General :: Password Protection For Installing New Software?
Aug 7, 2011
I have an acer aspire one running linpus
Generally I'm very happy with it apart from not being able to run some of the software I use but I do like the linux system.
Now, though, I find that it is progressively holding me back as more and more things I want to do require a change that involves the password protected access and I don't know it.
I tried 000000 and 111111 I don't know if anybody knows another default password. It maybe I did change it but I have no idea what to.
In order to save power,I want to leave the default(blank) screensaver active,in case I forget to close my monitor when the computer is running. However, the screensaver is,by default, password protected and I would like to disable this annoying feature(which is,anyway, useless for me).If I go to System>Preferences>Screensaver and uncheck "Lock screen when scrensaver is active",will this remove password protection from the screensaver?
is there a way to make a password key-ring for a list of specifications, specifically; all the applications relating to preferences. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, I'm the only user, I disabled all login password requirements because they were annoying me and I'm cool with anybody using any of my applications as long as they aren't capable of changing my system in any way. Some of the applications I would like to be on the list include the terminal, the network connections preferences, the keyboard preferences. I wan't to be prompted for a password before opening these programs
I use Firefox's built-in password saving utility, which is great. However, for some Web sites, I never get the option to save the password. Googling indicates that Firefox somehow gives Web sites a means of disabling password-saving.
How do I disable this "feature"? (Preferably without installing a plug-in.) It's irritating. I should get to decide whether or not I want passwords saved, not some stupid Web Master who thinks he knows what is best for the world.
I don't know if this is Just my Machine, or not. But here is it:
Ubuntu 10.01 Acer Aspire 7740
When the computer is locked. I can smiply go to switch users. when the list of users logins are shown all i have to do is click on my user name and it allows me into my account without typing in a password. I can lock the computer manually or wait for it to time out it doesn't matter. the switch users method allows me to bypass the password protection.
I was recently upgrading from Ubuntu 10.4 to 10.10 when with 14 minutes remaining on my install it froze and quit upon a restart it wouldn't boot correctly.
I decided to put 10.10 on a cd and it boots to a black screen asking for a login then password, login enters alright but the password won't show any characters being entered. Hitting enter results in "pc-login incorrect".
I'm using suse linux. Its new one to me. Without using any password I am using this linux. If I want to install a software it shows that the software is read only. I was used the guide to install the software but it ask me that to give password in terminal. If I enter in to account setting to create a new password. It asked the old password. Without the password the system was booting. How can I set the password?
I'd like to burn DVD (my pictures and some data) with a possible strong protection mechanismus, to prevent of DVD media copying and not pictures data copying. Which program can I use under Linux?
I have couple of USB modules. They are full of unwanted Windows files.I want to remove everything and format it.The message is it is write protected. The command fdisk -l gives the following:
Disk /dev/sdc: 2008 MB, 2008416256 bytes 57 heads, 56 sectors/track, 1228 cylinders Units = cylinders of 3192 * 512 = 1634304 bytes
Does rootkit copy protection pose a problem in Linux? I own only one CD with rootkit (XCP), and was wondering if I should avoid playing it on this Linux system. (I know Sony offered to take back the CDs and exchange them for rootkit-free copies, but I never cared to go to the trouble.) (It's not particularly important, because all I have to do is play this CD in my DVD player.)
The lock on the card broke off and I tried using tape in that groove, but is too thick for my camcorder. I navigated /media > Context Menu > Properties > Permissions tab > File access, and chose Read and write, but this didn't allow my camcorder to record with the card. Unless there's a way to unlock it with software, I'll try switching the insides with the casing of another. I just want to know what is the best type of SD card or Mini SD adpter to do the trick, i.e. what has the best lock.
SuSE SLES10, 32 bit. I have an app which crashes with general protection often.
There is message every time in /var/log/messages: 2010-10-22T08:49:49.350476+02:00 HostName kernel: ProgramName[28023] general protection rip:404575 rsp:7fffc5656270 error:0
How do I establish relation between this message and source code? Error was observed on another host where some tests were running, now license is expired and I can't get more info nor core dump. I have to investigate what I have and try to reproduce it locally. Unfortunately original binary was stripped. Now I prepared non-stripped version. Does it has the same addresses for function as original? Is it possible to use symbol information for finding where RIP points to?
I have Ubuntu 11.04. My system exceeds by far the recommendations for the game. The game is from 2001 and has very low system specs, so that's not the problem. Other games run fine, I have 3d acceleration etc. The game installs, but when I try to run it, it gives me the following error:
I really love that game and couldn't do without it. Another problem, not games related. My Ubuntu desktop freezes completely sometimes if screen is idle for a few minutes. A blank, white full screen appears and nothing I do can get me back to normal desktop. Only solution is Restart.
I am an absolute Linux Beginner who is being required to do a bit of admin work because the boss just fired the old linux admin. Unfortunately, one of our employees cannot remember her password to her email account and as such I need to reset it on our linux server. What I want to check is that this email account is actually a linux user account and I simply will reset the password for it using the passwd command from the root login. Is that correct?
brand new 2 Ubantu & set up standard Ubantu compartment accessed via 1 user name only and password. 1st few times all good but now suddenly, unexpectedly password declared invalid. Had written down password so it is correct & not entry error. Not know how to reset password or bypass 'username/password log on screen' Am on an Acer 5542G with windows 7 home premium.
I have fresh install of SuSe11.2 64x My software updater applet tells me there are about 50 or so updates required. I check all and then click install, get prompted for admin password but then nothing happens except the software updater window closes and if I hover my mouse over the applet it tells me it is updating.
however hours later and nothing appears to have happened. If I click the updater applet all the selected updates still appear in the update window. I have added all the standard repos and have network connectivity. I'm a bit baffled here - it worked perfectly fine on my last 11.2 on the same machine.
How can I turn off the Authication Password when installing new hardware. I am the only user and only download from trusted sites but I'm continually asked to authenticate with my password.
I get stuck at the part where it says Youll need to use the MySQL root password. Then, in your database administration screen for MySQL, set the password for the new MySQL user horde to something nicely random and hard to guess; keep a momentary record as youll need it below.
It is really frustraing to get stuck at something so simple as installing horde imp on centos. how to get it installed on a CENTOS 5.x system ?
Is there a way to change password to value same as the previous password? I know this is a security flaw, but would like to know however. when I try this:
I have installed Ubuntu Server 10.10 in Virtual Box in order to evaluate it for a project.I have installed Gnome and can log in fine using my password. However, whenever I am prompted for my password when doing anything SUDO I am told my password is incorrect, starting Synaptic, for example
Being used to the pc i have always used resource draining virus protection programs. now that i have switched to ubuntu 10.10 i wanna kno is there rly any need for virus protection on my linux?
I'm setting up a fileserver for a client which will host their client invoices. They're looking for a system whereby invoices can be converted from RTF to PDF with copy protection (no right click / copy-paste). In addition to this I'm thinking of using a one-way hash to verify document integrity.
Are there any command-line utilities for Linux which allows adding this kind of copy protection / DRM to pdf documents?
I'm using Debian 6 to host a website (with apache2) and a game server. But because of attacks to my server, my hosting company have now set it offline.
These are the two logs that they provided (I replaced all IPs): Direction IN Internal ***.***.***.***
I've been attempting to back up my collection of DVDs to an external hard drive using Brasero. I've successfully ripped many of the DVDs to ISO with Brasero, but am now wondering if it'd be possible to burn these back to other discs if I bought them in the future. In other words, does Brasero leave copy protection in place and just bypass it when ripping to ISO, or does Brasero remove copy protection all together leaving me with an decrypted ISO?
I have an external hard drive that is actually a 2.5" HDD from a laptop, in a hard drive enclosure. Now I have an issue, because the hard drive had linux Ubuntu installed on it, the hard drive is write protected. So I cant copy any files. I need to copy about 12GB of pictures from it, to my current comp, so I can format it. Does anyone know how I can remove the write protection so I can copy or delete files?
