General :: Verify That 6 GB/s SATA Ports Are Working?

Dec 13, 2010

How do I verify that my 6 GB/s SATA ports are working under Linux?

Linux detects the ports, and I can use them for disks but I would like to figure out if they are using a 6 GB/s controller/driver instead of the slower, more common speed.

Ubuntu :: Is There A Way That Can Verify That TRIM Is Working?

Aug 26, 2010

I have an OCZ Vertex SSD...the 30GB variety. recently I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.33. I have read that that is all that is needed in order for trim to just start working. Is there a way that I can verify that TRIM is working?I'm debating getting the Vertex2 100GB model because I love my SSD now, but would love to have a little more storage space. I just don't want to buy it without TRIM working.

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 And Ubuntu 10.04 Playing Nicely Together WITHOUT Swapping The SATA Ports Or Something Like That ?

Apr 30, 2010

Alright guys, I'm out of ideas...
I have a system here with three harddiscs, the first is a 500GB disc which is supposed to contain Windows 7, the second is a 250GB disc for Ubuntu 10.04 and the third is a 1TB drive which contains all my music, movies and stuff like that.

Now I installed Windows 7 first, then Ubuntu 10.04 onto the other disc. The thing is that the Ubuntu-Installer gave me the option of installing them side by side by shrinking the Windows Disc, which I don't want it to because I hate to clutter up ONE drive with more than one OS, So,after installing and rebooting into Ubuntu, I went to see if I could still start Windows 7, which I now can't.

Is there a way to have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 playing nicely together WITHOUT swapping the SATA ports or something like that?don't ask why i'm giving Ubuntu the smaller drive... I'm still a gamer, and my games need a lot of space.I just want to make a switch to Ubuntu for the times where I'm not playing any kind of Games.

By the way: Both Operating Systems where installed in 64-bit flavour.

Ubuntu :: SATA II / Error "ata4: Limiting SATA Link Speed To 1.5 Gbps" - Allowing The SSD To Run At SATA II Speeds?

May 1, 2011

I keep getting this error in my log viewer every 2 seconds: Code: ata4: limiting SATA link speed to 1.5 Gbps I have a dual boot SSD and I have run many SMART tests in windows and linux, (using smartmon tools and the disk utility) and the reports are all 100% healthy..... My research shows that this error represents one of the following:

1. Problem with SATA controller
2. Changing BIOS to allow SATA
3. Changing SATA mode to PATA or AHCI
4. Replacing the SATA cable
5. Allowing the SSD to run at SATA II speeds, i.e. 3 Gbps

- Does anyone know how to try number 5, i.e. allowing the SSD to run at SATA II speeds? I am lost here and this problem has caused my machine to crash twice when watching a movie in linux/ ubuntu. (It is worth noting that the crashes have only occurred in linux and I have never had an issue in windows, so it does seem to be a linux setting somewhere, hence why I think it is a "allowing SATA II to run at correct speeds issue")

Hardware :: Usb Ports Not Working / What To Do?

Mar 7, 2010

I've installed Debian Lenny on a Fujitsu Amilo L7310GW, and everything works well, except for the usb ports. Anything plugged into them doesn't register at all. If I plug in my usb pendrive with the light then the light comes on for a moment and then nothing.

I started up Knoppix 6.2 from the same pendrive, and it starts to boot, right up to where you can choose the OS and options, and then a bit further but then it fails because I suppose enough of the OS has been bootstrapped to use it's own usb facilities.

I've looked at the logs, dmesg/syslog/messages/debug, and also got some output from lsusb but I can't see what could be the problem.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - Integrated USB Ports Not Working

Mar 2, 2011

The two integrated USB ports on a laptop of mine running Ubuntu 10.10 mysteriously stopped working a while back after some random updates. They still have power, and they are still recognized by the system, as per lsusb:
Code:
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

But although the ports still power up any connected appliances, they won't actually function. Any mouse I've tried so far won't work, nor will any external USB drive mount when connected. I don't even know where to begin to look. I believe the problem arose after an update to the xorg server, but I'm not sure. I just updated the kernel to 2.6.35-27, but that didn't solve the problem.

Hardware :: New Sata Disk Not Working?

Apr 1, 2010

I bought 2 new 1,5TB sata disks for my server. But when I plug them in my debian gives a error message: ata2: SRST failed error -16

The debian runs from an old 500GB ide disk and a 160Gb ide disk for the home dirs.

I tried antoher cable, but that is not the problem(or is that other cable also broken...). I also tried all sata modes in bios, auto, enhanced, sata-only. I also tried booting an ubuntu 9.10 live cd. But in gparted the disks won't show up.

Is it possible that the sata controller of the motherboard is to slow.

Hardware :: Belkin KVM Not Working With Usb Mouse And Keyboard Ports?

Jul 18, 2009

I'm trying to set up a new Dell machine with openSUSE 11.1 and KDE 4. For the rest of my PCs I use a Belkin kvm that connects the mouse and keyboard into PS/2 ports and it works. However, the new Dell doesn't have PS/2 ports and I can't get the machine to detect the mouse and keyboard (at all) unless I plug them in directly.

I'm using a Belkin four-port kvm, model number F1DJ104P. Does anyone know of a driver I could download to my Dell PC that would detect the devices via the kvm? The Belkin web site seems to be in pieces and is absolutely no use.

Alternatively, since I'm not particularly attached to the kvm, can anyone suggest a kvm switch that I could buy instead? It would have to have a minimum of four ports and be able to handle both Windows and Linux (all flavours with both OSs) machines, with both usb and PS/2 ports for mouse and keyboard. If it could handle audio, then that would be an improvement on what I've got already.

General :: Backup - Any Copy And Verify Command In Ubuntu?

Dec 5, 2010

I back up all my digital photos to a couple of places. I've been using the cp command, but--given the personal value--have started to wonder if there's a more reliable way. I'm no stranger to Linux, Bash, Perl, etc., so I could write something to copy and compare md5 hashes, but I was wondering if something already exists (reinvention, wheels and what-not).

Most of my googling for copy and (verify|valid|check|hash|confirm) turns up rsync. However, as far as I can tell, rsync only uses hashes to see if a file needs to be updated. It doesn't perform a hash comparison afterward. For this use, specifically, the files are binary and typically 8-10MB.

In past releases, changing the gdm.conf flag "TCPDISALLOW" from true to false would fix this. In the new /etc/gdm/gdm.schemas, I've tried making a similar change, but it's still not opening things up. I've downloaded gufw and have made sure the firewall is off. So, I'm not sure what to try next.

Ubuntu Networking :: Ethernet Ports Not Working On Fresh Build

Feb 27, 2011

I had 2 Ethernet ports and neither of them were working on a fresh build a friend was struggling with. After reading the suggestions to fix the issue and thinking that there had to be an easier way I had an epiphany. I would go to my spare parts box and bring out my old Netgear GA311 and pop it into the slot. So after searching for 10 minutes I found it and installed it. Booted up the rig and it found that right away (SWEET) now that's not the fix anybody can do that, once I updated Ubuntu the on-board ports started working (that's what I'm using now). I can't explain what the update did but for a few bucks a used card in the tool box might not be a bad idea!
Mother board is a Gigabyte GAX58A-UD5 Rev.1 Personally I'm an ASUS guy.

General :: Map Joysticks To Specific USB Ports?

Nov 17, 2010

I'm working on a Linux (fedora) based arcade dance machine using a game called Stepmania. I've got it all up and running and i'm trying to get it to work with two dance pads.

It detects the dance pads fine and they work well, the only issue is that when the machine is turned on it seems to randomly pick which pad is /dev/input/js0 and which is /dev/input/js1

What this leads to is the pad on the left controlling the character on the right & vice-versa. So I was wondering if there is any way to tie or map the joystick to a particular USB port so they always stay where they should ? Or is there another way this could be accomplished ?
