Server :: How To Reset Root Password For Redhat Machine

Oct 25, 2010

Yesterday, when I was installing Redhat Enterprise 5.4 on a HP server, I asked myself "how can I regain my access to the server if I happen to forget the root password?" I knew there must be a way. I consulted with my friend "Google". I'd like to share it here as my 1st post (too bad that I'm not allowed to paste screenshots)

1) Boot up the server, when you are at the "Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server..." entry, press "e".
2) Highlight the "kernel /vmlinuz...." line then press "e" again.
3) Type the word "single" to the end of the line (with an empty space before the word single). Press Enter.
4) Press "b"
5) System will boot. When you get the prompt "#", type "passwd" to enter in new password for root.
6) Reboot the system. Done

General :: Importing User Accounts/passwords From Another Machine?

Jun 10, 2010

I have couple of users in one machine. I can access the /etc/passwd,/etc/shadow and /etc/group files in this box. I have another box. I want to create some user accounts in the second box by just looking in the passwd, shadow and group files in the first box. I would just copy over the corresponding lines into the corresponding for whichever accounts I want to create as new and also change the lines for which I want to update the account information. Is this possible and will also the passwords work fine? Please also let me know there is any good tool for automatically doing this kind of stuff. Both the boxes that I have are Ubuntu machines though one is running Ubuntu 8.04 and the other is 10.04.

Hardware :: Raid5 HD Acquired Swap Space Cause Raid To Fail

Mar 6, 2010

The weirdest thing I have ever saw happened today after i rebooted my server.I have an IDE drive with fedora core 12 installed.I have 4 500g sata drives that I made a FD partition on.
Created the raid using mdadm and had a sh script that assembled and mounted. This worked just fine for 4 days and about 6 reboots.then the other day I noticed an odd amount of net traffic coming in and out of the box and took it down to do some router configuring.

After I brought it back up and ran the sh script, I got a weird error, /dev/sdc device was busy. so I did an fdisk /dev/sdc, and sure enough it had a swap space and boot partition. I deleted em, rebooted and now I'm stuck at the grub screen. Somehow my drive names got fubared and I don't know how to recover my system.

Server :: Mysql In Redhat Two Machine Cluster Not Opening 3306 Port?

Jul 18, 2011

Im having a frustrating issue with my two machine cluster I setup using Conga. Everything was working great except now when lucci starts mysql the port (3306) is never opened to outside machines. I can do a "ps -ef | grep mysql" and see it running as well as login to mysql on the node it is running on - but an nmap of the machine does not show the 3306 port and I cannot login to mysql remotely and yes I turned off all iptables(iptables,ip6tables) and SElinux is disabled. What am I missing here? If I start mysql on my own (and it is using the same my.cnf as lucci is) it does show the port open and works perfect,t for some reason when lucci starts it, no dice
