Ubuntu :: 16gb Pen Drive. Can't Partition More Than 1gb

Feb 27, 2010

I've been trying to partition my USB pen drive but for some reason it won't make a partition any bigger than 1 gig. The reason I formatted it was for compatibility with a friends Windows computer that wouldn't recognise it while it was NTFS (so I tried FAT16, but it still wouldn't recognise it for some strange reason.)

Anyway, after partitioning it to FAT, I partitioned it back to NTFS and shortly after tried to put Ubuntu onto it using unetbootin. During the writing process, Ubuntu locked up and I had to hard reset. (even the reisub trick did nothing) After restarting, I noticed the pen drive was showing as only 1gb big.

I don't really know if the crash caused it, because it might have been 1gb after I had reformatted to NTFS (I just didn't check).

I've since reformatted and repartitioned it using ext3/4, ntfs, FAT and it's the same every time. Also, I've tried to use unetbootin again on the 1gig partition, and it will work, but if I try to boot up off it on my netbook, it says "Missing operating system" and then boots off the hard drive.

Lastly, when I do format it, there doesn't seem to be any kind of permissions on the pen drive until I run chown on it. Then I can write to it normally.

This is a really strange problem.. I'm almost inclined to think the pen drive might just be broken and I'll need to take it back to the shop. (Withdrawing any information about the whole repartitioning it..)

I'm using gparted on 9.10 if it's relevant.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Creative Zen 16GB - Transferring Album Art?

Jul 20, 2010

I've tried for some time now to get my Zen 16GB working properly with Ubuntu 10.04. I've tried Rhythmbox and this works for mp3s but album art is not transferring. I have latest 0.13 Rhythmbox and now at leat the mp3's go in directories under Music, but the .alb file is put a root and not ar is displayed.

I have tried gnomad2 and the latest (2.9.4?) crashes with 10.04 when reading the Zen. I can't drag and drop in nautilus and the it is connected as gphoto and the tags are not copied over. So, for all you Zen users.. how are you trandfering mp3's (with album art!) over to your Zen's?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Borked 16gb Usb Drive As A Boot Stick

Feb 5, 2010

I decided to use my 16gb usb drive as a boot stick for a new opensuse install by doing what the doc said to do i.e. "dd if=USBdrive of=ISO bs=4M" which worked great and all, but now I want the drive to do something else besides act like a cd with openSUSE on it. I can't figure out how to delete or write anything to it, because it's now read-only. Remounting hasn't worked but it's possible i'm not understanind how the mount command works, but I have tried "mount -rw /USB /MOUNTPLACE" and also with a couple of different filesystem types like usbfs & vfat.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Mounting A 16GB SDHC Card On 11.3 Laptop ?

Jan 5, 2011

I have an HPDV7 running 11.3.

I have a new 16GB SDHC memory card.

It is formatted FAT-32 LBA

When I plug the the card into the DV7's internal MMC/SD card slot, it automounts as /dev/mmcbkl0p1.

I can then access files (camera images) on the card with Dolphin, etc.

When I plug the card into an external card reader(USB interface), automount fails and I can see a long string of messages from dmesg. It is attempting to mount it as /dev/sdd, I see numerous I/O errors as it attempts to read various sectors.

The card reader is a Kingston FCR-HS219/1.

The 16GB SDHC card in the Kingston card reader combo works on my WinXP machine, so (apparently) the combo does work.

A 2GB SD card (FAT16) in the Kingston reader works on both WinXP and the HPDV7 11.3 laptop.

General :: Mount A File System (/dev/sdb) As Ext3 (rw,acl,user_xattr)?

Jul 15, 2009

I'm trying to mount a second hard drive as a ext3 (rw_acl,user_xattr). I type the ff.:

# mkfs.ext3 -c /dev/sdb1(it seems to create a file system from this 2nd HD)

then type:

# mount -v /dev/sdb1 / type ext3 (it seems to mount it)

But when I check the ext3 systems with typing:

# mount -t ext3 (to check the list of ext3 devices, it gives me this)
/dev/sda1 on / type ext3 (rw,acl,user_xattr)
/dev/sda2 on /home type ext3 (rw,acl,user_xattr)
/dev/sdb1 on / type ext3 (rw)

How can I make /dev/sdb1 on type ext3 as (rw,acl,user_xattr) as the others?

General :: Mount NTFS Partition Deeper In File System With Fstab?

Mar 15, 2010

I'm dual booting with Windows 7 and would like to have my windows 7 user folder mount when I boot.

After some looking around I edited /etc/fstab to add the following line:

This works. But it mounts the windows partition from the root level. I'd like to just mount C:UsersFHSM (/Users/FSHM) to /mnt/windows.

I'm trying to get it so that when I click on the windows drive I get my windows user folder instead of having to click through from C: to get to it.

I'm the only user on this system but if I created a second windows user would my home folder mount for that person too or does setting the user ID prevent that from happening?

General :: Mount A Hard Drive With Pre-existing File System And Data?

Mar 23, 2010

I had a drive that kept kernel panic'ing so my data center recommended using the spare hard drive to reinstall OS on, and import the data from the old drive. (they checked the hardware, it wasn't the hardware) The new install is done, and I need to mount the old drive and get backups off it since my data center does not provide management whatsoever.

It's the same OS on both (Cent OS 5.4 32-bit) I'm an advanced user on windows, but linux gets me. I can ssh in, do basic stuff like setup IP ranges and restart services. I normally navigate the box through SFTP so I have a gui. WHM shows me my drives as such

Found Disk: hda
Found Disk: sdb

so I'm assuming SDB is my old drive and the drive I need to access. I attempted to follow instructions on

cyberciti.biz/faq/freebsd-adding-second-hard-disk-howto/

but I'm assuming FreeBSD would work differently and I wasn't totally sure what the labels of the file systems should be.

General :: Remote Mount Of Nfs Gives Permission Denied Error - FUSE File System?

Apr 6, 2011

I have created a new file system (fuse) which works fine and is mounted in the local host. I want to be able to mount it from another host. I added it to /ect/exports: /mnt/ltfs *(rw,sync) And restarted nfs. Then from my client host I type:

mount -t nfs myHostName:/mnt/ltfs /mnt/data1

Where /mnt/ltfs is on my local host and /mnt/data1 is on the client host. Note that this is a "FUSE" file system so here is it's local "mount" output: ltfs on /mnt/ltfs type fuse (rw,nosuid,nodev,default_permissions,allow_other) Note thet this is of type "ltfs" but I am told that it should work like its a nfs. ltfs uses fuse under the covers.
