i have made a shortcut on my desktop with ls command.how do i make the shortcut open with leafpad? with right click i can se it is set to executable file, and only when i click open with i can see leafpad

The visual file manager Midnight Commander has the menus Left, File, Command, Options and Right.
Is there any shortcut key to open these menus?
I've been happily using jaunty until yesterday. After reinstalling kubuntu to natty everything works fine except leafpad:
nick@rilmir:~$ sudo leafpad
[sudo] password for nick:
nick@rilmir:~$ leafpad
Segmentation fault
nick@rilmir:~$
So, when I run it as root, it works, but when I run it as ordinary user, it segfaults.Where do I even start looking?
When running leafpad as root, it saves its options, but when running it as regular user, it doesn't. Why? I have to configure it every time I close leafpad and start again.

I know how to set up a keyboard shortcut to open a program like libreoffice. Is there a way to make another keyboard shortcut to open direct a libreoffice file (.odt, .odb, etc).
does anyone know how to do this? i'd open it up through alt+f2 and nautilus but i don't know its location or any other means.

It takes two clicks on a program icon to open the program when the dash is open, and only one click when the dash is closed. Just enough to keep me from getting into a rhythm.Hitting the super key twice will open the launcher and close the dash, but only if you don't hit the super key twice too quickly. Is there some way I can configure unity so the super key (or some other key) opens the launcher but does not open the dash?

the above command is what i want to be executed at time of running the custom application launcher. if i paste the command in a terminal, it will show the output for 5 secs and then terminates... that's almost what i want. what i exactly want is that, i want it to work like when i click on the shortcut launcher, it should open a terminal and then exectues that command, show the output for 5 sec, pause, and then exits the teriminal.
When I assign a keyboard shortcut to open the main menu, it always opens the "Applications menu" by default. Is there a way to make the keyboard shortcut open the "System menu" by default?

As an absolute novice I am finding it difficult to understand Linux. There seem to be FAR too many variables to get a grip on how thing work. One of my gripes however is that Thunderbird uses a number of shortcut keys that have no secondary key requirements, for example, "Mark as Read" is M. Not ControlM. Just M. Worse, "Mark as Junk" is J. Which means I sometimes inadvertently mark messages as Junk.
How can I customize Thunderbird's shortcuts so, for example, "Mark as Junk" is ControlJ?
On Linux, the Ctrl-[ key combination appears to be equivalent to hitting the Esc key. I would like to define Ctrl-[ as a shortcut in emacs but I am unable to because by the time the keystroke gets to emacs it looks like the Esc key was pressed. /Tomcat_Dir/bin
and once I am in the folder I enter:
./Startup.sh
And to stop the server, I navigate to the same directory and enter:
./Shutdown.sh
I was wondering if there was a way in Linux to alias the above described process, so that from any location in the filesystem, I can simply type in something like
StartTomcat or StopTomcat to perform the Startup and Shutdown of the web-server?
I installed opera10 and I can start it from a shell script from the opera folder but when i try to make a desktop shortcut it does not work. Either from xfce or by right clicking and choosing to send it to the desktop as a shortcut.
I did not install opera system wide, only under one user. Do I need to set some kind of path or link or something?
using eclipse Galileo on top of Ubuntu 9.10. Normally I launch eclipse by using terminal but I would like to know way to create desktop short cut to launch eclipse.
