I have an odd request, lets say I have a text file like this:

I want a script that will replace all of the hash tabs with random characters.I found this command will generate a random character

how to script a search and replace using that random character upon each successive find until the end of file occurs.

I have txt file with list of ID's and I need to insert comma in every line and then remove new line character so it'll become one long string. So to clarify, I have txt file content that looks like this.
234
5466
2356
... and so on.
but I would like this to change to 234,5466,2356,... I looked at sed and tried to wrap my head around the commands but I guess my brain isn't smart enough. its really confusing for me. I've managed to add commas to end of line (sed "s/$/,/g" filename) but somehow I can't seem to remove new line character from each line.
sed 's/[
]*$//' doesn't seem to work.

I have a file with special characters that need to be replaced. I've been working on this for a day and have run out of time.
Example: FILE='/var/tmp/S0000000.LOG.March-24-2011:10:51.tar'
Need to replace the ' with a " on all lines in the file.

I am having difficulty getting sed to replace a string of text in an XML file, despite the fact that I have no trouble using grep to find that same string. Since the new string and old string to be replaced contain a lot of special characters, I thought it best to store them in variables as opposed to using a slew of backslashes:
OLD_STRING='<property name="webServiceHost">${jboss.bind.address}</property>'
NEW_STRING='<!--<property name="webServiceHost">${jboss.bind.address}</property>-->'

How could I replace text in one file with text from another file using sed?
The text in each of the files would be surrounded by a starting and ending delimiter or a starting tag, say like /* */ so to easily find them.

I have large text files with space delimited strings (2-5). The strings can contain "'" or "-". I'd like to replace say the second space with a pipe. What's the best way to go?
Using sed I was thinking of this:

This is what I have right now. Well, I thought I knew sed, and apparently I don't... I tried writing this for someone else, and this has given me trouble, so since the user pretty much figured it out on his own, here it goes.
Say VARR=1, so VARX and VARY contain the above text, appended by 1.
What I am trying to do is replace the text "defaults.ctl.card 0" by VARX and "defaults.pcm.card 0" by VARY. The contents of FILE1 is the file being used to search for both text fields, and FILE2 is the output file. I tried using single quotes, double quotes, and a mixture of both, and no go whatsoever. So my question... What is the proper way of searching for text within a file and replacing with a variable?

Is there any way to use sed to replace certain text in a file with the persons username automatically? Right now i'm using

I would like it to automatically inject the persons usrname in the replacement string. Is this possible? I've been looking on line at various sed tutorials and I cant quite find what i'm looking for. I also didn't really see anything in the forums search function.Essentially i'm trying to take this file URL...Android.rules and replace all instances of username with the persons actual username automatically.

As indicated in the subject, I want to search a text. If the text is present I want to replace it. But if the text is not present, I want to insert it after first line and before last line.
Searched text is:CleanCache "*";
Where * can be anything.
Example: CleanCache "false"; -> CleanCache "true";
If CleanCache "false"; is not present, only insert CleanCache "true"; after first line and before last line.

What command could I use in terminal to delete all ASCII characters? That is, delete a-z, A-Z, 0-9, and all punctuation? I have a file containing Chinese characters, and I want to remove everything else and leave just the Chinese.
I can use grep to leave only the lines that have Chinese in them, but this still leaves a lot of non-Chinese stuff on those lines. Does anyone know how I could actually remove everything that isn't Chinese?

I'm working with javascript and trying to replace all instances of a Roman character in a string with nothing. How do I assign var reg to all Roman characters? In UTF8, capital letter A is U0041 and at the other end, small z is UFF5A.
So, I'd like to do something like:
var reg = u0041 - UFF5A;
str1 = str.replace(reg, '');
I think you get the idea. I have no idea if that can be done. The idea is to take this string (for example): str = make a door-to-door[house-to-house] visit / ring every doorbell." And take out all the Roman characters and define it as str1. And then take out all the Korean characters (u1100-uFFDC) and define it as str2. In fact, a WAY more useful thing to do would be to replace the instance of this: [u1100-uFFDC]+" "+[u0041-UFF5A] with [u1100-uFFDC]+","+[u0041-UFF5A] so that the output would be a .csv file.

Below is extract of my file:
What I need is to replace "--destination-path=" with "--destination-path=/home/dest"
i.e. desired output is ----destination-path=/home/dest
I could achieve it with below command
$cat outgoing-xfer|grep destination-path|perl -pi -e "s/destination-path=/destination-path=/home/dest/g"
But the problem is that in this case i just wanted to append "/home/dest" for which I could easily escape "/" with just two "", but I wonder if i have a long path like "/a/b/c/d/e/f/g/h/i/j" I will have to escape so many /. Is there any other way by which I can avoid escaping forward slash.

i have a problem, when i open OO, the text of the menus is replaced by little rectangles.
For example, instead of:
File Edit View etc..
(they look more like rectangles than squares) i also have this problem with drop down menus, font names, font styles and even with the numbers on the ruler.
