General :: Scrot Reveals Hidden Desktop Space...WTF?

Apr 14, 2011

I found this issue after trying to get my Conky up and running in Fedora 14(Xfce). Every time I started Conky, I would get nothing, but the default Conky would appear just fine. Well, I was messing around with scrot and I noticed that the screenshot appears to show other workspaces or somethinghe right of my current desktop. So I figured I'd bring up the default Conky but I changed the orientation to top_right. I then took another screenshot and sure enough, there was the Conky in limbo. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this an issue with Fedora, Xfce or something else?Pictures are said to be worth 1000 words, so hopefully the pictures included will explain this issue better than I.

Ubuntu :: Taking Screenshots With Scrot Every Minute?

Jul 12, 2010

I have an issue with crontab that I can't resolve even though I searched the web like crazy. I tried to create a new cron job for taking a screenshot automatically every minute with scrot using "crontab -e" like so...

Code:
* * * * * /usr/bin/scrot ~/screenshots/screen\%G-\%T.png > ~/log.txt

when I run it in my shell it does work fine and it seems to run with cron also because the log.txt file is modified every minute, however when I run it through cron the screenshots don't appear in the screenshots directory and nowhere else either.

Other jobs in the same crontab run very well. It doesn't seem to be a PATH issue because the paths are complete.

Software :: Using SCROT To Capture Portion Of Window?

Jan 22, 2010

Scrot supports capturing a portion of the screen by allowing the user to use the -s option. I need to use the command line.

So I installed xdotool to allow me from the command line to move my mouse, click buttons, type text, select my focus, etc...

I also built a bash script that uses scrot and xdotool that allows me to select the window that has a firefox web page displayed. Then I can position the mouse and do a right button click to position to a data entry box on the web page. Then I can use xdotool type "my text" to input the text into the input box. All this works very neatly.

My problem is the following:

The command "xdotool mousemove x y" does not move relative to the top left hand corner of the focused window. The command moves to the absolute x y screen location, not the relative window location.

This happens even though I use the command "xdotool windowfocus windowid" or command "xdotool windowactivate windowid" to specify which window I want to use (want in focus).

Does anybody know how to specify that the "xdotool mousemove x y" is to move relative to the upper left hand corner of the currently in focus window?

By the way, here is my bash script:

#!/bin/bash
# get window id
WIN_ID=`xdotool search --title MyWindow`
# activate window with title MyWindow

Ubuntu :: Desktop Hidden Files / Show On Them?

Aug 13, 2010

I created an image and then saved it to my desktop as *.jpg

It doesn't show on my desktop anywhere. However, when I click to upload from my desktop to a website or to 'insert' and attachment in my email program and browse to my desktop, it shows that it is on my desktop and all works fine.

I have a feeling the * is the problem in the name and I would happily rename it if I could only get to it from my desktop but I cannot at all.

Any ideas how I can fix this?

General :: Division Of Logical Memory Space In To User Space And Kernel Space

Jan 4, 2010

Logical Memory Space of 4GB is divided in to 3GB User Space and 1GB Kernel Space. Always. Correct?

1. How can we change it? (just changing value of PAGE_OFFSET is okay?)

2. If system have only 256MB of memory (embedded system) and suppose Kernel Modules eat away all the memory during boot. User space will be left will no memory. Is this case possible?

Fedora :: Hidden Disk Space Usage \ Can't Figure Out Where The Runaway Usage Is?

Dec 10, 2010

I'm running into a problem where my system is running out of disk space on the root partition, but I can't figure out where the runaway usage is. I've had a stable system for a couple of years now, and it just ran out of space. I cleaned some files up to get the system workable again, but can't find the big usage area, and I'm getting conflicting results.For example, when I do a df it says I'm using 44GB out of 58 GB:

Code:
[root@Zion ~]# df -h

Ubuntu :: Files On Desktop And Wanted To Put Them In A Hidden Folder?

Jul 23, 2010

I have a sort of strange dilemma.I had all these files on my desktop and I wanted to put them in a hidden folder. I put them all in a folder, then renamed that folder ".desktop" and tried to hide/unhide it with ctrl+h. It didn't work. So I moved it to my home folder. Didn't work there either, and I accidentally deleted it. Moved it out of the trash and back onto the desktop, but now it's no longer a folder. Now it's a file. I can't open it, since when I do, it says "Cannot display .desktop [return] The file is of an unknown type.

General :: Virtual Space Seen By Each New Process In User Space?

Jun 21, 2010

In a 32-bit system, max memory addressable is 4GB. Now Linux kernel does memory mapping division of 1GB for kernel address space and 3GB for user address space. That means 4GB of virtual address space is divided between kernel (1GB) and user (3GB).

Q1. All virtual mapping utilizes the available physical RAM without any division? I mean to say that if RAM is 512MB then a page in kernel space can lie any where RAM (leave aside old PCI dma accesses)? (How this fits to fact that kernel memory is non-pageble)

Q2. If a process is created in user space, it has visibility 4GB address space or 3GB address space?

I'm trying to look at a file and find 6 or more consecutive consonants (everything except a vowel). However I have a hidden $ character at the end of each line in the file. For some reason I can't reference to it in any of the pattern searching commands.

For example: grep '[^aeiouAEIOU$]{6,}' file| more

This command returns words that contain 5 consonants at the end (because it interprets the hidden $ as not a vowel). How can I make it ignore the hidden character? Or more specifically how do I refer to the hidden character in my pattern searches?
