General :: Saving Current Setup When Switching User On Centos?
Jul 15, 2010
i'm using centos 5 and i want to save my setup when switching the user.when i switched user from user1 to user2 and then i logged in user1 back without shutting down, i couldn't see any working window on user1. But since it's working on the CPU, i guess it's working but i cannot just see the window(such as terminal in my case) i was using. i have been using scientific linux which have "save current setup" when logging out. but centos seems not to have that check box!i want to know whether centos can contain the setup for each user when switching user.

I'm using gnome in a dual-head setup with individual desktops. Is there any way to "jump" to another monitor using the keyboard only? Now the only method I know is to move the mouse pointer to the another screen and click on something there. Can I do something like that without using the mouse?

When I reinstall my distro (MEPIS, for the last 2.5 years), making my new user account preserve all the old account's settings has always been a difficult and very messy process, especially if I have installed a new copy on another partition. (I'm doing that soon, so I have this copy as a backup until I have everything the way I want it on the new copy.) Most of my stuff gets saved, but not everything. The biggest problem is that, even if I select "preserve data in /home" in the MEPIS installer, my keyboard shortcuts become unusable (not completely erased) under odd circumstances. They're still listed in file /home/josh/kde/share/config/khotkeysrc, but they still can't be used, and I have to open hhotkeysrc and manually delete them and then reenter them in the menu editor (the K menu, by the way, gets completely overwritten).
I can't just overwrite the entire new user account with the old one; I've tried, and something goes wrong so that the new account can't be opened (probably because some important files are inaccessible--I can't tell which ones they become inaccessible).Anyway, is there a program that can preserve all the user account settings neatly for a new installation of the distro? I am supposing there is a program or at least a method, because I never hear others complaining about this problem. I probably don't know something I should know.

I would like to know how I stop the current window I am on following me when I switch workspace.for example, I have this web browser open whilst I am typing this, I press Ctrl+. (my shortcut to take me to the workspace to the right), and instead of taking me to what was a nice empty workspace on the right, it sweeps this web browser to it as well.I can't find a way to configure this to my liking, can anyone help?

user@host$ killall -9 -u user Will it definitely kill all processes owned by user (including forkbombs)?
No new processes is spawned to user from other users. No user's processes are in D-sleep and unkillable. No processes are trying to detect and ptrace or terminate this started killall (but they can ptrace or do other things with each other) There is ulimit that prevents too much processes (but killall is already started and allocated it's memory)
E.g. if killall will finish untampered and successfully is it 100% that no processes are left with this uid? If no, how to do it properly (with standard commands and no root access). Will SysRq+I definitely kill all things (even replicating)?

Half of my hard drive is an unused partition, which is formatted ext2 which is just temporal and has no specific intention of mine. This unused partition has its own swap area, which is also a temporal and not important.
So my HD is:
Now, I'd like installing Windows 7 using these sda2 and sda4 partitions without corrupting current Linux installation and its GRUB2 setting(I'd likt to reconfigure the GRUB2 after successfully installing the Windows image, for the dual-boot).

I am wondering if there is a basic tool out there that will work with graphics card powered by FOSS drivers that allows to adjust resolution (and configure secondary monitors) and then save that configuration so it can automatically be restored next time the system starts up.

I'm trying to take my current windows7 (x64) setup and make it into a dual-boot setup with slackware 13.0 (x32) and am hitting a brickwall. I guess I would like to know if I can salvage the situation without formating my windows drive. I fully intend to, but I had hoped to not do it this month. I'd like to get dual boot going so I can master it and acquire all the files/drivers I'll want and then format and do it 100% right next time.
Currently I have windows setup on a 3x 500gb Raid0 onboard array which itself has been flawless. After I shrunk my current partition size to give me about 25gb of free space I proceeded to setup Linux, and I was unable to perform the cfdisk portion for partitioning the array for Linux.
I tried using cfdisk:
/dev/hdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)
/dev/sdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)
I even attempted to locate with: cat proc/partition and tried using cfdisk on every device it located. It always said it was either an unknown partition table and should I start at zero, or bad partition. I was of course too concerned over my windows setup (which has almost 1tb of stuff I have not backed up) to go any further into the unknown.
PS: I have used Slackware before, back at 8.1, 10, and even a very brief interlude at 12.0, this is my first attempt on this computer however with 13.0, it is currently running fine on my laptop and my PS3 (Laptop is even dual booting 7/Slack13. Albeit without raid)
Phenom 9850
M2N-SLI Deluxe (Nvidia AM2)
4x1gb of 1066 kingston hyperX
3x500gb WD Caviar Black Sata2 3.0

I'm trying to create a live CD of my current CentOS installation. I want it to be almost like a backup, so whenever I want to copy my current installation to another computer I would simply install from my custom live CD.I know this is possible, and I found some resources on the net, but they all seem to only create a minimal version of CentOS; I want to have all the current functionalities available to me at present, including all of my development functionalities, Apache and samba settings, etc.

I installed KDE 4.3.5 on my existing Gnome desktop and i have two users using the computer. Now from Gnome I am accustomed to switch between session very easy and the sessions continue to run. If I use the Switch option from KDE it just looks my screen and does not switch. Is it possible that I miss some programs? I installed it with Yast and used the group option. I am pretty sure that I missed something during the installation.

My normal prompt looks like: username(at)ubuntu + current directory. (Odd format, it doesn't really look like that, but I was told I needed 15 posts to post an URL).Whenever I change user with "su username" (at least when changing from root to normal user), this prompt completely disappears. All it says on the left in front of the input "$". Also the history doesn't work, and the tab key doesn't complete anything, but rather acts as the normal tab in an editor. do I fix this? It is very annoying. Sorry for the stupid question, but I've searched around for an answer, finding none.

I'm trying to watch TV shows off of ABC.com, ABC.com is sending back the following warning:
Code:
Platform not supportedYou appear to be using an unsupported operating system or Web browser. In order to use our video player, we require:Windows XP/Vista with Internet Explorer 6+, Firefox 3
Mac - Firefox 3+, Safari 3+
I think that this is bogus, and I probably need to switch my user agent so that it shows the correct version of firefox, but shows my OS as Windows XP/Vista or Mac. Here is the output of about:config showing all of the user agent strings:
Code:
general.useragent.extra.firefox;Firefox/3.5.7
general.useragent.locale;en-US
general.useragent.security;U
[code]...
As I understand it, these strings get assembled into the user agent header, which looks a little bit like this:
Code:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.7) Gecko/20100106 Firefox/3.5.7 I pulled this from Wireshark, after changing the user agent values above... obviously the changes that I'm making in Firefox aren't affecting what's going out over the wire. Right now, I'm in 'press and guess' mode... if someone can give me a better idea of how user agent strings are actually set in Firefox, what the individual values are, I might have a slightly better shot at figuring this out. This is, of course, only the first part of the problem. If ABC is using something proprietary to send out their video, I may still be out of luck...

we're using Network Manager with vpnc plugin (cisco vpn).According to our IT policy, we'd like to prevent the users from saving the password.I've been trying to set the value via gconf as mandatory, but the setting is blatantly ignored:system/networking/connections/1/vpn/ipsec-secret-type...I set it on "ask" and mandatory.I'm quite sure that's the wrong key.

I have a remote virtual server for a few websites, it's running on Fedora Core release 6 (Zod). I want to setup an FTP user so I can have someone do some work for me. He only needs very limited access. I have searched for help and thought I found out what I needed to do, but when I try to test the connection, after the password is sent I get the message "530 Login incorrect", followed by "Critical Error", "Could not connect to server". (I am using FileZilla for my FTP client) Below is what I did to add the user
Code: useradd -d /var/www/vhosts/mywebsite.com/httpdocs/thisisit -s /sbin/nologin myuser
"thisisit" is the name of the directory I want to give access to and "myuser" is the user I am adding. I use passwd myuser to add a password. I've tried -s /dev/null also (to prevent this user having shell access) but it's the same. The worse thing is, I did a similar thing last year for a customer so he could upload images to my site. That login works fine. I have looked at the passwd file and both users seem to be setup the same, yet the new user does not work. What am I overlooking? The two entries in my passwd file are The one that doesn't work
myuser:x:10025:10025::/var/www/vhosts/mywebsite.com/httpdocs/thisisit/:/dev/null And below the use I created lat year that DOES work. mycustomer:x:10008:10008::/home/ftp/mycustomer/:/dev/null

Hello, I'm trying to set up a read only FTP user; basically, they have the ability to browse a particular images folder and download, but not write (or delete accidentally). I've got it set up so the FTP user logs in directly to the folder, so I'm good with that; but they still have write permissions. We have an application built in PHP that copies image uploads to this folder; it also resizes them in the same folder. So in addition to the main FTP user (me) who needs write access to this folder, whatever the Apache/PHP user is (not sure?) also needs write access. Is there a simple way to affect read/write permissions on a user level?

I have an external USB drive that is NTFS. It mounts fine under my account and my wife's, but only if I fully shut-down the computer between switching. While switching users or logging out then in with a different account it will not mount the drive. I am not sure what to do... but we both access data from the same drive.

When switching users or logging out and then back in, the unity desktop will be shifted to the right, so that the clock, power button, etc. is off-screen. This does not happen every time, but seems to be about 50% of the time.It looks to be shifted about the width of the toolbar on the left, so that there is a blank column the width of the toolbar, then the toolbar. So, maybe some screen position data is not being reset at log out

I have a mercurial repository on a secure server, to which I want to grant secure access to an external user.
I added for him a user account and publickey ssh authentication so that now he could push/pull changesets via ssh.
My question is: how can I make this new user account completely disabled from doing anything or accessing any data on the server other than accessing the repository? E.g. he shouldn't even have the possibility to enter an interactive shell session.
