May 19, 2010i just installed lucid lynx last weekend (reinstalled it and my w7 os a few times actually after the upgrade from 9.xx to 10.04 went horribly awry).
get my dual monitors working? i have a PNY NVIDIA Quadro FX 380 low profile card which has dual monitor support and am trying to get my dual displays set up but when i go pref>admin>nvidia xserver settings, this gives me the following msg:

so i opened a terminal and did this:

i then restart ubuntu (that's what i'm supposed to do to"restart the X server", right?) and i get a startup error that wants to put me in low graphics mode, but actually ends up not in low graphics when i start.

On the download page of R (The Comprehensive R Archive Network) there are options to download the code for Debian, Redhat, Suse, and Ubuntu. Which one should I download in my case (using Slackware)? Is there any of them which I should not download?

But when I reboot I just get black screen I have to rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf then x auto starts,
I would like to have seperate displays.
I boot into runlevel 3 system-config-display will not let me select the second video card for dual head?
When in Gnome nvidia-settings tells me their is no xorg.conf to run nvidia-xconfg so I cannt configure it.
I have included my Xorg.0.log also the xorg.conf that nvidia-xconfig makes(this is a copy of it) I can provide more info if needed.

I have a hosting space based on cetos server where I have both ftp as well as ssh access and I can create a subdomain there pointing to a folder which I can define. So based on this scenario what might be the best way for me to create a debian signed repo ? I have found

Which can create such repo for testing branch; as main non-free contrib style.
General :: Switching Between Monitors In Dual-head Setup
Feb 16, 2011I'm using gnome in a dual-head setup with individual desktops. Is there any way to "jump" to another monitor using the keyboard only? Now the only method I know is to move the mouse pointer to the another screen and click on something there. Can I do something like that without using the mouse?

Jul 12, 2010I am Currently attempting to set up a Dual Screen setup at my work but seem to be having some strange results. For some reason the O/S is only recognising one of the monitors, it knows exactly what the Make and model of the monitor is but doesnt appear to know that there is another monitor plugged in. It constantly says that there is 2 screens plugged in but lists the second screen as "CRT-0" even if no DVI cable is plugged into the second screen. This has really troubled me and has really got me thinking. I have set-up other Dual-screen setups with exactly the same hardware previously and it has worked fine? I am using a Lenovo A58 Tower with an Nvidia Quadro FX-380 Graphics card that I know is capable of dual Dual-link DVI output! With 2 x LG W3000-H Monitors running Fedora 12.

My plan is to optimize the system for speed and utility, upgrade the OS from W2000 Pro to XP Pro, and include dual boot so as to install some version/distro (?) of Linux to learn on. Present system: X86 based (32 bit), using a P4, 1.8 GHz/400 MHz fsb, with 512mb of DDR RAM installed, can upgrade to 2 gigs total.Shuttle MV42 motherboard, including onboard video and sound (S3 Graphics ProSavage DDR P4M266/VIA 8751/8233 chipset, VIA AC'97 Audio Controller, 2.2 compliant)
If I should decide to use the available 160 gig drive as a dual boot system, in order to install both XP and some version of Linux, how should I set it up? How many partitions will XP and Linux need or work with best? How much space for each OS? What file systems? Should I format/partition it with the existing W2000 OS? What comes first, the chicken or the egg? (XP or Linux?) I have read somewhere that it matters which OS is installed first, due to boot records being overwritten by successive OS installs. I plan to keep W2000 on the first HDD at least until I move my files over to XP. Will I need to switch the master/slave designations after installing XP and Linux on the new drive, since I will want to boot from that drive?

Both screen are identical 22" LCD LG W2246 Monitors.
I have Dual X-Display setup.
I am using Gnome Desktop.
The left hand screen displays everything, menus, panels, background and of course desktop launchers.
The right hand screen displays everything except the desktop launchers.
If I create a new launcher on the left it appears on the left desktop when created.
If I create a new launcher on the right it appears on the left and can not be dragged over to the right screen.
Fedora :: "gap" Between Dual-head Portrait Displays?
Aug 20, 2009I did a fresh install of FC11. I have 2 Dell 22" widescreen monitors turned in portrait mode. The display preferences tool let me rotate the displays, but wont let me move them directly adjacent to each other, so I have what amounts to a "gap" between this displays. This is very annoying when dragginga window from one display to the other, as it disappears when it is in the gap, and causes a "delay" when just moving the mouse from one display to the other.The behavior I get when I try to drag the displays adjacent to each other, is that they will go anywhere EXCEPT adjacent...as in they will happily overlap or cover each other, or partially overlap diagaonally etc. Note that they will go adjacent when in normal rotation.

Jan 24, 2010I'm trying to take my current windows7 (x64) setup and make it into a dual-boot setup with slackware 13.0 (x32) and am hitting a brickwall. I guess I would like to know if I can salvage the situation without formating my windows drive. I fully intend to, but I had hoped to not do it this month. I'd like to get dual boot going so I can master it and acquire all the files/drivers I'll want and then format and do it 100% right next time.
Currently I have windows setup on a 3x 500gb Raid0 onboard array which itself has been flawless. After I shrunk my current partition size to give me about 25gb of free space I proceeded to setup Linux, and I was unable to perform the cfdisk portion for partitioning the array for Linux.
I tried using cfdisk:
/dev/hdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)
/dev/sdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)
I even attempted to locate with: cat proc/partition and tried using cfdisk on every device it located. It always said it was either an unknown partition table and should I start at zero, or bad partition. I was of course too concerned over my windows setup (which has almost 1tb of stuff I have not backed up) to go any further into the unknown.
PS: I have used Slackware before, back at 8.1, 10, and even a very brief interlude at 12.0, this is my first attempt on this computer however with 13.0, it is currently running fine on my laptop and my PS3 (Laptop is even dual booting 7/Slack13. Albeit without raid)

May 10, 2010I recently installed Ubuntu and I am dual booting it with Windows 7. I showed it to my friend and he likes it. He wants me to dual boot his computer with Ubuntu, also.We were wondering if there was a way to configure GRUB and that stuff so that it doesn't go to the GRUB boot screen when you start your computer where you pick an OS. We were wondering if you could set a default OS that the computer automatically booted to, unless you press a button at startup, and then you could get to GRUB to pick a different OS.
The reason being is because his whole family uses the computer, and we don't want to confuse them with GRUB every time they start up the computer. We just want the computer to boot to Win7 by default, but being able to boot into Ubuntu if you press a button to get to GRUB when booting.

Feb 16, 2011I have a dual setup and just switched from Xubuntus Xfce? to Fluxbox... But now I can't set wallpapers on both my screens anymore. How do I do that? I had to change the Fluxbox menu from Head 1 to Head 2 to get it on my bigger, primary screen. Which is the one getting a wallpaper when I'm setting one.

Ubuntu :: Setup Dual-boot On HP Mini?
Jul 2, 2011I bought my wife an HP Mini [URL].. and want to get Ubuntu Netbook running on it. It comes with Windows 7 Starter, which we want to retain because Netflix won't run with Linux (gives you some BS error about "your browser is compatible, but your OS isn't"). So, I'd like to dual boot.
My desktop right now runs Kubuntu, and then I can boot in XP using VirtualBox OSE. Owing to the fact that the netbook is down on power relative to my desktop, doesn't seem like a good idea on the netbook, hence dual boot. I've seen a lot of "help, I just screwed this up!" threads, and since HP wasn't kind enough to send along a disc with Windows 7 on it, I need to get this right the first time. So, I'm going to post what I'm planning to do, let me know if I'm going to mess this up. I've compiled the below looking through a bunch of previous threads.
1) Defrag Windows drive
2) Use Windows 7 software to shrink the Windows partition
2b) Do NOT create a new partition using Windows software, just keep it unallocated
3) Boot off of USB key with Ubuntu in it, select unallocated space for install
Questions:
1) When I boot the computer up, I should get a GRUB screen asking which OS I want to boot into, correct?
2) I'm downloading 11.04 right now...anything to watch out for?
3) I couldn't find an install file for Ubuntu Netbook, do I make that selection during the install?

My Acer computer, on which I have linux linpus lite, comes with very little documentation and while I have a physics BA and have had exposure to technology, my knowledge of linux is just about zip. Is there a good place to start? As you can see, this question about the word "distribution" is a razor thin top of an enormous iceberg of ignorance.

Feb 18, 2010I just bought a Dell 537s machine and configured it for dual boot of Windows 7 and Kubuntu 9.10. On my old dual boot machine I had the Windows System and the Linux System on different disk partitions. That way I could write fstab in such a way as to make the Windows System read-only as seen from Linux, so Linux couldn't mess up any Windows System files (and since Windows can't read ext3, Windows couldn't mess up the Linux System).
But the new machine came with Windows 7 installed and gobbling up 3 primary partitions. Kubuntu installed itself in such a way that Linux can read/write to the Windows System. This makes me nervous that Kubuntu might be able to mess up Windows 7.
Is there any way to make specific Windows 7 directories/files unwriteable as seen from Linux without altering their behavior in Windows 7?
Ubuntu :: Dual Head Setup - Multiple Conky
Jun 14, 2010I am trying out conky for the first time and rather enjoying it. I have a small frustration though. I have a dual head setup and would like to have identical conky's showing on both monitors. I have tried creating two .conkyrc's (.conkyrc1 & .conkyrc2) and then using:-

to launch them, this results in only one of the two conky's displaying. I did at first think that maybe they were on top of eachother, but one conkyrc is set bottom_left, the other bottom_right so they should not be right??

Jan 2, 2011I have a windows 7 machine and installed ubuntu 10.4 32 bit in its own partition. I want to replace the 32 bit ubuntu installation with a 64 bit installation. I downloaded the 64 bit version, booted up on the install cd, and started the install. I got as far as the partition set up before chickening out. I was going to use the manual partition option, select the existing ubuntu partition, reformat, and install. I chickened out because i was afraid that this would also reinstall the grub boot loader without the dual boot option disabling my ability to get into win 7. How should i proceed so that i can replace the existing 32 bit ubuntu with a fresh 64 bit install and still be able to boot into win 7?

I then copy back the Ubuntu partition to the 2nd disk.I gather at his point i run the live Ubuntu cd, open a terminal and run sudo update-grub.

- one NTFS partition for Vista
- one NTFS partition for my Vista Data (shared with Ubuntu)
- one ext3 partition for Ubuntu (mounted at /)
- one very large ext3 partition for my Ubuntu home folder (mounted at /home)
I would now like to add Windows XP to this setup, but I am not sure where to start.I know I need to somehow shrink the large ext3 partition so I have an extra partition for XP, which should be NTFS.Then I assume I need to install XP on this partition, and somehow make XP appear in grub.how to do these things. Can anyone help? Please keep the instructions very basic, do not assume that I know anything.
