Hardware :: Usb Ports Not Working / What To Do?

Mar 7, 2010

I've installed Debian Lenny on a Fujitsu Amilo L7310GW, and everything works well, except for the usb ports. Anything plugged into them doesn't register at all. If I plug in my usb pendrive with the light then the light comes on for a moment and then nothing.

I started up Knoppix 6.2 from the same pendrive, and it starts to boot, right up to where you can choose the OS and options, and then a bit further but then it fails because I suppose enough of the OS has been bootstrapped to use it's own usb facilities.

I've looked at the logs, dmesg/syslog/messages/debug, and also got some output from lsusb but I can't see what could be the problem.

Ubuntu :: USB Ports Not Working?

Sep 2, 2010

I'm starting to feel like a spamer or something. (I don't usually have this many computer questions, I'm a nerd, but known NOTHING about ubuntu).

All of a sudden NONE of my usb ports work? I can't get USB drives to work or an external drive. They aren't recogonized at all and the lights on them don't light up.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - Integrated USB Ports Not Working

Mar 2, 2011

The two integrated USB ports on a laptop of mine running Ubuntu 10.10 mysteriously stopped working a while back after some random updates. They still have power, and they are still recognized by the system, as per lsusb:
Code:
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

But although the ports still power up any connected appliances, they won't actually function. Any mouse I've tried so far won't work, nor will any external USB drive mount when connected. I don't even know where to begin to look. I believe the problem arose after an update to the xorg server, but I'm not sure. I just updated the kernel to 2.6.35-27, but that didn't solve the problem.

Hardware :: Belkin KVM Not Working With Usb Mouse And Keyboard Ports?

Jul 18, 2009

I'm trying to set up a new Dell machine with openSUSE 11.1 and KDE 4. For the rest of my PCs I use a Belkin kvm that connects the mouse and keyboard into PS/2 ports and it works. However, the new Dell doesn't have PS/2 ports and I can't get the machine to detect the mouse and keyboard (at all) unless I plug them in directly.

I'm using a Belkin four-port kvm, model number F1DJ104P. Does anyone know of a driver I could download to my Dell PC that would detect the devices via the kvm? The Belkin web site seems to be in pieces and is absolutely no use.

Alternatively, since I'm not particularly attached to the kvm, can anyone suggest a kvm switch that I could buy instead? It would have to have a minimum of four ports and be able to handle both Windows and Linux (all flavours with both OSs) machines, with both usb and PS/2 ports for mouse and keyboard. If it could handle audio, then that would be an improvement on what I've got already.

Ubuntu Networking :: Ssh Not Working - Ports Not Open - Tcp Diallow For Lucid

May 7, 2010

I've installed a fresh copy of the latest 10.04 distro, lucid lynx and have problems connecting to the machine via ssh because the ports are all blocked (using nmap to check). In past releases, changing the gdm.conf flag "TCPDISALLOW" from true to false would fix this. In the new /etc/gdm/gdm.schemas, I've tried making a similar change, but it's still not opening things up. I've downloaded gufw and have made sure the firewall is off. So, I'm not sure what to try next.

Ubuntu Networking :: Ethernet Ports Not Working On Fresh Build

Feb 27, 2011

I had 2 Ethernet ports and neither of them were working on a fresh build a friend was struggling with. After reading the suggestions to fix the issue and thinking that there had to be an easier way I had an epiphany. I would go to my spare parts box and bring out my old Netgear GA311 and pop it into the slot. So after searching for 10 minutes I found it and installed it. Booted up the rig and it found that right away (SWEET) now that's not the fix anybody can do that, once I updated Ubuntu the on-board ports started working (that's what I'm using now). I can't explain what the update did but for a few bucks a used card in the tool box might not be a bad idea!
Mother board is a Gigabyte GAX58A-UD5 Rev.1 Personally I'm an ASUS guy.

Debian :: Why Are Ports Open?

Feb 2, 2010

Just did a check on "shields up" and it says that ten of my ports are open. I get the same result with or without both shorewall and firestarter. I suspect it may have something to do with the mysql server packages added automatically during installation. Am I right. If so, what can be done about it? If not, has anyone any idea how to keep my ports closed?

Ubuntu :: How To Test Usb Ports

Jan 5, 2010

I want to test automatically if the USB ports are in use.
I want to test it in a bash script

I found some information about ttyUSB0 in the /dev/

The problem is, there is usb hub between the system and the mouse/keyboard. The other USB port is in use for the Ubuntu live usb.
When I open the /dev/ map virtual and pull out the usb keyboard the hidraw1 diappears, same for the keyboard.
When both are out and I pull out the usb hub, nothing happens.

Do anyone know how to test it?

Slackware :: USB Ports Vanished From 12.1

Jul 20, 2010

I'm using slackware 12.1 for some time now and this morning (kind of the first day of my winter break) I decided to fix an old USB pen drive to save some docs... (bad idea #1). I had some trouble deleting some files. Slack kept telling me that the files weren't there, so (probably not the smartest decision ever) I decided to "format" the tiny thing. (bad idea #2). Cfdisk wouldn't do it and I ended up on fdisk. (bad idea #3). I thought I was formatting 4 partitions in the same pen drive which now I think might have been my four usb ports. After that, no USB Ports are working at my computer at all. I even boot slackware 13.1 from a dvd and still couldn't get any USB working. Rc.hotplug is nowhere to be found.

At the end of dmesg, I get:
usb 1-7: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2
usb 1-7: device descriptor read/64, error -32
usb 1-7: device descriptor read/64, error -32
usb 1-7: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3
usb 1-7: device descriptor read/64, error -32
usb 1-7: device descriptor read/64, error -32
usb 1-7: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
usb 1-7: device not accepting address 4, error -32 .....
usb 1-3: device not accepting address 21, error -32
I didn't mess with this kernel and everything was just great 4 hours ago.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Why The Ports To X86-64 Been So Slow

Sep 27, 2009

This individual has been within the Ohio State computer labs for sometime because educational endeavors ceased building another Linux personal computer since the last AMD Socket A smouldered within a RAM melt. (Have on idea way there was a smoulder because over clocking was not invoked!) This query is interesting because almost all of the new processors sold are sixty four bit. Flash which is still alpha or beta and a couple of Google applications have not been fully embraced upon the x84-64 architecture which is problematic!

Why? This is just a random post that might be locked or deleted but an individual has been disturbed with the lack of x86-64 application support within Linux considering Unix operating systems have been upon this architecture for an extended period compared to Microsoft operating systems. Citing that SUN or now Oracle possessed the sixty four but architecture when this individual started to dabble within the I.T. industry many years ago. There is still substantial grief that Redhat did not purchase SUN for the hardware.

Fedora Servers :: F11 - Cannot Open Ports 53 And 25

Mar 28, 2010

I've been struggling for days trying to open port 53 and 25 but can't get it to work. My iptables at /etc/sysconfig contains the following:
# Firewall configuration written by system-config-firewall
# Manual customization of this file is not recommended.
*filter
:INPUT ACCEPT [0:0]
:FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0]
:OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0] .....

On the server machine when I do port scan with nmap I see the following result:
Starting Nmap 4.76 [URL] at 2010-03-28 01:03 CET
Warning: Hostname localhost resolves to 2 IPs. Using 127.0.0.1.
Interesting ports on localhost (127.0.0.1):
Not shown: 986 closed ports .....

But when I try to do telnet from an external machine, e.g:
telnet <IP of host> 53
I get:
Connection refused
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host

I also did a port scan with a tool on an external machine but port 53 and 25 weren't listed as opened ports. Also CheckDNS.net on the server returns "Connection reset. Probably DNS server is offline". I am 100% sure that named and sendmail are running. When I do a ps -aux I see:

root 2550 0.0 0.0 9536 1960 ? Ss Mar23 0:02 sendmail: accepting connections
