General :: Ubuntu Windows Version Of Linux 'Monospace' Font

Feb 18, 2010

I'd really like a Windows version of the 'Monospace' font. In other words that exact font, I don't mean 'I want a monospaced font for Windows'.

General :: Gentoo+urxvt+terminus: How To Change Font Version

Jun 27, 2011

In my Debian installation I can type extended ASCII characters such as åäö by default using the terminus font, however in Gentoo I can't get it to work so far. Nothing happens when I hit those keys, like in this thread:Missing glyphs in Terminus font, how to setup a fallback font ? But in this case I know terminus supports those characters in at least some of its versions, since it's works in Debian. So what I want is to find out how to see and choose which of the many different terminus font files is being used. I set the font in the same way on both Debian and Gentoo, using URxvt*font: xft:terminus:size=xx in .Xdefaults. Both systems use en_US.UTF-8 as default locale.

It improved things but again the lag is important. Linux is in general much faster than windows, so I wonder why is it happening ?

Does anyone have an idea where do I begin solving this?

General :: How To Hide Live USB Partition From Linux / Windows?

May 18, 2010

I want to set up my USB memory stick(s) (4gb) so that I have a partition (3gb?) for personal data storage and another hidden (1gb?) for booting/installing Ubuntu live from the 'stick' on friends' and colleagues' computers.I have a number of queries:

1) If I flag the boot partition 'hidden' in Gparted, it does what I want in Ubuntu but not in Windows; in Windows you can see the hidden partition, 'Wubi', and not the storage one. Does it simply depend on the physical position of the partitions on the memory stick?

2) I am using Unetbootin and Gparted (both GUIs). Should I prepare the live boot partition before or after partitioning the memory stick?

3) How much memory should I allow for the live boot partition?

4) Is there anyone who has asked similar questions or tried to achieve the same results before? Please let me know if I'm doing it all wrong.

General :: Missing Glyphs In Terminus Font - Setup A Fallback Font?

Jul 8, 2010

Most of my work happens in a terminal, so I need a clear, readable font. I've settled a while ago on Terminus [URL]..., which works wonders for me. I added XTerm*faceName : Terminus in my ~/.Xdefaults, and I do get the Terminus font. Unfortunately, a lot of Unicode glyphs are missing (mathematical symbols, greek and hebrew letters), displaying as little square blocks instead.

If I remove the faceName entry, the default configuration seems able to display most of the glyphs (including math, greek, hebrew, runic, and whatever else), but the default font is much harder to read.

A google search hints that it should be possible to use Terminus as the default font, and fallback to (an)other one(s) for missing glyphs, but provides no further explanation. I've seen documentation that recommends Bitstream Vera Sans as a fallback, but it lacks the glyphs I need too; I don't know how to identify the default font used by xterm either, I had a look at /usr/share/X11/app-defaults/XTerm, but all I can find are generic references to old pre-fontconfig font names.

Using Gentoo Linux, fontconfig and xterm are up to date, USEs trutype and unicode enabled, X.Org server 1.6.

Edit: I alternate between Ratpoison, Awesome and XMonad, without a desktop environment.

Fedora :: Ugly Monospace Fonts In Evolution

Changing the fonts in Edit -> Preferences -> Mail Preferences -> General seems to have no effect on Evolution at all. Is anyone else having the same problem? Should I file a bug? Here's a screenshot of gedit and Evolution. In gedit, I've checked "Use the system fixed width font (Monospace)" and in Evolution I've checked "Use the same fonts as other applications". Still, the fonts in Evolution are different than in gedit and much uglier.

General :: Windows - Linux: Can't Overwrite Files On Samba Store

Jun 10, 2010

I'm using CentOS 5.5 with smbclient 3.0.33-3.28-el5 (latest version in repo), and I can't overwrite files in my Samba store. I am not the admin for the Windows server that hosts the share, so there isn't anything I can do server side. But I do have write permission to the server. I know the server runs Windows XP or Server 2003; I don't know which. I can delete the file, and then copy the new version over, but I can't overwrite it. Using the cp command I'll get this error:

[jonescb@localhost ~]$ cp foo.txt /mnt/si_storage/foo.txt
cp: cannot create regular file `/mnt/si_storage/foo.txt': No such file or directory`

And if I edit a file on the server using vim, I can save it once, but if I save it again I get this: "/mnt/si_storage/foo.txt" E212: Can't open file for writing This is my /etc/fstab entry for the samba server: //192.168.1.2/SI_STORAGE /mnt/si_storage cifs username=myuser, password=mypass 0 0 I can overwrite files just fine on my XP machine. The CentOS box is the only one having problems.

General :: Websites Don't Display Properly In Linux / But Fine In Windows

Mar 16, 2010

I tried troubleshooting this on the Ubuntu forums, but my thread went nowhere, so here I am! I'm REALLY hoping someone can help, because this is immensely frustrating.I just moved to a new house, with a new ISP. All of a sudden, all the machines running Ubuntu (there are 4 of them on my network) are having trouble rendering websites properly. Some websites are perfectly fine; some render with things missing (e.g., no photos or no CSS); some render as text-only; and some won't display at all - I get a "server not found" error. If I boot into Windows on any of these machines, there's no problem. To complicate matters more: Sometimes the "server not found" sites will decide to connect, then they'll fail again. This has been changing day to day (sometimes even hour to hour). Anything within the google.com domain is a good example of this. Two of the affected machines are desktops (one running headless as a server), and two are laptops. All four are running Ubuntu, but they're all running different kernels. The ONLY things these machines have in common is that they're running Ubuntu, and they're all connecting to the internet wirelessly.

Because things work properly in Windows without exception, and because (at least on the laptops) things work fine in Ubuntu on any other internet connection, I can rule out wireless network adapters. I have tried using two different wireless routers - no change. I have tried using 4 different web browsers - no change. I have tried plugging a laptop directly into the incoming connection, bypassing the router entirely - no change. I have tried purging and reinstalling Flash on one of the laptops - no change. I have tried to connect to affected websites using their IP addresses to rule out DNS issues - no change. This one has me completely stumped. The only thing I can think is that this is something to do with my ISP, but I can't imagine what it would be. I called the guy who runs the ISP (it's a local outfit run by one or two guys, as I'm living in the middle of nowhere), and he said there's nothing he's aware of at the ISP level that would be causing a problem like this.
