which is my testbed at the moment but I would eventually build it for box i386 and amd64 for both server and desktop versions) and load it on a system which is installed on a single drive.
We are able to load it successfully and see the raid 5 as a single volume and access it (partition, format and copy data to it) and all its functions (work in degraded mode, rebuild, etc) work fine but my main goal is to actually install such volume as my main boot volume (similar to how its possible with RHEL or SLES). Is this possible? Load additional modules during the installation that will be present after the installation is finished?

Nov 30, 2010My apache and wordpress were running fine till this morning. I ran updates via webmin,though I wasn't sure what those updates were for.
Then when I tried to access mysite.com, index.php downloads instead of opening.
I tried some troubleshooting and followed a form where it was advised to enable mod php5, so I did a2enmod php5 and tried to restart apache. Since I get this error Cannot load /usr/lib/apache2/modules/libphp5.so into server.

Ubuntu Installation :: Load The Same Modules In The Upgraded 9.04 As Are Loaded By The Live CD?
May 5, 2010I was using v 8.10. It came to its end of life and I felt compelled to upgrade. I upgraded to v 9.04. All seemed well, but then I discovered that I had no sound. As a test, I booted up with the v 9.04 CD, using it as a live CD. I had sound, so it seems as though it should be possible for me to have sound from my upgraded v 9.04 too, provided I can make the necessary changes to it.
When using the live CD and opening the volume control, I get as the listed device "HDA ATI SB (Alsa mixer)". That doesn't appear when I open the volume control using my upgraded v 9.04. Instead, it says "Playback: Null Output (PulseAudio mixer)". Also, when I check for loaded modules when using the live CD, I get many with snd in their name, but nary a one when using the upgraded 9.04.
Is there some simple way for me to load the same modules in the upgraded 9.04 as are loaded by the live CD? I tried to figure out the answer to this by reading other threads, but was simply overwhelmed by the volume of material and often wasn't sure to which version of Ubuntu it applied.

Jun 8, 2011I have a Realtek WN511b wireless card with a BM4321 chip.
It runs on the wl driver but when I boot the system the card won't install.
With help (I am noob) we have figured out that the ssb and the b43 drivers are installing even though I have them blacklisted. I have seen similar problems described elsewhere but no real fixes.
I can boot the system (Dell d630) then pop the card out and re-insert, enter password and it connects no problem.
It would be nice if it simply installed on boot.
Wondering if anyone had a solution?
Slackware :: ALSA - Sound Will Cut In And Out
Oct 11, 2010basically, sound will cut in and out. if i'm on videos, whenever sound cuts out, the video will continue for exactly two seconds and stop. sometimes i can reload the videos video, and it'll either play for two seconds without sound, or go normal, but usually for only a little time, not even a minute. similar problems for amarok, spotify and other applications using the sound card. this is the output when trying to restart the alsa demon

Fedora :: Alsa - Getting Sound To Work ?
Dec 29, 2010I am having problems getting sound to work. I have pasted my output from AlsaInfo.sh in hopes that someone can assist me. I have been able to fix this with the AlsaCompile scripts for Ubuntu. I am wondering if this is a distro related issue. If not I will gladly send to the alsa project.

Ubuntu :: No Sound After ALSA 1.0.24 Upgrade
Mar 16, 2011I am using linux mint 9 with kernel 2.6.32.29. I upgraded from alsa 1.0.23 to 1.0.24 using the alsa upgrade script. Sound was working just fine before on my Asus Xonar DS, However, my nvidia geforce 430's hdmi audio card is not recognized in 1.0.23 but it is in 1.0.24. Though the card is detected, I have no sound on either cards now.

Oct 19, 2010when i plug in my headphones i was getting sound output both from the laptop speakers and the headphones, then i tried changing the sound.conf file and still no success and then i tried reinstalling the alsa - i downloaded the latest alsa-driver and alsa-lib and installed them, but when i rebooted there was no more sound from the headphones when i plug them in. I don't know what to do, i tried reinstalling alsa multiple times but still no success. Is there any way to bring back my previous configuration when i installed slackware ? Or some way to roll back using the installation dvd ?
