Jun 23, 2011I have extended the Logical Volume and when I do an lvmdiskscan it shows the new extened value but when I do a df -h the mount (/var) still shows the old value?

May 16, 2011In Redhat 4.x, we can use 'smbmount' to mount another linux samba server with 'user1'. But now we used redhat 5.3(64bit), there is no smbmount and I can only user mount command via root.
How can I mount a folder via 'user1', not root?
(BTW, I can run '#mount hostname:/sharename /mnt/u1, but the access right of /mnt/u1 is only for root.)

I need to have an alias which will allow it to mount, not create a symbolic link to an already mounted directory. i.e. 'mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/harddrive' should actually mount /dev/hdb1

Apr 5, 2011I have serwer Debian with my website. My provider splited the disc into 5GB partition for / and 495GB partition for /var. Everything was going ok for over two years but now I don't have enough memory on /. I'd like to increase the partition but the problem is that /var is just next to it so I can't easily change the end of the first one. I need some safe solution. It might be even just shrinking partition for /var, adding new one after if it helps anyhow (I have about 450GB free memory).

Mar 23, 2011I have taken over looking after a EMC/Suse iscsi storage network. We recently run out of space on our virtual disk, so I added another 100GB from our storage pool using the EMC management software and the virtual disk the suse box is using expanded from 1.5TB to 1.6TB. That completed fine.
However the SuSe host is still showing 1.5TB. Do I need to extend the volume somehow? Or is it just a case of restarting the suse box. I have umounted and re-mounted but no change. It is imperitive the current data on there REMAINS INTACT!

Aug 31, 2010i would like to extend my main file system into the unallocated space that i have on my hard drive, the unallocated space is most of it, as it used to be a partition but was deleted, do i have to do this with a boot up disk because i think that it can only be done on an unmounted partition, or is there a way to do this while linux is running in the main partition.

Nov 6, 2010I have an ADSL router, wireless, at my home. However, the wifi range is extremely limited. I want to be able to have the wifi all over the house, or atleast about 20 feet away from till where it reaches till now (father and grandfather under the same roof can be a problem.)
So how do i get to it? can I get another router and have it connect to the present router? The present one is one with ethernet and wifi outputs, limited to 4 connections i think, and i have it configured to dial to the net automatically, i.e.: no dsl dial up from pc reqd.

Aug 24, 2010I'm still pretty new to servers and ubuntu and have ran into something I could see being a problem in the future. On a dedicated remote server I have installed a web server using the "How To Forge - Perfect server set up for ubuntu 10.04 and ispconfig". I have a forum and email up and running and shoutcast radio and teamspeak3 servers also. We can also nx into it if need be. I can reformat the 1T hdd remotely from my provider control panel and ssh is installed at the same time and a new root password is sent via email. The thing is I now realise that by default the file system is written to a 10gig partition.
This might usually be ok but ispconfig uses the /var/www folder on the file system to house the forum I host and the partition is filling up. My mate I co rent with is talking about starting a parrot/bird owners forum and i might eventually like to have a gaming forum as well. I realise I should probably have set things up differently but like I said I am new at all this and tbh the home directories never going to have much in it so theres 900 gig doing nothing. So my question is can I use anything to enlarge that partition remotely? I know theres gparted on disc and all the articles I found say I need to use a disc which obviously is out of the question.
So what I think I need is some sort of partition magic for ubuntu. I would really like to expand it so all my current files etc on it would stay as is. I'm also currently looking into back up methods and wondered if that would be the way to go? Back up my file system and home directories and then reformat and make the partition larger? Or could I copy the entire www folder to a newly created folder in /home and re write the site enabled files to point to it? Would this work and if so what else would I need to edit?

Jun 27, 2010I have installed oracle enterprise linux on VM ware with 20 gb allocated to guest OS. Now I want to install oracle apps in the guest Os, so I need to extend the volume. I have extended in Vm , but I have to partition in the guest OS, for that purpose I am using Gparted. But I am unable to extend to sda1. I need to have all the unallocation space allocated to sda1. Here is the screen shot, how can I do that. Right now when in press the command df -h in terminal I am gettig 18 gb as space available for sda1, I want to make it 200 gb, in which I would like to install oracle apps. Check out my screen shot.

Mar 22, 2010My brother has just installed 9.10 on his Inspiron 6400 and would like to have a dual screen setup using both the laptop display and a flatscreen attached to the VGA socket. Using the standard display options, the two displays are recognised and when the 'mirror screens' option is disabled then settings applied it works to the extent of allowing the cursor to move between the two monitors; however the monitors display nothing except a black screen and the cursor.
I've updated everything to the current version, had a look for restricted drivers (none are suggested by the GUI tool thing) and checked both displays work (both independently and as mirrored). I also had a look for an xorg.conf to poke around in but there wasn't one there.
General :: Mount External USB Drive In Debian To A Mount Point Based On The Volume Name
May 5, 2011How do I configure my Debian installation to mount external USB drives to mount points based on the volume names of the drives? For instance, if I have a thumb drive with the volume name of "SWORDFISH," how do I have Linux mount it at /media/SWORDFISH? I'm aware that this can be setup in FSTAB, but that requires that I know the UUID of the device beforehand and that I take the time to set each external device up in FSTAB first. That does nothing for me when I have a thumb drive that has never been plugged into my computer before.
This seems to be setup by default in Ubuntu/Kubuntu, but is not working for me with a fresh installation of Debian Squeeze and KDE4. I've spent the past 2 hours Googling for a solution and have turned up nothing. UPDATE: My results are inconsistent. Sometimes Debian mounts devices to mount points based on the volume names, and other times it gives them generic mount points (e.g. /media/usb1).

Feb 10, 2010I am trying to setup fstab to automatically mount my NTFS partitions. I have used various Mount managers to create the entries in fstab. The fstab seems fine, but when mounting at boot or even via Nautilus I get the error message that I do not have permission to mount the disk.
1) Can this permission be set in the fstab file? If so what is the syntax of the fstab entry?
2) If not, is there a tool i.e. GUI to set the mount permissions?
Software :: Adding Drive - Extending VG And LV - Partition New Drive?
May 10, 2010I need to expand one logical volume which is now in 99% utilization. The volume group only have 5GB and they need 25GB more so that I can add 30GB. The disks will be coming from SAN Storage. If the SAN Admin can successfully add the disks to the server and I can see it, should I still partition it and change the type to Linux LVM?
I have tried just doing a pvcreate without partitioning and do a vgextend and it works without actually partitioning the disks. But when I do "fdisk -l", it actually shows that the disk don't have partition.
Whether I need to partition the drive to 8e (Linux LVM) before doing? Which one is better? Below are my steps and please let me know if this the correct one.
Here's my steps:
1.) dmesg | grep sd (to check the newly added disks)
2.) fdisk /dev/sdx (create primary partition and assign Linux LVM to type)
3.) pvcreate /dev/sdx
4.) vgextend VolumeName /dev/sdx
5.) lvextend -L+30G Volume01 /dev/Volume01/lv01
6.) umount /dev/Volume01/lv01
7.) resize2fs /dev/Volume01/lv01
8.) mount /dev/Volume01/lv01 /lv01
9.) df -h (check if resized successfully)

I've been thinking and reading but I really don't find a solution, and this is why I decided to post here. I'm not a newbie using Linux but I know absolutely nothing about nfs and related stuff. If explanations are not clear/precise I'm sorry and absolutely open to explain myself better (I'm really desperate, at this point).
I'm running a Debian in a VirtualBox inside a RHEL5. To supply space to the virtual machine I'm trying to mount a disk (? maybe not?) that I created in the RHEL.
In RHEL: I created a directory /some/path/dir and I granted access to it from the VM (edit /etc/exports file and restart the nfs service)
In Debian: I created a directory to be used as mounting point (mkdir /other/nice/path/dir) and I tried to mount (mount -t nfs -v redhat:/some/path/dir /other/nice/path/dir). What happens next is the following:
mount.nfs: timeout set for Thu ...
mount.nfs: text-based options ...
mount.nfs: mount(2): Input/output error
mount.nfs: mount system call failed
Now, this Input/output error is too vague to trace where the problem is, but I really have no idea about how to go more in depth (are there logs somewhere? What should I look for? ... ...).
