Jan 5, 2011I have it at lot that when a system crashes fatally and restarts (due to a power outage, kernel panic, tripping over a cord or something), there is no mention of it in the log. It just shows that the system was started. Is there a tool that will show this in the log? With a message like "system was not shut down properly or had a fatal crash / kernel panic" when restarting? It is pretty easy to do, just have a lock file somewhere that is removed when the system shuts down gracefully and that is left when it is not. And mechanism that checks this when starting up. It would also be possible to tell when the crash occured, as you can update the lock file from time to time and when the systems dies, it cannot anymore.

Apr 18, 2011Trying to make sense of this Linux stuff, by trying to install Fedora 14. First impressions are it?s a parallel universe populated by those who hark back to the era of Windows 3.1 / DOS, and earlier, where command line instructions and messing around with .ini files was all the rage. Which might all be a great little hobby to go back to, being more 'at one, and intimate' with my machine and learning a new skill to take some pride in, but all it means so far is my patience is being really tested by needing to learn it all from scratch!
The installation guides seem to suggest that if your graphics card is not good enough then the installation will default to the text based one. Which is what happened in my case. I can get to the login prompt after the installation, but that's the point where it gets really frustrating in having my machine think it?s a mid 1980s Commodore 64 or something!! Never mind PEEK and POKE, I just want to THUMP or KICK it.
I read somewhere I should start X Start to start the GUI. Nope, x start or xstart doesn't do anything. I then read that only works if I had installed X Windows. Can't find where or how I install X Windows though! I then read, as I say, things default to purely text if your graphics card is not good enough, but then I can't find anything about what the minimum spec is. Seems odd that a card that can cope with Windows can't work with a system as basic as linux/fedora with its frustrating command line-intensive way of working.

Apr 13, 2011My laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 had suddenly go to a dark gray screen that will not take any kind of input other than holding to power button down for 5 seconds. I'm not running any new or odd programs just Firefox, Openofice writer, and Pidgin. When I turn the computer back on I do not see any kind of an error message. I'm looking for any advice that will help me find the cause of the problem.

Nov 12, 2010I am experiencing severe DNS delays today, so I tried to install DNSMASQ by following the instructions given on several pages on the web to make it function as a local DNS cache.
The installation was successful, and after editing the configuration files as instructed, I now have a working DNS cache on my computer.
However, it seems that the addresses are not cached for a long time ; for a given domain, the speedup lasts for a few minutes. If I try to access a previously visited domain once more after several minutes, a new (slow) external lookup is made.
Since websites' IP addresses are not changed every five minutes, would there be a way to tell DNSMASQ to keep the IPs in the cache for a long time (several hours at least) ?
This is very important for me because the DNS lag that I am experiencing makes external lookups last 10 to 20 seconds.

Aug 20, 2010I am in the process of creating a kickstart configuration file for some RedHat 5.5 and Centos 5.5 servers (Production and test respectively).I have googled about a bit but I cannot find a good list of the bare minimum packages required for a command-line system.If anyone knows how I can trim this list down anymore it would be much appreciated. The aim of this kickstart.cfg is to get the system booted to a bare minimum required to install Chef (Server management software). Chef will then setup Apache, Ruby on rails environment etc.
All this server will need to do is, from a static IP, Host a Ruby on rails app, send emails, send data to a server on the web, accept ssh and occasionally and connect to a SMB/CIFS share This list was taken from the anaconda-ks.cfg file after a RedHat install of what I thought was a pretty minimal system onto a VM but I noticed that cups, the avahi daemonsand gam_server are installed and running which I do not believe are needed for a pure web server.I know that these types of questions are hard to answer without a complete knowledge of the operating environment and what "minimum" is in this case ("@core only? but I wanted yum damnit!")

Since it doesnt show me OS Type as Fedora(while I do have RHEL, Ubuntu, OpenSUSE etc)I checked Other Linux 64 bits. and by default it took 384 MB. When I started installing it says insufficient memory and did the text mode installation. What is the minimum RAm I should select for GUI Installation.

Jun 6, 2011After working for about 15 years on MS Windows, I have decided to to change over to Linux. I have a current netbook with 1 GB RAM. The only work I would be doing on the netbook are:
1) Surfing Internet using Firefox browser.
I would avoid saving anything on my disk while browsing. If I need to open files, videos, then I would be opening them directly in the browser while I am connected to the internet.
2) I would be writing code in Java using Java Standard Edition (not the enterprise one).
Those Java programs may need to use the network, graphics, sound- actually the programs will need to use any available Java API/Package/methods available in the Sun distribution of Java.
Now, For the above to jobs, I want to install the bare minimum, smallest linux on my netbook. I mus mention taht I do not want any Linux package/program/library that will not be required for the above two jobs. To rephrase this, I want to have only those linux components that are absolutely necessary for the above two jobs (Surifng the internet with full power on Firefox, and developing Java programs which may use _any_ functionality that is provided by the Sun distribution of Java Standard Edition.

Fedora :: System Shutdown Only Logs Out
Feb 14, 2011I currently run kernel 2.6.34.7-66.fc13.i686 (sort of). When I select from the Gnome menu System -> Shutdown and select Shutdown from the dialog, my system only logs out, presenting me with the greeting screen. While this is a minor problem and I rarely shutdown my machine, it is mildly disconcerting.I have dropped back to 2.6.34.7-63.fc13.i686 and that shutdowns properly using this method. (Also, 2.6.34.7-61.fc13.i686 works properly). I can imagine that it might close some security issue in which an unauthorized user is able to halt the entire machine. Especially if this is something that will continue in future releases of the kernel.

I need to open an Ubuntu 10.04 VM in VMWare 7 and it needs to stay open for whole day for accessing some sites and connections.
I won't serve anything, just uses putty and sometimes firefox.
I run it on 256 MB but did anyone managed to run it under this. I don't know too much about linux and its deamons.
How can i disable them and which are useless for me ? for example i can see that evolution related deamon is running but i did not open it ever.

Jul 23, 2011Well it turns out my system has logged out more then once on its own. I had the system updated and upgraded from 7-3-11 and it did this about once a week. On 7-18-11 I did a full update and upgrade and it logged out a few times in a couple of hours. It does it while I am away and the system is in screen saver mode. I used my partition clone and restored the system back to 7-3-11. Has any one else ever had such an issue?

Debian Multimedia :: When Open Some Video On The Net The System Logs Out
Mar 20, 2011When i open some video on the net, the system logs out (especially when i open ..... video). I suspect its flash (current version is 10.02). Is there any way how to fix this? Or how to downgrade to minor version.
Another thing as well. By default i have GNOME version. Just installed the KDE full package from synpatic. when i try to log in with kde manager same like the flash, it logs me out to welcome screen.

Dec 3, 2010We have a backup program that works with HP's ultrium tapes that whenever it's failing it's sending an error to the root's system logs. Now if I run mutt as root I can see the system logs and it's very easy to pinpoint any backup error messages.
Is there any way to copy all these system messages to another user as well so that someone with no root access could run mutt as well and check for these logs daily?

Jun 3, 2011Running updated 11.04 on a older Dell Precision 360n. Been having random system freezes for the past month that requires a hard restart (REISUB doesn't work) each time. Sometimes the caps lock and scroll lock LEDs blink, other times not. sometimes it happens during boot, other times during normal usage. There hasn't been anything in any of the logs (except once, which I'll post below). This happened running 10.04 and 10.10 as well. I've run PC-check a few times and all hardware diagnostics have passed. Until today, i've been able to boot and run Trinity Rescue Kit 3.4 to mount the disk and examine the logs (and do backups), but now TRK won't boot and spews kernel panics when loading.

May 7, 2011i get file system errors on boot up. found logs in /var/logs but cant access them. second best thing i can do is to re-install debian but no one seems to want to say how thats done. my disk wont run in wine (some error i dont remember) so i cant use my CD /flashdrive to re-install.
1) i need to read the log files and try to fix the install
2) if i cant fix i need to know how to wipe the OS and do a fresh install

Jan 16, 2015I have a web server that hosts multiple websites. Am looking for an application that can be run on my workstation and makes it possible to watch Apache logs live.
It should have a tabbed interface. When I launch the application, it has to connect to my server and should automatically open all access.log and error.log files and display all changes in real time (similar to tail -f command).
Does anything like this exist?
I'm tired of logging in many times in Konsole and executing tail -f commands to see parallel logs.
