View 3 RepliesI received a WD 750gb My Passport hard drive for Christmas, after using karmic for a few months. However, when I plug in the drive, I get an error message that says "Unable to mount My Passport", followed by: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: $MFTMirr does not match $MFT (record 0).Failed to mount '/dev/ sdb1': Input/output error.NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/ FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g./dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details.
And I have no clue what this means. I figured that this would be a good first place to ask for help, as my roommate (who is my go-to for help with all things Linux) is also home for winter break. I would appreciate any help that can be given.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got 1 * 250 and 2 * 500GB HDDs.I mounted the 250 as '/' and 1 * 500GB as '/home'. What should I mount the final 500GB as (and how do I mount it after I've now installed it). I only want the 500GB as general storage. Also is it worth repartitioning the 250 with a dedicated section for 'swap' etc?

View 2 Replies View RelatedIn Redhat 4.x, we can use 'smbmount' to mount another linux samba server with 'user1'. But now we used redhat 5.3(64bit), there is no smbmount and I can only user mount command via root.
How can I mount a folder via 'user1', not root?
(BTW, I can run '#mount hostname:/sharename /mnt/u1, but the access right of /mnt/u1 is only for root.)
$ls -la
drwxrwxr-x root:root 4096 May 18 2010 u1
I wish it is "user1:user1"
drwxrwxr-x user1:user1 4096 May 18 2010 u1
I also edit /etc/fstab and add the following in. hostname:/sharename /mnt/u1 noauto,user1 0 0
mount: only root can mount xxx on xxx. It still doesn't work.
I have a program which mounts /dev/sdb1 for which I lack the source code. This device does not exist on my RedHat 9 system and I want to create /dev/sdb1 such that it's an alias for /dev/hdb1 Can I do this? with MAKEDEV?
I need to have an alias which will allow it to mount, not create a symbolic link to an already mounted directory. i.e. 'mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/harddrive' should actually mount /dev/hdb1

Yesterday, when I was installing Redhat Enterprise 5.4 on a HP server, I asked myself "how can I regain my access to the server if I happen to forget the root password?" I knew there must be a way. I consulted with my friend "Google". I'd like to share it here as my 1st post (too bad that I'm not allowed to paste screenshots)
1) Boot up the server, when you are at the "Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server..." entry, press "e".
2) Highlight the "kernel /vmlinuz...." line then press "e" again.
3) Type the word "single" to the end of the line (with an empty space before the word single). Press Enter.
4) Press "b"
5) System will boot. When you get the prompt "#", type "passwd" to enter in new password for root.
6) Reboot the system. Done
I have a directory on my server at /home/dave/www/images/site (ext3) which I want to mount directly to my Windows computer so that I can transfer data easily via command line tool. Is that something possible?

View 3 Replies View RelatedIm having a frustrating issue with my two machine cluster I setup using Conga. Everything was working great except now when lucci starts mysql the port (3306) is never opened to outside machines. I can do a "ps -ef | grep mysql" and see it running as well as login to mysql on the node it is running on - but an nmap of the machine does not show the 3306 port and I cannot login to mysql remotely and yes I turned off all iptables(iptables,ip6tables) and SElinux is disabled. What am I missing here? If I start mysql on my own (and it is using the same my.cnf as lucci is) it does show the port open and works perfect,t for some reason when lucci starts it, no dice
View 1 Replies View RelatedI mount a few locations from a VMware virtual machine, but currently every time I start up VMware I need to re-mount the locations once the VMware image has started up fully, which gets tedious. I'd like to be able to mount them automatically when VMware is started.
I generally double-click the .VMX file (which is associated with VMware Player) to launch the virtual machine, but once it has finished loading I would need to run the mount commands manually or execute a bash script that does it.
Is there any way you can think of to have it done automatically? One way I can think of is to start my virtual machine by running a script that starts VMware player, sleeps for a minute or so, then runs the mount command - but setting the right sleep interval would be difficult because this varies a fair bit - and overall, it's a solution that's kinda icky and that I'd like to avoid if there's some better option.
What I'm trying to do is to grant my regular user to locally mount partitions and shutdown the machine without a password. Here is what I've done to /etc/sudoers:
Code:
Host_Alias LOCAL = localhost
Cmnd_Alias SHUTDOWN = /sbin/shutdown
Cmnd_Alias MOUNT = /bin/mount, /bin/umount
<my_username> LOCAL=(root) NOPASSWD: SHUTDOWN, MOUNT
%wheel ALL=(ALL) ALL
My user is a member of wheel group and I want to type the password for each sudo command except for shutdown and mount. However I am asked for a password whenever I execute "sudo mount [...]" or "sudo shutdown [...]".
