General :: Nouveau Without KMS ?
Jul 29, 2011
I have nomodeset when I boot my kernel, as I want to switch between nouveau and nvidia proprietary drivers within a session.
However, nouveau won't load, complaining that kms isn't enabled (xorg.log excerpt):
Here is the lsmod:
Am I missing something or isn't it possible to have nouveau without KMS? I have done a bit of searching, and everything I find points me back to enabling kms in the kernel.

I have tried everything I can think of to install the nouveau driver, which is the only one I can trust on my system with the Geforce 8800 card I received as a gift. I tried Nvidia direct download drivers before and it was impossible to alter the screen resolution and the "fixes"/patches were not able to correct that fact. And removing it led to my having to reinstall my system both times. So I'm done with those.
I realized that I could use the nouveau driver when I realized that the second OS on my dual boot system worked perfectly with it. It has the nouveau driver onboard. That OS is Ubuntu 10.04, btw. Also the system I want to install this driver on requires a screen resolution of 1280x960. The Ubuntu is at 1280x1024 for some reason, with the same monitor, it works.
How do I get my stable debian system to download the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau and meet all its dependencies without breaking my system? I even tried reloading Synaptic with the highest available software, but I still could not get the driver to install. What am I doing wrong? Is it just impossible to install this particular driver on my system? And if there's an old version of it I am willing to try that too.

I want to install the Nvidia drivers because I suspect nouveau to be responsible for some system freezes. It seems that I need to disable nouveau before I can get nvidia working. How do I do this?

Now that nVidia is up and running, I'm curious to do a comparison with Nouveau. I there an EASY way to do this? Like a simple on/off switch? Major system/kernel changes are not an acceptable option. If it can't be easily done, I'll just stick with nVidia.

this may be asking too much (especially from leigh123, 'cause i know you're working hard), but i've lost track of the current status of the great nvidia driver vs. nouveau driver debate, and what we can hope to see in f13 in about 20 days. could you provide or point us to a layman's summary of what graphics capabilities we can expect with a "default" configuration when we bring up f13?
in particular, can we expect nouveau to provide 3-d for f13 (or in the near future)? nvidia install guides, leigh123, but despite your best efforts, the procedures seem to be getting more involved as time goes on, not less (and not noticably more reliable, either). between graphics card drivers and flash plugins fighting firefox (not to mention adobe fighting videos and hulu) it's discouraging to actually lose capabilities that were once available when upgrades are made.

I have a machine running FC 13 and a GeForce 210 Graphics card. I'm running the 2.6.33.3-85 kernel (if I use the newer kernels like 2.6.34.7-61, and 2.6.34.7-56, the X server won't even start; that was the subject of a different thread which didn't get answered). After a few hours, the screen is displayed in a disorganized state: each quadrant is displayed in the wrong space, and the X server won't respond to mouse movements (this isn't a screensaver). This is different from a previous problem where the X server simply hangs after an hour of so when I use GUI programs (that was also the subject of a different thread which didn't get answered). I think I'm running the Noeveau video driver, but not sure.

During boot I get a message along the lines of "nouveau 0000:00:0d.0 misaligned reg 0x0060081D". I then get dumped into emergency mode. This has happened before on this box, then went away with one of the F-15 upgrades, and has now returned.
What's frustrating is that I tested F15 at both the Alpha and Beta stages and didn't have this issue with the install, only after updating.. And the KDE Live spin loads w/o major issue suggesting that it is a software issue. I've tried two earlier kernels to no avail and don't know what to try next.

The problem with X not starting up started after I upgraded kernel from 2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.i686 which is what the FC15 came with. Before that I had X, without installing the nvidia.com driver (whatever came with the stock FC15-XFCE spin).I tried booting the old kernel and at first it worked but X again would not run. Now, after, above operations (reinstall of kernel-devel + kernel headers and all dependencies like glibc-common, glibcs-headers, dkms, gcc..) booting the old kernel does not work anymore: the framebuffer animation of the Fedora logo fillingup freezes at some point almost at the end; HD LED blinking hard. Maybe this means fsck is running and I need to give it more time..? I'll leave it booting when I go for lunch and see how it goes...

I've experienced the great functionality that nouveau gives me, but am a bit disappointed that it cannot support 3D acceleration. I play a few games so this is a requirement.I don't want to switch completely back to the NVIDIA driver because it breaks my brightness control keys on my laptop, and it isn't as fast and responsive as nouveau. Is there a way to have nouveau run by default, but when I launch a game in a separate X server it would load the NVIDIA driver?

I installed the nVidia 3rd party driver before removing the Nouveau Driver, this means that when my computer is done booting i'll just have a black screen, being able to do nothing. Can i somehow solve this using a live CD? or is there a simpler way? Ubuntu can't boot in recovery mode neither, so it kinda sucks. Anyway, i'd like someone to tell me how to do this.

howto reset nouveau configuration in fedora 14
I was building and testing custom kernels and somehow I managed to get the display configuration messed up so that when the computer boots up gets to starting the nouveau driver it displays garbage on the display. The boot up continues and I can login from another computer using ssh.
How do I reset the display configuration (or fix this problem)?
I have added nomodeset to the kernel parameters and the vesa drivers do work but I want the hi-res nouveau back without having to re-install f-14.

I've started playing around with debian 6 stable, and was just wondering if its worth it to go to the trouble of removing nouveau, or if it will handle everything well enough. I use my laptop for a little bit of gaming (older games) under wine, all the basic email/web browsing/writing stuff, some photo editing under gimp, movies/music, and a very little bit of Blender work. Will Nouveau handle all this well enough, or should I use the proprietary nvidia driver?

i have jsut installed the nouveau driver and my fans are all running at full speed, making the computer very noisy. i have read two wikis about nouveau fan management but i cant understand a letter. i was looking for a more simple guide/wiki for doing this. from what i have read i need to enable PWM support in the kernel or I2C.We will attempt to briefly stop each fan using the pwm controls. The program will attempt to restore each fan to full speed after testing. However, it is ** very important ** that you physically verify that the fans have been to full speed after the program has completed.

I have installed debian jessie stable and would like to use hardware decoding with the nouveau driver. I have tested with the propietary nvidia 340.65 driver and MPV and successfully enabled hardware decoding. However, there seems to be a frame sync issue with mutter and nvidia that I want to avoid. I've followed the instructions for enabling hardware decoding with nouveau here, hURL..., but haven't had success. What I've done so far is install jessie stable, run updates, install mplayer2, mpv, mesa-vdpau-drivers, and follow the previously mentioned guide. Mplayer2 throws an error about not finding the proper codec. MPV at least attempts to play the video but promptly freezes the system so that I can't recover without rebooting. URL....

I'd like to run a real-time kernel with the latest linux-rt patch, for 2.6.33. Incidentally, the .33 kernel was the first to include the Nouveau driver, and seeing that I cannot get the proprietary NVidia driver to compile --the RT patch really messes things up and the patches for nv-linux.h out there all seem incomplete-- I thought it would be a good idea to switch to Nouveau and save me from additional headaches.
I'm running sid, and as you certainly know, the Nouveau driver has been backported to the stock Debian kernel, 2.6.32-5-686. It works very well, all I had to do was change my xorg.conf with this line : Driver "nouveau".
However, when I boot my new 2.6.33-rt kernel, Xorg stops here :
[skipping a lot of stuff that seems to work ok]
(II) LoadModule: "nouveau"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/nouveau_drv.so
(II) Module nouveau: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 1.7.7, module version = 0.0.15
[Code]....
So what is so different about the backport to 2.6.32 ? How come the DRM lib, or whatever it is, doesn't work with 2.6.33 ?
I just thought of something, I'll try compiling my 2.6.33 kernel without the -rt patch and I'll let you know.

I just wanted to check, I'm using nouveau on Fedora 12 with the latest updates and each time I wake the machine from suspend, the fan on my XFX 8800GT goes to full speed and stays there. I've read some nouveau stuff and they say that nouveau doesn't control the fan speed, so I think the card is running in a safety mode after wake up where it runs the fan at full speed to be safe. The only suggestion I saw for fan speed and nouveau was to use nvclock to manually adjust the fan but that sounds dangerous to me. I think I'll just go to the closed rpmfusion driver then if this is the case.

I am running F12. With prior kernels - 2.6.31.9-174.fc12.i686 or before - I could simply rename the nouveau.ko driver to nouiveau.ko.bad. Then the kernel would load the nv driver instead, and everything worked great. FWIW: adding rdblacklist="nouveau" to the kernel params in grub.conf didn't seem to do anything.
On a recent update, a new kernel was added: 2.6.31.12-174.2.19.fc12.i686. I did the same rename trick as before, but this time the kernel still loaded the nouveau driver, and then X failed to load. So I had to fall back to the older kernel.
Is there a way to keep nouveau from loading with the newest kernel (ie, the one above)? And also, is there a way to keep nouveau from loading for any new kernels?

In the past I've played around with OpenGL development using the Mesa library. I have F13 installed now and would like to further explore OpenGL, but am trying out the default Nouveau/Gallium3d setup. As I understand Gallium3d is intended to replace Mesa3d so I'm at a loss as to what packages need installing to provide the header files and such needed to build OpenGL applications as a search for Gallium turns up nothing in the repos.

Just downloaded the x86_64 iso, copied it to my USB stick and added a grub4dos entry for direct booting.
Code:
title Fedora 15 x86_64
find --set-root /linux/fedora64.iso
map /linux/fedora64.iso (hd32)
map --hook
chainloader (hd32)
[Code].....
While it does mention nouveau, and I do use Nvidia graphics (PCIe GT 240) I believe the cause may be something else. Googling around leads me to a couple of forum threads that seem to relate to the core series of Intel processors, but I'm at a loss. I've also searched this forum however the search seems to either bring up every result under the sun and non seem to apply or no results at all. I know the card's supported as Ubuntu works flawlessly. I also tried booting in safe graphics mode, however the exact same thing happens.
I doubt using a USB stick in this manor would cause this problem, but if you suggest it i'll install from physical media.
I would post logs, however the shell it drops to seems to be severly limited (lacking reboot, even).

I have Fedora 15 installed in my PC and I use it both for gaming and work. Now the open source nouveau driver was working fine, until I had to install the nvidia driver so that I could play torcs, as I was unable to get good graphics in nouveau. Now, when using the nvidia driver, the gnome shell has become too slow and sometimes unworkable, though games run good. Is there any way so that I can use both the drivers and switch between them when needed (say use nvidia when gaming and nouveau while at work) without uninstalling and reinstalling them?
PS: when I boot up, the grub shows two options, one is the fedora with latest kernel and other is the old kernel. Is there a possible way that I use nouveau with old kernel and nvidia in the new kernel? This will really help in switching games and work.

After installing 11.3, I realised that my graphic driver is not working as desired. I have a Compaq CQ60-430SA laptop with an NVIDIA 8200M graphics card. Earlier with 11.2, I had some proprietary NVidia drivers and my graphics were smooth. However, I am not getting the same performance with Nouveau...
As can be seen from the screen clipping below, the images especially in the preview mode and the icons look jarred (highlighted in red). I have no complains with the video but the images and icons do look shabby at times and therefore I want to switch over to the proprietary NVidia drivers.

Desktop effects are not enabled and in system settings there is the following message "Desktop effects are not available on this system due to the following technical issues: Required X extensions (XComposite and XDamage) are not available."
The nouveau driver is installed. Peering at /etc/X11/xorg.conf I get three pieces of information
- driver ="nv"
- composite ="off"
- threats of war, famine, death and the other one if I edit the file by hand
I tried Xorg -configure and tested the result as it prompts, but that file seemed to contain errors
I can't find anything in YaST to edit the file
- is "nv" correct?
Apart from backing up xorg.conf (which I have) and firing up a text editor to change "off" to "on" does anyone have any more intelligent suggestions?

I would use the nouveau driver but the color hue seems to be slightly off. Is there any way to adjust the hue for the driver in real time(I don't want to have to change values in Xorg.conf the stop x, restart x and see if it worked). For example the proprietary nvidia drivers have the color settings in nvidia-settings.

My laptop is a Dell XPS 1340, it contains an integrated 9400M, and a discrete G210m. In trying to get vgaswitcheroo working with these cards, it seemed that every time I tried to switch outputs, my computer would freeze.
Code:
cd /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo
sudo chmod 777 switch
echo DIS > switch # Same with DDIS, same with OFF It seems like what would happen if vgaswitcheroo turned off the driver (nouveau) powering the card on PCI bus 3 (the 9400M), and attempted to turn on the driver powering the G210m, which doesn't exist.. I think? Can somebody confirm?

Code:
[ 7.847619] [drm] nouveau 0000:00:0d.0: ======= misaligned reg 0x0060081D ===
[ 7.847624] [drm] nouveau 0000:00:0d.0: ======= misaligned reg 0x0060081D ===
[ 8.651603] [drm] nouveau 0000:00:0d.0: unknown connector type: 0xff!! ===
Any insignt into what may be causing this would be well appreciated.
It may be also worth noting that I dont see the grub screen. My monitor reports "out of range" I also did have ubuntu server 10.10 on here previously which installed without issue. (It wasnt actually being used for anything) I'm currently trying a reinstall hoping the errors will go away but any info would be much appreciated.

I need to use the proprietary NVIDIA driver instead, but it can't install while this is active. I'm working off a fairly fresh install anyway, so I can reinstall debian if the option to not install nouveau is present somewhere during the install process. Or, is there an easy way to get rid of Nouveau from my current install altogether?
