I recently upgraded my system to ubuntu11.04 from 10.10 . Now i am facing the problem that there is no taskbar at the top of the screen and a dock on left hand side of the screen as intended in unity.However if I click on these area they perform intended functions,but I can't see a thing .

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I run a program in fullscreen (a ..... video, for example), the taskbar stays on screen. To be abundantly clear, I mean the bar along the top with the power button and user name on it. It stays on the screen, but I can't interact with it; the mouse clicks "under" it as if it weren't there. I'm sure Compiz has something to do with it as it's as new problem, but I don't know how to fix it. I tried disabling Window Decoration, I tried setting it so it only applied to windows with !(state=fullscreen), but nothing seems to work.As a related problem, the menu button in Firefox (the one to the left of the tabs) just appeared out of nowhere. How do I make that go away? And the menu bar as a part of the taskbar doesn't work any more. Where's the option for that?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to get this working for a while. On a remote server I'm running irssi in a screen session to keep my IRC client connected 24/7. I SSH to that server and reattach the screen session. irssi is able to send alerts when certain highlight words are mentioned (e.g. my nick). I would like gnome-terminal to flash in the taskbar when that happens. I was able to get this working with Putty on Windows, but I can't figure out how to get that working with gnome-terminal. Is it at all possible? The "Terminal bell" setting in the gnome-terminal profile doesn't seem to change anything.

One thing I noticed that's been bothering me is that when I get an IM, instead of the window flashing on my taskbar, the text in the title just gets bolded so I never seem to notice it. Is there any wayould change the notification for those kinds of things to something a bit more noticeable?

I can't access mixer window from taskbar, my keyboard volume knob doesn't work, mute too. But - all the generated events are there, because when the problem goes away (usually in the range of 10-30 seconds), all the events that I generated (volume up/down, mute) are applied.
Straced kmix startup. And it looks like it was waitinf for some information from dbus - i see it sent and received some messages to fd=3 (which is earlier connected to /tmp/dbus-something), and then it waits 21 seconds!, and then it gets new message from dbus, message looks like:

Normally when a program is open an entry is placed on the taskbar in order to easily find it, which is useful when a lot of programs are open. In Ubuntu 10.04, when I moved a program to the other monitor (I'm using 2 monitors) the taskbar entry also moves to the taskbar on that monitor.
Now I switched over to Ultimate Edition, which is Ubuntu 10.04 with a lot of stuff added to it. When I drag a program to the other monitor, the entry in the taskbar disappears, but it does not reappear in the taskbar of the other monitor. So now the only way for me to find a program on this monitor if its hidden behind other windows is to use alt-tab.
How do I set the taskbar to display only the windows from the current desktop? I did it once before, but am on a new installation of my distro.

I want clicking on the skype desktop icon to open the window of already running instance instead of a new one (like it happens in Window$).I am using Lucid puppy 520.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi am fairly new to Ubuntu. i was using it fine for a month, but today, when i booted my computer up, it came up with a black screen instead of the normal purple ubuntu screen. the black screen had white text on it, and asked for my username and password. from there, it was a terminal prompt. i have been google searching for a while, and have tried typing "startx", "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop", "sudo gdm", and i have also tryed uninstalling xorg, and reinstalling, and none of these things wanted to do anything for me.

I have managed to get those two icons back using 'notification area' but the computer will not shutdown now.

I recently upgraded to 11.04 from 10.10.trouble (not showing titlebars after I had trie to enable the "desktop cube" feature) so I decided the best plan of action was to get rid of Compiz. That turned out to be a mistake. Now I have no launcher or taskbar, and since I'm somewhat, well, inept at this so far I have no idea how to get my desktop back in working order.e managed to install compiz and emerald once again, but I can't get to the startup application editor to make it run automatically. Is there a way to get the default desktop environment handler to kick back in?

View 7 Replies View RelatedUnfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.
The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.
So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.
I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue
I'd like to have my VNC sessions to a server use a separate display from the physical screen. So that e.g. I could have the physical screen locked in screensaver while the VNC display is unlocked.

After I ssh'd back in to the server, I can no longer attach to that screen. screen -ls shows that the screen is already attached. I tried screen -D to force detach it, and it said detach but screen -ls still says it's attached. I tried screen -x and it just hangs there.
