I'm trying to write a script to change the hostname of the computer at the first boot. The reason why I need this script is because I manage a number of training computer and I use Ghost to re-image it every 2 months. The script will read the mac address and the hostname from a csv file and compare it with the mac address on the current machine. I have stuck and don't know what is wrong as I'm new with script.
csv format:
Code:
00:11:22:33:44:55 host01
00:11:22:33:44:56 host02
script:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
# Description
# Change HOSTNAME for each machine from CSV file
#
# CSV File Format
# Each line contains two columns - mac address & hostname
# Description End .....

Found the below from RedHat Knowledgebase
The Completely Fair Queuing (cfq) scheduler in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5appears to have worse I/O read performance than in version 4. It appears as though the Completely Fair Queuing I/O scheduler (cfq) has a regression and thus exhibits reduced read-side throughput which can affect performance for both local and NFS mounted file systems.
One way to mitigate this is to set the cfq's slice_idle parameter to zero. To change this value, execute the following command echo 0 > slice_idle in the /sys/block directory appropriate for your situation, as shown below:
echo 0 > /sys/block/hda/queue/iosched/slice_idle
We are using NFS file systems in RHEL 5.3. I would like to know how to find which /dev/Device is being used by the NFS file systems, so that I could try setting the slice_idle to '0' to see if there is any difference in performance? In /etc/fstab I only see the actual NAS volumes for the NFS file systems.

I have installed RHEL-5 on a 64-bit machine recently, and want to install java. Earlier when I did "java -version", it showed jre1.4.0. But for my application , I need jre 1.5.0 or later, so I decided to download jre1.6. I am the root user here and I downloaded the jre1.6 as rpm.bin as well as simple .bin format.
But the problem is that when I tried executing any of them, I am getting below error message :
" ./jre-6u16-linux-x64-rpm.bin: line 368: ./install.sfx.20520: cannot execute binary file"
Moreover, now when I tried "java -version", it is not showing any thing.
Could anybody suggest me how can I resolve this deadlock situation, as I need to install my other application at the earliest.

I have an ntfs partition that I wish to access as a normal user(non-root). For this I did the following. As root I created a folder /windows and did a chmod 777 -R on /windows. Then I added the following line to /etc/fstab
Code:
/dev/sda3 /windows ntfs-3g defaults,nosuid,nodev,umask=000 1 0
Now, the partition is mounted alright but the problem is that when any other user (non-root) creates a files in /windows (say by executing touch newfile) the newly created file has the owner and group set as root. The non-root user can create the file and he can also delete the file, however, he cannot change the permissions of the file and also the owner:group is always set as root:root. How do I get across this problem, i.e. how do I mount a partition, so that a non-root user can also change the permissions and ownerships of the files he creates.

I'm trying to change the desktop to KDE so that it's persistent across boots. I did the usual thing of adding /etc/sysconfig/desktop and adding the appropriate parameters, but for whatever reason, whenever I reboot, it still loads Gnome. Now here's where it gets annoying: I can switch to runlevel 3, type startx, and then it will read /etc/sysconfig/desktop and load KDE properly. I've been banging my head against a wall over this one. Where is the call made to start gdm? I think I'll probably wind up changing the default runlevel to 3, but I'm still curious as to why those scripts are not executed on boot.

To comply with standards I need to change the root pw every so often. However, I really don't have a need to know the root password; as the only thing using root, is for ssh authenticating via ssh keys. What I want to do is automate the root password change monthly via a cron job, to a random value. Is there a way to do this without knowing the previous password?
