General :: Set Up SNMP Monitoring Using Cricket

Feb 12, 2010

I have been trying to set up SNMP monitoring using Cricket. I believe I have Cricket running fine, however I also believe that I have SNMP set up wrong. When I do an SNMPWALK I get the following:

[Code]....

This tells me I have SNMP running, however I would expect to see a lot more data... Am I correct, should I see more data? I spoke to a friend, and he suggested that I have something not set up correctly in SNMP dealing with the community string...

General :: Network Manager - Cricket Broadband Is Down After Installing Wicd ?

Mar 2, 2010

I have a dell insp 1545 windows7-ubuntu9.10 dual boot. the linux os would not activate the wireless network function in the network manager (but the cricket broadband was being detected and was in fact active). well, i did a little looking around and found another network mgr (wicd?, i think it's called... or something like that) and installed it. IT is working, but now the cricket broadband is down, which is my mainstay internet connection right now. i'm thinking that maybe it's got something to do w/the flipflop.sh function but that's just a wild guess.

OpenSUSE Network :: Cricket A600 USB Broadband Modem Install?

May 13, 2009

I recently got one of these modems and it had discovered very serious detection problems. I had been using one of the Cricket PCMCIA modems but it had a problem of dropping connections every 30 seconds or so. Anyway, this modem works a lot better but there is a trick to get it working.

Since the modem has a built-in flash card reader and flash memory containing the Windows software, when you first plug the device in, it is detected by the OS as a flash drive rather than a modem. If you try to configure the modem at this point, it will be impossible since no modem will have yet been detected.

In order to get the device to be detected as a modem, it needs to be "flipped". The following thread from the Ubuntu forums discusses the details of the problem and contains a link to a utility to "flip" the device: [ubuntu] HOWTO: Cricket Wireless A600 Broadband Modem - Ubuntu Forums

Once the device is flipped, I configured it using YAST / Network Devices / Modems. Mine is detected as /dev/tty/ACM0. I use Kinternet to connect, though Network Manager may also work, but I have not yet tested it.

General :: SNMP For Managing Machines Remotely?

May 24, 2011

I just narrowly passed another exam on UNIX Academy. Their DVDs are incredible. While I made some mistakes here and there.I was really stumbled upon a question that was formulated something like "SNMP for managing Linux machines remotely".I can't remember the exact definition. I'm not sure what it was about.I was under impression that SNMP it is a carrier protocol for commands like "ping" and "traceroute". I was trying to read about it online but it is way too broad and technical, they're loosing me on very first page. I suspect there's some kind of product or technology that uses SNMP in some way to handle Linux, I'm not sure.

Jul 2, 2010

Iam using snmp to access the remote system data. But according to the requirement iam encoding the snmp request data to OAMPDU packet format and sending to remote system.the remote system receives the OAMPDU packet, decodes it and is sending the snmp packet to snmp agent through UDP socket which is bind to port 161.but iam unable to receive the response from snmp agent.i have created a udp socket which is bind to 161 port to receive the response.

if i use any other free port number other than 161 for receiving snmp agent is not sending the response to that port.can any one please suggest me how to overcome this problem. Can we configure the different ports for tx,rx ?How do we know on which port does snmp sends the response ???

General :: Snmp Acting Illogically - In/out( IfInOctets/ifOutOctets) Count Decreases

Dec 23, 2010

I am trying to calculate band Width on few interfaces. Every thing works fine, bandWidth goes up when user loged in it goes down the moment working hrs are over. Only problem is once in a while it show negative bandWidth ? I make that script to send information in-case it negative. here are few examples

Code:

from IP XX.X.X.X interface X
inCounters new = 1056124169 old = 484753332
outCounters new = 71539457 old = 4205963496
inDelta = 571370837

[code]....

Code:

inPut utilization = (change x 8 X 100) / (change in time X connection speed)

but that would not matter because , problem is caused by lowering count on in and out packets.

General :: Need Tool For HDD Health Monitoring

Feb 12, 2011

I wonder if there is any tool that can read health of my HDD's? There are tons in windows but what options are there in Linux? I would really hope there is a tool a can install without using terminal cause I dont have web access for the Xubuntu right now. If anyone aware of such a tool, preferable a .deb file so I can easily install without hazzle. Also I hope tools like that are not littered with tons of dependencies. Cause those dependencies are a major challenge without online connection. If there exist any smart terminal commands that will let med check health status pls let me know and pls write down the command. I have enabled the s.m.a.r.t in BIOS.
I have 4 drives running Raid 0 if that matters.

General :: Monitoring Internet Connection Speed?

Jul 30, 2010

Quote:

I'm trying to find a good host for my site, and I've been trying to get one with a fast, reliable connection - I frequently use it as a proxy server for various areas, and since my connection is frequently a 50 Mb or 100 Mb line, I need a fast network connection so it doesn't slow down too much when I switch to the proxy server.

At the moment, I've narrowed it down to a couple of providers that are all within a few hops and <6ms away from my main location; it pretty much comes down to connection speed. One in particular that I'm trialing offers an metered 100100 connection at a good price, so I'm hoping to go with them, but I want to make sure the connection is solid and doesn't drop to a much lower speed during the day if they are sharing it among many users.

I have a pretty simple speed test procedure - I use wget on a 1GB file hosted on a backbone with a 1GB connection, and see how fast it downloads. For now, it's sticking at a steady 11.2 MBs or 90 Mbs, which is fast enough for me, but I need to make sure it can maintain that speed even in times of heavy usage.

[/BACKSTORY]

Basically, I need a script that runs wget every half hour and logs the output and time in a reasonably readable format. It's probably something simple enough to do, but I'm just learning my way around the linux command shell, so some simple instructions on how to create and run such a script would be great [CentOS 5]. I have full root access to the server and I'm the only user on it if it matters.
