I have a laptop that I was dual booting with Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I used the MSFT disk manager to delete the partitions. I made sure my windows live cd was working, which it was, before doing this. But now, when I boot my computer, it won't run the cd. All I get is
error: no such partition. and then a command prompt: grub rescue>
I made sure my boot priority was set to boot from the CD first.
I recently bought a Buffalo 500GB ministation usb with "optional disk encryption". Turns out, I'm having one hell of a time trying to remove the "optional" from the drive. I figured I could just delete the program that is on the disk, and go on my way. That doesn't seem to be the case.
fdisk /dev/sdc1, then "p" showed that there were 4 partitions. So I deleted them one by one. "n" gave me a new partition. "t" I used 87 because I will be using it on windows. Then "w" to write everything.
mkfs -t ntfs /dev/sdc1 - all went well.
fsck -f -y /dev/sdc1 - all went well
Then I took the removed the drive and plugged into Windows only to find that the "optional" is still there. It actually creates a virtual drive with the "optional" software. So I tried it over again. I tried fdisk only to see that the partitions were back (as if they were never removed). I removed them again, and used primary partition as linux and wrote to disk. As a hunch, I checked permissions. Can't remember what it said, but I did change them.
chmod 777 /dev/sdc1
Then in a last hope of desperation, before coming to work today, I decided to dd the drive.
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc1 bs=4k conv=notrunc
Is it possible that the "optional" stuff is actually hard coded onto a chip, or something inside the drive and I may never get rid of it?
I have a Huawei IDEOS S7 android tablet running 2.1.My USB port has died, so I need to delete a partition I put on the internal memory area, then resize the remaining partition back to the full amount. It looks like I should be able to use terminal emulator to do that, but I don't know any of the commands.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I was installing Ubuntu onto my laptop, I probably did a mistake partitioning the hard drive by selecting align to: nothing, because I didn't want to have unallocated spaces between partitions. However, this resulted in partitions' misalignment as no one partition in the extended one (including the one that is extended) doesn't start on a physical sector boundary. As I already have much data on the HDD and I don't have another one that big, it is impossible for me to erase existing partitions and then copy the data back. So, is there please a way to get the partitions aligned properly without deleting them?

I am currently running a dual boot machine with Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows Vista.Is there any way I can delete the Linux partition and Grub boot loader without affecting the Windows partition at all?I would also like to be able to repartition all of the space that was previously occupied by Linux.

I want to delete the first two partitions (a 243 MB Linux swap partition and a 5.87 GB root partition). Problem is, every time I deleted them, Windows would also delete Drive G: and H:, leaving only drive F: intact. Deleting the two Linux partitions using GParted from a Live CD also gave the same result. I've attempted this multiple times now and, after each attempt, TestDisk always managed to recover all the deleted partitions.
Any ideas on how to delete these two partitions without affecting the rest?
I have a 230GB hard drive wich I don't know it's name.I have a 207GB windows vista partition and the rest of it is for linux (Ubuntu).Today I decided giving it all space to Ubuntu Linux ,but didn't want to lose all my data from the windows partition.I thought that by deleting all things except the folder with my data and leaving enough space to shrink and make enough room for another partition to put my data folder.The logic is that i could then format that partition wich previously was windows and use it all for ubuntu without losing data.After having ubuntu installed i could copy my data folder to /home and then delete the previous partition and make /home bigger.The problem is that after i freed the space,when using Gparted to shrink it says that the partition has bad sectors or the filesystem has problems and so it can't do some operations.
What could have went wrong?It told me to do chkdisk but as i deleted all the windows files and i can't boot into it anymore.I used the vista dvd to do that.I rebooted 2 times as it says and after that when trying again nothing changed.I tried to use ntfsresize with the --bad-sectors argument and also the -f argument but it's useless.At the end it says it won't do anything until the ntfs filesystem get repaired.Or it says it is too risky to continueIs there any way i could do some superforce command to resize it without losing data?Please don't tell me to put it on an external storage cause i have like 70GB of datas to save...no i don't have an external hardrive
I am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?

I am having a problem that I have to keep 2 ntfs partitions intact will deleting the partition that has windows. Now everything goes well, opensuse installs but the problem is that I cannot give user full rights to ntfs folders. I have used graphical file permission methods n terminal chown n chmod methos but still permissions revert back to root.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to install Linux as a dual boot with Windows 7 on my Dell latitude e6510.It is currently running Windows 7 and I have used the MS disk tools to shrink the Win 7 NTFS partition to make room for Linux.The issue I'm having is that when I run Linux installers by boot from CD they see the entire hard drive as unallocated space. I have tried Ubuntu 10.10, Kbuntu 10.10 and Fedora 14 and they all have the same problem.I have also tried the Ubuntu "install in Windows" option and could not get it to work.EDIT:Booting Gparted 0.8.0 from a usb drive did not work. It reported the entire drive as unpartitioned.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to DL the version of DOS-box I prefer to C:, but I made both the Win-lose partitions RO when I first installed / (call me crazy, but I was paranoid it might mess with an already broken install from nearly a decade ago with an OS that-shall-remain-nameless that's even older). Incidentally, I have learned from shenanigans with Linux-drivers from nVidia that /home partition is definitely a good idea (another post for another time)...
Anyway: even though I specifically made sure I turned the RO flag off but definitely made both Win' part's "usable" in the Installer from the NETINST live-CD. I had to format because GParted ("Partition Editor" under System -> Administration) wouldn't allow me to edit RW/RO thingy... Even when I logged in as / I checked in fstab, but there's no RO flags listed.
. I may be using the word "flag" when I mean something else. When you run the Lenny graphical installer, and choose to manually partition-edit, and then choose to "use" your [I chose] FAT-32 partitions, there's a few setup choices that become available. Including "its mount-point shall be..." and these Extra Choices I'm referring to as flags, that are "RO", "Quiet?" and a third one I can't remember... Time for sleeping!
How to automatically create windows partitions(fat/ntfs) through Linux. I have all the required information for partitions to be created.
For example:
Size
Flag
Partition Type
etc.
I have installed ubuntu on my notebook, and there are 4 partitons in the hdd, all are NTFS, only one is ext4.
the problem is i deleted some hidden folders(in ubuntu which are not hidden, such as recyclebin and file information table folders) in ntfs partitions, now i need to reinstall the windows 7 back, i have a doubt that even windows will ever recognize those partitions again?
I have a 16GB memorystick which used to have a Linux partition. It therefore has two partitions; 2GB FAT32 and 14GB linux boot drive. The linux part stopped working, so I decided to reinstall it. But windows can't see that partition. I tried formatting the whole disk, but I can only format one partition (the FAT32). There seems to be no way to combine the two partitions into one big one, and there seems to be no way for windows to partition the large part of the memorystick to but Linux on it. In the windows partition manager, windows sees the large unused partition, and it let me delete it. But once I have deleted it, I'm not allowed to format it. Also I cannot delete or resize the small partition. I have a memorystick with two partitons. Windows only sees one of them, and won't let me use the other one. I would like to combine the two partitions so I can install Linux on the memory stick again.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Centos 5.5 system that had 2 primary partitions (2nd is setup as LVM with multiple LVM partitions) and then installed Windows 7 as Dual Boot.
However, Windows 7 has installed a 200MB system partition which is GPT/EFI as partition 3 and the Win7 OS as a Primary Partition.
I have a heap of space undefined after this fourth primary partition.
However, as 4 primary partitions have been used, I can no longer create an extended partition to utilise this.
As such I would like to know what is the best and safest way to proceed, and if possible step by steps instructions for the best option eg:
1. Delete the Windows 7 System Partition and create the extended partition (I expect this will prevent Windows from booting)
2. Use something like partition magic to change the Win 7 OS Partition 4 to an extended partition (Not sure if this will work)
3. Make changes to the overall system including both Linux and Windows so that it will use GPT only (I have
had no experience with GPT so this is a bit scary)
4. Other?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a windows box running w2003 server on 1 volume with 2x ntfs basic partitions. c: = the windows bit, d: = the data bit for user data.I have cloned (clonezilla) the volume to another and deleted the data (d bit and want to extend the c: into the freed space.I'm booted from a partedmagicv5 cd and using gparted to attempt this.I can't see a way to do this with gparted but then, I could be thick. Maybe I clone off reformat and copy back?Is there a better way or even is this the correct forum (please don't refer me to Microsoft website:-) for this type of question?This is a test box so not worried about breaking it, but the test is to try to solve a live problem at a school I support which is running out of hd space.

Got the gist of ubuntu quickly, thought to go ahead and delete the windows data in my partition. Evidentally didnt have it partitioned correctly, as the next time I rebooted, I recieved an "NTLDR is missing Ctrl+Alt+Del." message. I cannot reboot from a bootpatch usb/cd, as I took out everything pertaining to windows allready. However, I know that this can't be a hardware problem. Is there a way to fix BIOS to operate from ubuntu? Or did I pretty much hose myself?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am connecting to a Windows 2003 server share from my Ubuntu 9.10 machine. This is not a problem & deleting normal files is fine. What I am actually trying to do is remove a virus from this server. If I have AV software running on the server it is constantly picking up the virus & eventually this kills the server. The AV software is unable to remove the virus on the server, but is able to on desktop machines.Anyway, I thought use Linux to do the job & get the AV software back on the server. No go. I get a permission denied error when trying to remove the files with rm -f "filename"Is there anyway around this? I am reluctant to start the server with the Ubuntu live CD as it is in use as a file server. If I could remove the files manually this would be good.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI run 3 OS's: Win vista, win 7, and ubuntu. Every month I reinstall windows 7 (because I dont have a key), and everytime I do that it reinstalls the MBR. After that, I cant access ubuntu. I have used live cd's to try and reinstall grub with no sucess.What is the easiest way to achieve this? I was hoping I could make a CD to pop in my computer that could reinstall grub as it should be, or atleast boot me into ubuntu, and work from there. But even if I get into ubuntu, I dont know the commands to reinstall grub with autodetect of the other OS's.

Grub immediately takes over upon booting but doesn't detect any partitions. I tried booting from an opensuse cd and changing the boot order priority, but grub still comes up. Yesterday I made a mistake and formated the ubuntu partition as ntfs with a windows media because I needed to do a test in that partition. Now, off course, when I boot the computer is not finding GRUB and naturally not booting to windows.
I tried to boot with ubuntu live cd and did the apt-get install ms-sys but it just does not find the package. I can browse the windows files and all of that.
i have installed ubuntu using wubi, now i want to delete windows from the computer but how ? the reson i used a wubi install was that i used an old computer who had defect cd room and no option for a USB boot.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to make my music directory, located on my Ubuntu box, available to all the windows clients (Windows 7, to be specific) located around the apartment. It seems to work fine, I can see and read from the shares from my windows box, but deleting files doesn't work, I just get a permission denied.I've tried being as lenient as I can in the smb.conf, as well as setting 777 on the affected files, nothing changes. I've read, from my various googling, that the octal file permissions aren't as important as the samba permissions. Okay fine, but how do I tell samba to ignore permissions and let everyone delete files? I've read that samba works with samba users, but again, I don't care about users, I just want a global share that anyone can connect to and read (and delete) files.

However, I want to be careful not to remove the partition that has the Windows 7 Reinstallation boot disk just incase in the future I wish to go back to Windows. Is there a way I can make my entire computer Linux (no dual boot) but also not deleting the Windows 7 reinstallation partition?
Further, can someone example why, on Boot, I have like 5 options to choose from? Like two openSUSE versions, failsafe, Windows 1, and Windows 2....? To be honest, when I installed openSUSE, I just did the recommended partition job that it suggested. I don't know much about partitions.
