I'm working on an app that will authenticate user with a smartcard when the user inserts it in the card reader (this is on Red Hat 5.5). How do I detect a card has been inserted? Is there a daemon service I need to listen to and associated api to get notified etc? .
View 3 RepliesI am on debian lenny and I am trying to make a script that will run in the background and checks the ethernet connection. If the ethernet connection goes down it will connect to wlan. I have found 2 ways of checking ethernet connection, via proc/net/dev and via ifconfig eth0. But if possible I want to avoid polling. So is there any event that is triggered when the table gets disconnect or at least the connection goes down and up?
View 1 Replies View RelatedCurrently the Apparmor program has the notification logs saved to /etc/apparmor/notify.cfg, however, when I try to save the notification after putting my email address in, I get an error saying "Configuration failed for the following operations: Unable to write config changes to /etc/apparmor/notify.cfg"looking inside the folder, I do not see any file named "notify.cfg" BUT I do see so files called reports.conf, logprof.conf, and reports.crontab. I am guessing that the program is asking to save the notification changes to a file that does not exist and in fact one of those three files are the proper ones to use. Well if that is the case then how would I go about fixing this error?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI started an upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04 and it stopped with the message: Ubuntu desktop is listed to be removed but is on the removal blacklist. Then it restored back to 8.04. I don't know how to resolve this - it would be alright to remove the old Ubuntu desktop.

I didn't see any settings in the UI, but I did see a redirectsmartcards property in the conf file. I tried setting it from 0 to 1 but it didn't seem to have any effect (still getting traditional login dialog on remote computer). Does anyone know if this setting is supported or not? I did install pcscd and friends and when I insert the usb smartcard pcscd does show up in /var/log/messages so I think the smartcard is working okay locally.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Logitech Media Play mouse with many buttons. I'm using xbindkeys to create some shortcuts to programs e.g. firefox, gnome-terminal--these work wonderful. What I cannot figure out is how to get the buttons to work for the media player(Ubuntu>System>Keyboard Shortcuts>Sound). I set shortcuts using my win key and letters, hoping to use xbindkeys to send out a keystroke. I have tried to use xmacro but to no avail. xdotool was not helpful, I think it may be outdated(desktop/workspace functions did not work).
My preferred option would be to get mouse events to keystrokes working with xbindkeys and program x(x being whatever works); however, just getting my media buttons to interact with the media play is my ultimate goal.
I know in windows xp there is a registry key and an entry in the Plug and Play log file as well as maybe an event id, that is produced when a device (say usb) is plugged in. My question is, besides /var/log/ (messages?) Is there any other location that that information is stored in?

I now run 9.10 but I used to run 9.04. Accidentally made my 9.10 pretty small, and I was basically being lazy and leaving it, but I now want to free up the 80 GB I left on 9.04. Is there any way to just delete the partition, I have all I need from it.

So I am a relatively inexperienced user of Linux. I have some experience and have dabbled in linux mint on several occasions, I get what linux is I suppose.
I was running windows XP before, it caught a virus and I rigged up a usb drive to install another copy of XP over that because my disk drive is broken.
I decided yesterday to make a switch to linux, I was fed up with windows and I can do anything windows can do with linux if I actually immerse myself in it with a little work and a little learning.
So I downloaded a copy of Ubuntu 10.10. I tried to make a bootable USB stick install of it and I was successful, booted from it, but it kind of just lingered at a black screen with credits and never began installing, there was no terminal or anything and it wasn't starting on its own.
I chose the next best thing, installing it inside of windows from that wubi.exe thing included in the iso image of ubuntu 10.10. I installed it over that, wired it and got my always problematic (with linux at least) b43 broadcom drivers.
So now when I start my computer there are the two windows xp installations and ubuntu.
Is there any way to, from my ubuntu from the install method stated (installed from inside of windows using wubi.exe), remove both instances of windows XP and make linux the only operating system on my computer WITHOUT having to reinstall linux.
I say again my disk drive is broken and the USB stick method didn't work for me, there is no way I can legitimately install linux and format my hard disk / delete partitions.

View 2 Replies View Relatedsome info on the drive - it's a USB 2.0 portable hard drive (PQI H560), one partition spanning all 640GB, NTFS. Used almost exclusively on Linux (arch and ubuntu), but initially formatted on Windows 7.The hard drive has quite a lot of hard links on it, as it was a timemachine-like backup system.And now the issue itself:Today I made the mistake of taking out my portable hard drive from my Linux system and plugging it in a Windows 7 box. Everything worked nice, I took a movie from the drive, and it lay dormant for an hour or so. After that I took the drive out (forgot to unmount :/) and put it back in my Linux.
Any idea why did it break so bad? I thought NTFS was kind of durable.Best if there would be something nondestructive (be able to get the data while preserving every bit of the drive in it's current state - just to be sure it doesn't break anything)
In debian/ubuntu I want to:
a) Create a list of all the files in one directory tree
b) Do the same for a second directory tree
c) Compare the two lists such that, only the file NAMES are compared (i.e. just comparing the "file.txt" part so that "/home/folder/file.txt" == "/home/secondfolder/folder/file.txt)
d) Output a list of all the duplicates

I have a two column file and I need to create a new column in between the first and second but the new column adds a value to the first. E.g.code...
I thought I had figured out how to do it with the following but it just hangs:

Also tried the following to no avail:

I can add the new column with the added value to the last column easy ( awk '{print $0,$0+25}' file_in > file_out).

I've been using Vim for several months now via my web host (they allow putty access). All of a sudden, the escape key has become unresponsive. I cannot exist insert or any other mode by simply hitting escape. I have to hit F1 which brings up the help in vim and kicks me into command mode.
I'm most certain that my escape key on my keyboard is functioning fine since all of my windows shortcuts that use the escape key operate normally.
I know this is a ridiculous question and I'm certain there's a lot more to look into regarding a solution. What I really need is a solid lead as to where to start looking.

My folder structure inside a zip file abc.zip is code...
It would move into abc.zip as folder3/textfile.txt (the hierarchy preserved)
Also used a -j switch (help said it junked the path info and it did but) - it would move only into abc.zip and sit at the same level as folder1 and folder2 instead of replacing the textfile.txt within abc.zip/folder1
My question is - I want to replace the abc.zip/folder1/textfile.txt with the one inside seconddir/folder3/textfile.txt.
How do I achieve this via the command line interface?
