Given a single SMB network share (for example, \server\SHARED_FOLDER), I want to recursively list all the files, including those in the subdirectories (like find(1)).
I would prefer to do it in Linux, but I also accept Windows answers.
I am trying to both access files shared by Windows machines on my network, and I also want to share files on my Fedora 15 box. In Nautilus, if I choose the 'Browse Network' option on the left toolbar, I am shown a Windows Network icon. If I try to double click this, I am given an "Unable to mount location" error. Does anyone know why this is and how to fix it? Further, where is the GNOME 3 option to right click and choose to share a folder? Both KDE 4.5/4.6 and older versions of GNOME (at least on Ubuntu) had this. Is there a way to share files this way, and if not, is there some workaround?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Fedora 14 and when I'm surfing the web, it seems to lag in between pages. I don't think its my net connection, I just wiped windows 7 off my system for Fedora and it did not suffer from the same lag issues.I've tried adding in google's alternate dns server 8.8.8.8 but it didn't seem to fix the issue. I ran into this issue a couple years back on Ubuntu 8.1 or something like that, and I never could find out what I needed to configure.My second problem is that when I try to connect to other Windows systems on my wlan or wired connection, it gives the error "failed to retrieve share list from server". I'm not experienced in networking, can someone explain this to me?

I have a question: Under a share I can use the "read list" and "write list" options with groups (eg @users). Is that group a Linux or Samba group? If it's the later, am I forced to use the net groupmap command, or it is sufficient to have a group name in the /etc/group file? Should I add samba/linux users to that group (with net rpc) or is sufficient to have the group membership set in the linux?

I cannot install additional software or services on the Windows XP machine. I can install any software on the Linux machine. I've tried scp, but the connection failed and if my understanding is correct it is because scp requires that the target (windows machine) be running an ssh service. Is there a command-line linux utility that can pass Windows domain user and password and then copy a file from the linux machine to a share on the windows machine?

I have set up RHEL 5 file server with Winbind and samba services running.I am able to assign and authenticate windows XP users against my RHEL 5 server.No issues.But one or two of my users are using Windows 7 Ultimate edition and they are not able to access my network samba shares.I can view the shares in windows 7 box but trying to access gives me "network access denied error".But i can access the same share in Windows xp machine for the above tested users.Working great but not in windows 7 box.I haven't tested with Vista OS yet.

Might come other Linux distros too in the future. I have a 1TB HDD and my question is what's the smartest way to share files on all OS's? In what format?
I was thinking of ~100GB for Windows for apps and games etc. ~20-50GB for Ubuntu and some third partition, where I store my common files like media, pics, docs, downloads and stuff, taking the rest of the free space.
What filesystem should the shared partition be? Is there some smart way to get windows home directories and linux home directories to point to the same place on the shared partition or would it be recommended to just keep them separated?
Using SUSE 11 with Gnome. I mounted a CIFS share from a Windows server as /mnt/win. With the file browser, I can browse to file system/mnt/win and then the files and folders of the Windows share come up fine and I can open them. When I use the file browser to browse to network, the server hosting this share is listed. Then I browse to that server and it lists no shares (nothing at all). I can't go any further than the server. Is there a separate authentication necessary for the file browser to see this share from the network place?

I'm on OS X and mount a network share from my Windows XP machine. Files by default have the rwx (700) permissions. What OS X option I need to change, that the files will have rw (600) permission?
Maybe this question also applies for Linux mounting a Windows network share.
On Windows 7, I have VirtualBox running Linux (Ubuntu 8.04), with Samba set up so that the Windows host can access it. But if the virtual machine is shut down & restored, or rebooted, the Windows Network no longer shows it. I've tried refreshing many times, restarting Samba, disabling/enabling the virtual network adapter, and running the succession of commands ipconfig /release, ipconfig /flushdns, & ipconfig /renew, but none worked. As a last resort I could restart the host itself, but is there a better way?

But today, Places > Network > Workgroup tries to connect for about a minute then I get a "Unable to mount locations, Failed to retrieve share list from server" error. i have 3 comps(running suse 11.3) and a laptop(running vista sp2). i have installed samba on all suse comps. i have a printer attached to one of the comps and it has been shared also the internet connection on that comp has been shared. all the computers are connected using lan cables through an ethernet switch. i also have a wireless router which is connected to the ethernet switch.
I am able to view all the comps on the network except the laptop running vista. all the desktops are visible on the network and are able to print and share files on the network and also connect to the internet. the laptop running vista can connect to the internet but its not visible on the network and nor can it share files across the network or access the printer.
Is there a way to have drag and drop access between Linux and a Windows remote desktop connection?

Recently I installed Windows Live Essentials 2011 and all seems to have gone pear shaped because I can no longer share files with Ubuntu and Windows 7.
I can see linux share folders from windows,but not the windows share files from Linux.The windows pc name is jm-pc and the share file is temp. When the command nmblookup is used it discovers the Windows pc ok.

I'm trying to setup file sharing between computer A and computer B on the following diagram.
The green waves denote a wireless connection. The black lines are standard cat5. The grey lines are what happens via the electrical lines in the house.
I labelled them, "There be Dragons here..." since something odd happens that prevented the PS3 from connecting when attached directly, or through a switch, to these adapters. Computers attached to the same connection had dns problems, but manually setting the dns servers resolved the issue for them.
This same approach did not help with the PS3. Installing the router resolved the issue for both computers without manual dns's and the PS3.
So, any ideas how to get this working? I've looked through a few file sharing guides between fedora systems and none of them I can find mention setting anything up across network segments. Both systems are running fedora 11.
I have Ubuntu on one machine and open SUSE on the other. Both connected with an ethernet cable to the same router. Both connect to the internet ok. I did manage to set up 2 machines both running Ubuntu with file sharing but now I have switched one to SUSE I seem to be getting into a mess. Ubuntu sees the SUSE machine but does not open any folders. SUS does NOT see the Ubutu machine. I have looked for a beginners guide to setting up file shaing with SUSE without success. (I like SUSE better because I can use my Audiophile sound card "out of the box")
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am connecting to a Windows 2003 server share from my Ubuntu 9.10 machine. This is not a problem & deleting normal files is fine. What I am actually trying to do is remove a virus from this server. If I have AV software running on the server it is constantly picking up the virus & eventually this kills the server. The AV software is unable to remove the virus on the server, but is able to on desktop machines.Anyway, I thought use Linux to do the job & get the AV software back on the server. No go. I get a permission denied error when trying to remove the files with rm -f "filename"Is there anyway around this? I am reluctant to start the server with the Ubuntu live CD as it is in use as a file server. If I could remove the files manually this would be good.
View 9 Replies View RelatedRecently, I've again been trying to get file sharing working on my home network. I made some progress last night, getting so far as having all the shares on my Windows XP desktop visible to a netbook running Ubuntu 10.04 & connected wirelessly. But I ran into some snags.
Here's what I'm working with:
-a desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate
-a desktop which dual boots Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit and Windows XP Pro SP3
-a netbook which dual boots Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 and Ubuntu 10.04.
Everything connects wired except the netbook, which connects wirelessly. The router assigns each a specific internal IP address, so in effect all have static internal IP addresses, tied to the MAC addresses of their network adapters.
I have Samba Server Configuration Tool installed on both the desktop (Ubuntu 9.10) and netbook (Ubuntu 10.04). Versions are 1.2.63 in both Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04.
Here's as far as I got last night:
-Shares on the Windows XP machine were accessible from both the Windows 7 machine and Ubuntu 10.04 on the netbook, with no password required.
-I configured Samba on both machines to be part of the same workgroup (named PENGUIN) as the Windows 7 machine and the desktop when it's running Windows XP.
-I set up a share in Samba on the netbook while running Ubuntu 10.04. The share is visible on the network from the Windows 7 machine, but I couldn't access it. I was asked for a username and login. I had no idea which one to use, but no combination I tried worked. Windows kept saying it couldn't find a "path" to the share.
-In the Nautilus "network" item on the netbook, I can see the shares on my Ubuntu 9.10 desktop. But I can't access them. Again, I get asked for a username and password, and I have no idea what to enter, or where the username and password can be set.
-I set up a share on the Windows 7 machine, allowing read-only access to everyone. But it doesn't show up on either of the Ubuntu machines, at all, in the "Penguin" workgroup. So I'm not sure how to proceed.
Do I need to explicitly configure the IPv4 settings on each machine to a static internal IP? As I stated, each machine gets a predictable address assigned by the router, so in effect the machines do have static IP addresses. However, I'm not sure that's all the same to Samba.
