General :: Tried To Install Mint To Flash Drive / Can't Boot From Main Hard Disk
Jan 15, 2011I wanted to install a Linux distro to a flash drive so that I can have a portable OS with all my settings, programs, etc. wherever I go. So I fired up a Linux Mint Live CD and installed Mint to the flash drive, and this seems to work OK. But now, whenever I try to boot up my system normally without the flash drive plugged in, it doesn't seem to work. It basically hangs for a bit, and then I get the following prompt:
However, when I try powering my system up when the USB is plugged into the computer, it gives me an option between using the OS installed on my USB and the OS installed on my HD. Selecting the latter, everything loads up just fine. I'm guessing that installing Mint to the flash drive somehow messed with my native Grub installation.

From the title of this post, you can see that I am having some trouble getting the Linksys Wireless-G broadcom card working. I have been doing some research and have heard that getting a broadcom card to work in Linux can be a real pain.
I have verified that Mint 10 recognized PCMCIA so I am good there. I installed Wifi-Radar to see if maybe it would recognize it but it did not.
When I type iwconfig, it does not show any wireless signals available. When I originally set up the partitions for this laptop, I used PartedMagic and was able to quickly set up the network on that with vertually no problem what so ever.

May 12, 2011I want to install Linux Mint 11 (just came out) to a USB drive. My USB drive is 34 gb. So I want to put a 1-2 gb partition on it and install mint just to that. Is that possible? I am a noob so I want to use [URL] but the screenshots don't show an option for a partition or state any extra steps that might be involved in doing this (there's a tutorial for doing this for one of the Ubuntus using fdisk, but I don't have any linux installs right now).

General :: Drive Don't Recognize DVD's / Resolve This?
Aug 1, 2011Using Ubuntu 10.10, and a Aopen CD/DVD Drive, that when purchased it was suppose to read and write to everything. But my system will not recognize blank DVD-R or RW.
Everything works on the CD's writing/reading. I can play DVD movies, but thats it.

I do not get any errors of any kind. The drive light goes on and off like it should.

Jan 29, 2010how to get linux onto an old laptop (dell inspiron 2600, 1GHZ, 120MB RAM). the cd drive doesn't recognize CD's anymore and in boot menu, "Setup Utility" the usb drives aren't recognized. the usb drive or pen drive boots in another desktop just fine. i need to somehow install xubuntu or crunchbang or something lite but must do it using net install. i see lots of tutorials but they are either too complicated or unknown source, like "inslux." and not too complicated of a process. I'm a "techie-tard," i guess. also, i'd like to suggest a new "sub-forum" in "distribution" forum, Called "General Distro."

May 2, 2010start getting Linux up and running. Like a lot of people, I chose an older computer I could fuss with, a 500mhz 256meg ram machine, and decided to install Puppy on a spare 40meg hard drive I have, as my bios does not boot from usb...I think...
Anyway, I have found that my bios does not recognize the hard drive when formatted to ext2! I have taken the drive and formatted it back to ntfs, and my bios recognizes it, and then back again to ext2, and nope, it's not there, thus I am still booting puppy from the cd...sigh...
Is my bios so out of date that I'm just out of luck? Is there anyway to check this?

But in GNOME Desktop environment, when the USB drive is plugged-in, the partition is auto-mounted with other options:

All files permission on the drive is now 555. I can't write to it anymore. I saw a post earlier having similar mount result, but this one is USB drive though.
So how to configure GDE mount automatically with my intended mount options?

Jun 25, 2010I have been playing around with a Ubunto 10.04 live cd (32bit) on my mac. I want to be able to boot this OS (or similar) on my Mac, and on any other computer (PC or Mac). I also want it to remember changes and files. From looking around this is possible from a USB (with a Casper RW loop file I think). I have used the Live CD to create a bootable flash drive, which works on PC's but not my mac. Using these instructions: [URL] I was able to get my Mac to see the Linux at boot but once I clicked the Tux icon it would hang/ freeze. I let it sit for 10+ min and nothing happened. I started over (with a fresh formatting) and got the same results. I have reformatted the flash drive and am ready to try over. I think that I am goofing up in terminal steps as I am not use to doing that. After the last step in the terminal I get an error, something like invalid number or similar, it is not the one mentioned in the instructions.
I know that this for advanced users, I am not yet but working that way. I an a (retired) power windows user, moderate Mac user and a new Linux user. I want to learn which is why I am asking. I am not in a spot to install Linux directly on my Mac, so I I am seeking help to do it on a flash drive. I want the ability to run off any computer and I see this as I way to get there.

Mar 28, 2010I'm posting this question in Ubuntu since mint is a variant of ubuntu. I've just downloaded Linux Mint 8 and my cd rom is not working properly and so the only option I've is to take the iso to usb drive and install it from there. I've tried two ways and bot of them did not work.
1. Using IsoBuster I directly extracted the data from the downloaded file into the usb drive and tried re-booting the system
2. I used a LinuxLive USBcreator to create the installation files into the usb drive and this too didn't work out.
installing the linux mint 8 into my system using the usb drive? I don't want to run linux mint from the usb drive like knoppix. Also note that I'm going to have dual boot system with win xp pro as the other os.
Fedora :: External Drive Seen In Mint But Not 14?
May 15, 2011I have a computer with an Asus M2N68-AM plus mother board running Fedora 14 that will not show external usb flash drives or hard drives when I plug them in. I used to run Linux Mint 9 on this computer and switched to Fedora because of easier LVM support out of the box. Mint would mount these devices just fine.
To simplify the issue and rule out anything I did since the installation, I tested this on both the Mint 9 live DVD and Fedora 14 live cd (both 32-bit versions, if that makes a difference) with the same results.
Just to be clear, I'm still somewhat new to Linux. I'm reasonably sure it's an issue with seeing the devices in the first place and not just an auto-mounting problem.

The Ubuntu disk utility can't delete the partition, and GParted can't even see it. How can I completely wipe the flash drive from Ubuntu? I'd prefer not to install any additional software.

Aug 19, 2010System: Linux flashvoyager 2.6.32-23-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 11 07:54:58 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux Ubuntu 10.04 Installed onto 64gig Flash Voyager GTR plugged into Tosh satpro laptop dual core 4 gig memory. This is not a casper r/w persistent install version. This is installed directly onto the flash pen and running as if the flash drive was a solid state disc.
I have obtained a 64gig which can read at 34mb/s and write at 28mb/s. The reason I wanted this was so I could install linux ubuntu and run the OS straight of the flash as if it was a Solid state disc. I have tried using the pendrivelinux method where the persistent data is stored inside a virtual file system but I found it did not allow grub or kernel updates without the need to rebuild the entire datapen plus I did not know how to get rid of the live boot menu where it asks for language and the like.
I boot the pen straight into linux ubuntu 10.04 via the bios boot menu and select the usb pen drive. Once into grub I select the most recent kernel and then load up ubuntu. When I first started using the distro from the pen the speed of the web browsing was so slow. I have since configured the browser to store the cache inside tmpfs /media/ramdisk and browsing seems fine now however there is underlying speed issue with using the method of install. Uncompressing installs takes an age. I have configured fstab like so:

PS: I am not allowed to use the HDD on the laptop since it is company laptop. My previous company laptop had Kubuntu 8.04 with XP as VM. Also having the install on the flash drive would give me the convenience of booting the pen from any hardware.
General :: Removing Grub From MBR Of Flash Drive
Nov 29, 2009I have a flash drive that I used on my old netbook to temporally hold a copy of ubuntu as the netbooks internal drive was dead. I have since got a new netbook and wanted to return the flash drive to simple removable storage. I've re-partitioned it back to 14gb fat32 2gb ext2 and everything is working fine. Except that if I try to boot with the key inserted grub loads then errors imminently (sort of obvious if grub is still in the MBR but there is no menu.lst file anymore...) Googling for removal of GRUB just gives me loads of hits for how to restore windows mbrs when you dont want to keep linux anymore. None of these methods seem to have any targeting. I need to remove grub from sdb while keeping it intact in sda. sdb shouldn't even be bootable, so that when boot from usb is higher in the bios than boot from hdd the usb key is ignored and the hdd is booted as normal.
