General :: Rsync A Share On A Windows Box

I've figured out about half of the problem this time. I've duplicated the directory structure of the Windows machine on the Linux server.
I then proceed with mounting the Windows share on the Linux server. I type the mount command while I'm in Folder1 on the Linux server:

So far so good. Now I need to rsync and the command for this is

But what do I fill in here? I'm guessing path/to/dst is just plain Folder1 on the Linux box. Path/to/src refers to the share on the Windows machine but since I've mounted that share, is path to source = path to destination?

I'm rsync'ing a bunch of files between a Windows and a Linux system. Since not all Windows care about case, some of the files on the Windows system no longer have the same casing as they had on the Linux system. But rsync now treats these files as different and uploads a new copy.
Is it possible to have rsync ignore the case?

am trying to sync data from Server A to Server B. The destination on Server B is a CIFS share and I need to preserve timestamps, permissions, etc. on all the data that I transfer. During the rsync process, I receive thousands of errors like the one below:
rsync: chown "/LBDCASAN001/JasonHarper/files/1259810304676/2010-12-22-01-00-03/0x22/0xc8/0x43/0x0a" failed: Permission denied (13)
I'm not sure if it's related at all, but my mount point on Server B has the permissions set as: drwxr-xr-x 2 root root when it is unmounted. When I mount the CIFS share, the mount point permissions change to: drwxrws---+ 3 root root
Also, here is the line from my /etc/fstab that mounts the share:
//X.X.X.X/LBXXXXX001 /LBXXXXX001 cifs username=LBXXXXX001,password=XXXXXXX!,uid=0,gid=0 0 0
When I perform the rsync, I'm authenticating to Server B from Server A as root.

We're in the process of implementing an offsite backup of all our servers to a remote Linux server. We're using rsync over ssh.What I've found is that characters such as ±, ¶,´ and £ are replaced on the Linux server with underscores.I don't mind if it changes these characters in the filenames of documents, but when it renames a language pack from Espa±ol.clx to Espa_ol.clx, it could cause issues for us further down the line.
What do I need to do differently to make the special characters copy over correctly? For the initial sync which will take place locally, before the machine is moved offsite, I have SAMBA enabled. I am able to copy files from Windows to the Samba share, retaining the original filename, though it looks different in the Linux directory listing, i.e. t̻st becomes ĻstThese files get deleted by rsync when it runs, as it does not match the filenames.

Have an issue with my CentOS server. I have a fully updated Centos 5.5 server and I have samba set up to serve shares to a couple of groups in my home office. I have it set up to force user/group and force directory create mode 770 and force file mode of 770. This set up works perfectly well for normal connections to the server; no matter who connects, all files and directories are owned by the specified users/group and create modes I specify. The problem is when I try to rsync some files to the same shares. When I do this, rsync ignores the directory/file forced create mode. It will honor the user/group, however. As an example, if I create a directory on one machine connected to the samba share, I get the following:

It seems that by default a Windows share mounted at /mnt/Windows/ will be owned by root and have 755 permissions set on all files. I usually do a chown or chmod to allow my user to have write access to these files. Does that affect the Windows files in any way? It takes quite some time to complete the chown/chmod when there's a lot of data. Where is the Linux permission data kept for the Windows share? On the Linux computer where I set the permissions? I just want to get a better understanding how this works.

It's easy to have multiple user accounts on one computer and even switch between accounts without logging off. It is also possible to have more than one display connected to a single computer. Is it possible to have one multi-core computer be used simultaneously by two users in their own accounts? Is there specific hardware required (to allow keyboard and mouse distinction for each user) and software configuration?
I know you can setup remote connections on windows that allow you to open and use a second user account without bothering the first user, but how about working locally on the same machine, essentially removing the network delay of remote desktops? What OS supports this? Linux Ubuntu? Windows 7?

I am setting up samba on my CentOS server for the first time. I am using webmin to configure samba. Here is the smb.conf

I can see the domain name "KISKA" in the "network" tab of windows explorer, however when I click on it I get this error: Windows cannot access \KISKA check the spelling of the name. otherwise there might be a problem with your network. Under the details of this error I get this: "The network path was not found" Also I have stopped iptables so it cant be firewalled

I am trying to allow my mother's Acer Aspire One (OS: Linpus Linnux Lite) to print on the WIFI Canon Pixma MP620 printer. The rest of the computers connected in the house run some variant of Windows. The printer has been set up to print wirelessly from the Windows computer. Having searched the internet for hours, I have determined that there aren't any drivers for that particular printer.
My potential solutions are:
1. Buy a new printer
2. Install Windows on the Aspire One (Last resort!)
3. Use this piece of software (http://www.printeranywhere.com/), which is installed on my Windows 7 computer which is on 90% of the time, and find some way to install it on Linux. (I tried Wine, and it opened up the installation .exe but when it came to actually installing, returned an error saying it needed to be installed on the same drive. :S)
4. Follow this tutorial (http://justin.yackoski.name/winp/) to print via my computer.
I think I will manage to follow the tutorial fine (as a complete Linux novice!), but I am having some problem with simply connecting to my Windows share folder, which I came across on this line of the tutorial: Test that you can access the share from the linux PC via smbclient. I.e., run: smbclient //windows_pc/spool -U print and make sure you can put a file into that shared directory. After I enter the password, as prompted, is returns:
session setup failed: SUCCESS - 0
When I try: "smbclient -L //WILL-PC -U Will", and then enter my password as prompted, it returns the same error. However if I try: "smbclient -L //WILL-PC -N", it returns: Anonymous login successful. Then my correct Domain, OS and server details. Then the titles: Sharename, Type and Comment
And then the following:
cli_rpc_pipe_open: cli_nt_create failed on pipe srvsvc to machine WILL-PC. Error was NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
Error returning browse list: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
Anonymous login successful
Then the same correct Domain, OS and server details
Then two headings: Server and Comment, each of which have a different entry below them to do with my printer.
Then the two headings: Workgroup and Master, below which there are two different workgroups that we have, and my computer and my sisters laptop.

fter my reinstall of 10.04 I am unable to print to my printer which is on a Windows XP desktop. Always worked before.I go to System/Admin/Printing. Then search for a network printer using the IP address of my printer. I get the address back showing the printer that I want. I go through the entire install process find the HP printer and then the driver for the model and get to the last step to install it and get this error

I have a computer running Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit with Gnome and another computer running Windows 7 64-bit. How can I share folders between these? I can use Samba to view my Windows shares, if I specify the IP address by going to the "Connect to Server..." option in the Places menu. Going to "Network" in Nautilus and trying to open "Windows Network" fails because it could not retrieve the share list from the server.
MY question, though, is how can I set up Samba (or some other software) such that my Windows box will be able to see my shared folders? And also, what is the difference between Samba and Samba4 (because both are in the repositories).

Given a single SMB network share (for example, \server\SHARED_FOLDER), I want to recursively list all the files, including those in the subdirectories (like find(1)).
I would prefer to do it in Linux, but I also accept Windows answers.

I installed samba with sudo apt-get smbclient smbfs
Next, I run smbclient -L computer_name_here and get the error NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE. What am I doing wrong? How can I solve this?

I'm interested in viewing the owners of files on a Windows Server 2003 share (mounted on a Linux computer). These "owners" would be users in Active Directory. If it's not possible to see the username, I wonder if it will at least show a unique identifier. Currently it says all files are owned by root with an "ls -l".

I just made my first RedHat Enterprise v5 installation, the thing is that i have on my network a windows server that i use for storage, i want to be able to share files between the windows server and the RH server, i already edit the smb.conf file and put my workgroup name, but i still cant see my the windows server. When o try to connect using the connect to server option it says, "could not open the location 'smb://server_ip_address/' Unknown error code: 46", i can ping the windows server

I have a linux (Ubuntu server 8) that is busy collecting data files for me, but I need to see them on a windows machine. The winXP computer is in an AD domain. The ubuntu server is running Samba and I believe I have set up sharing - I can see/list the files on winXP. however, when I try to open the files to read ( in this case by Wireshark ) I get a permissions denial. I'm pretty new to using Linux and I installed SUSE 11.3 on Sun Virtual Box to play around with it. I am trying to mount one of my Windows shares to my SUSE system and I'm getting an error "Mount error(13): Permission denied". I have made sure my Windows permissions are open, in fact I used a test share and added everyone and gave full control. Below is the command I tried to use to mount it.
mount -t cifs -o username=Nick //computername/share /mnt/temp
I pre-created the temp folder under mnt and I tried both my PC name and my ip address in the above command with the same error each time. I also tried using my pc name in my username string as well "username=pcname/Nick" and that did not work either. Can someone advise me why this error is occuring?

I need a command-line method of copying files from a Linux box to a Windows machine that is in a domain and requires authentication. I cannot install additional software or services on the Windows XP machine. I can install any software on the Linux machine. I've tried scp, but the connection failed and if my understanding is correct it is because scp requires that the target (windows machine) be running an ssh service. Is there a command-line linux utility that can pass Windows domain user and password and then copy a file from the linux machine to a share on the windows machine?

I am trying to mount a shared drive on a Windows Server 2008 machine using a Linux machine (Fedora 13). I try mounting by
# mount //HOSTNAME/SHARENAME /mnt/FOLDER
and I get mount error(13): Permission denied.
I have tried other options like # mount -t nfs //HOSTNAME/SHARENAME /mnt/FOLDER -o username=USERNAME and the same thing with different filesystem types (ntfs, smbfs, cifs).
I have:
checked all firewall configurations.
verified security/sharing settings
for the drive
verified registry keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesNfsSvrParameters
verified NFS server is running
I am familiar with Windows Server 2008 but I have never configured a system from scratch on my own. The computer I'm using used to have Windows 7 for sharing folders to a Linux server. I have just switched to Server 2008 and have not been able to mount anymore.
One thing that I think is that I tried setting up an identity mapping solution; however, I do not have a domain controller setup. I am still functioning on a workgroup.
