General :: Vim - Text Files On Linux Have "<97>" Characters?

Apr 28, 2010

When viewing a particular text file in vim or less on Linux or OS X, all the en dashes show up as highlighted "<97>" characters. What control-sequence do I need to type in order to substitute the hyphens back? For example, the following doesn't work in vim:% s/<97>/--/gTyping bracket nine seven bracket is not the same as typing the actual special character.

General :: Loop Append Text To Text Files?

Jan 15, 2010

may be an advanced question but I need to know how to do this. Here at work I am in charge of recruiting and we have about 1,000 resumes in already. All of the resumes are in a .pdf format. I need to rename every .pdf in the following format:{firstnameLastname}.pdfThe only way I know how to do this is to convert all the .pdf files to text, extract the name out of the first few lines of text, import into excel, and then use VBA to rename the files in mass:Here is my logic so far:~Deskop/a = houses all the .pdfresumesOpen terminal: Code: cd ~/Desktop/afor f in *.pdf; do pdftotext -raw $f; done That will convert all of the preceding resumes into text filesNow I would like to append the name of the text file into the last line of the text file. So, for example, for Resume1.txt, I want to append "Resume1.txt" to the last line within Resume1.txt. So after I run the command I open Resume1.txt and on the last line within I want to see "Resume1.txt" on the last line, at the end of the resume. How can I do this? I would like to use a loop and have the terminal append the filename to the body of the text file until all of the have been appended.

Red Hat / Fedora :: LFTP From Linux To Mainframe (Data Contains Accent Characters)

Jun 9, 2010

I was wondering if someone can help me... I have a file that I am trying to LFTP from my Linux server to my Mainframe and the file is uploading but the data looks slightly corrupted..First off let me tell you the following text is French and it contains accent characters.Below is how the data looks when you view the data through vi or on the Mainframe:
factureNum

Note how the accent e is turned into a uppercase accent A and a copyright symbol. When I view the PC file in hex through Notepad ++ the turns into and the result is one character turning into two characters is a hex C3 and is a hex A9.

When I LFTP the file to the mainframe the characters are transferred and I end up with a hex 66 and a hex E4.The end result I am after is that I want to transfer my linux file, who's data looks like this on the linux server: factureNumro and like this when viewed on a PC: factureNumro to my mainframe and I want it to look the same as when I transfer it to the PC. Like this: factureNum.

General :: How Linux Configuration Files Work?

Feb 5, 2011

I've been struggling for a couple of days to understand how configuration files work in Linux but haven't really found any clear information regarding that.My main question, as there is not a standard configuration file format in Linux, is how the format of a configuration file is understood by a Linux program? How the program reads its configuration file and how it understands its syntax (file format)? Also, a further question is how the program knows where its configuration file is being located?

For example inittab has its own "Identifier:RunLevel:Action:Command" format. How this is recognised by the "init" process?

General :: Windows - Linux: Can't Overwrite Files On Samba Store

Jun 10, 2010

I'm using CentOS 5.5 with smbclient 3.0.33-3.28-el5 (latest version in repo), and I can't overwrite files in my Samba store. I am not the admin for the Windows server that hosts the share, so there isn't anything I can do server side. But I do have write permission to the server. I know the server runs Windows XP or Server 2003; I don't know which. I can delete the file, and then copy the new version over, but I can't overwrite it. Using the cp command I'll get this error:

[jonescb@localhost ~]$ cp foo.txt /mnt/si_storage/foo.txt
cp: cannot create regular file `/mnt/si_storage/foo.txt': No such file or directory`

And if I edit a file on the server using vim, I can save it once, but if I save it again I get this: "/mnt/si_storage/foo.txt" E212: Can't open file for writing This is my /etc/fstab entry for the samba server: //192.168.1.2/SI_STORAGE /mnt/si_storage cifs username=myuser, password=mypass 0 0 I can overwrite files just fine on my XP machine. The CentOS box is the only one having problems.

General :: Conflicting /usr & /etc Files While Installing Fedora 15 And Scientific Linux 6.1

Aug 9, 2011

Until some time ago I had a dual Windows 7 and Fedora operating system, then I completely moved to Fedora. Recently I have become interested in Scientific Linux and wanted to install it besides my Fedora. I took a back up of all my data and formatted my HDD for a clean install of both of them. This is what I did:

First I installed Scientific Linux with these partitions (contents of /etc/fstab):

[Code]...

Then I went on to install Fedora 15; I kept the same primary and extended partitions but only changed the names of "/FedoraRoot" to "/" and "/" to "/SLRoot" in the above list while installing Fedora. I also chose the boot directory of Fedora to be /dev/sda1/ which I wanted to be the /boot file for both systems while I had chosen the boot file for Scientific Linux to be "/dev/sda".

Everything went well until the final step of copying the files an error came that some of files that Fedora wanted to install in /usr/share, /usr/lib64, /usr/bin, /etc/system..., /etc/issue..., /etc/redhat-release... and /etc/rpm are already present in the Scientific Linux format and so there is a conflict and it has to terminate!!! I must have made some strange mistakes in the definitions
