I would rather not use the terminal if it is not necessary.
View 3 Replies View Relatedcopy a compact flash card with a form of Linux on it (Found out it was custom version based on Fedora Core 3). The flaky USB card reader seems to have hosed the flash card, it shows up with unknown volume after ejecting the card and reinserting it. My troubleshooting: I have Ubuntu on a flash drive that I used to start all this to read the flash card.
- I tried Disk Utility to reformat the card as Master Boot Record and the volume as ext3 with flag set to Bootable and copied the files using cp in command line.
- I tried ISO Master & mkisofs to make an ISO that the USB thumb drive tools can use, but it wouldn't copy all the files. Looks like symbolic links either were ignored or couldn't find the source file with -f.
- I learned that I might need a boot partition with a boot image, which I think I have in initrd-2.6.14.7img, but I don't know how to do that. Do I also need a swap partition?
My updated goal: using the files from the flash card, make a bootable compact flash card with Fedora Core 3.
I am trying to connect some USB 3.0 HDD's up to a Via Labs USB 3.0 Hub. When I type 'lsusb', it only lists the hub and not the devices. If I plug in a USB 2.0 device to the hub, it can be recognized. If I plug the USB 3.0 device directly into the system, it is also recognized.
In further investigating, I typed 'lsusb -v' and found that the USB 3.0 part of the hub has an error - under where the Hub Descriptor information is supposed to be, it says "** UNRECOGNIZED: 06 30 00 00 02 00 can't get hub descriptor: Broken Pipe"
So that explains why the drive can't be recognized. My question is: Is this a Linux problem or a Via Labs problem? I am running Slackware 13.1.
Is there somewhere on the system I can make Linux recognize this properly?
I recently updated from Fedora 9 to Fedora 12. Everything else works fine, but the situation with Fedora automatically recognised new devices when plugged in has changed to the exact opposite. Under Fedora 9, all devices I plugged in were always automatically recognised, whether I liked it or not. Under Fedora 12, nothing is ever automatically recognised any more. Whenever I plug something in, the system just ignores it. If they devices turn up as block device descriptors in /dev, I can manually mount them and access them through the mount points. Otherwise, I can't do squat. Now I can only access my digital camera by manually mounting it and copying the files. This works, but is cumbersome. Under Fedora 9, I used to be able to use GPhoto to download the pictures via PTP. Not any more. GPhoto acts as if the camera wasn't even there. So does F-Spot. What has happened? Have I missed installing some kernel module or service or something?

I need to have an alias which will allow it to mount, not create a symbolic link to an already mounted directory. i.e. 'mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/harddrive' should actually mount /dev/hdb1

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have had a Supermicro X7DCL-3 motherboard based machine, running CentOS 5.2 x86_64, recently upgraded to 5.3.Strangely enough, although I must have installed the 5.2 using DVD disk, the running system does not show the DVD drive. The machine was not used very much so I noticed that only today, after the update. There is no trace of it in 'dmesg', thera are no /dev/cd* and/or /dev/dvd* devices. The IDE controller is IT8213 (as shown by 'lspci'). In 5.2 kernel (2.6.18-92.el5-x86_64) lspci says "unknown device". I have checked the /usr/src/kernels/*/.config files and both kernels (5.2 and 2.6.18-128.el5-x86_64 of 5.3) seam to have the support for that controller added into the kernel:CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IT821X=yAny idea why it is not working? The Supermicro has apparently noticed this also as their OS compatibility chart lists the IDE interface for that motherboard as supported up to RHEL 5.1 but not for 5.2.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI built a new pc and want to have Suse again. Unfortunately Suse installation does not recognize my CD/DVD device. So I boot from DVD select installation and a few moments later there's a popup 'make sure cd number 1 is in your drive'. I also did try to load other kernel modules but nothing helps. The only drive which is always recognized is floppy drive.
Here are some details about my system: Asrock P55M Pro board, Intel P55 chipset, 2 SATA HDD's, IDE NEC 2510 DVD writer, BIOS is set to AHCI due to Windows.
I tried following:
Use Suse DVD 11.0, 11.2, x86 or x64
Set BIOS to AHCI, IDE (compatible), IDE (enhanced)
DVD writer NEC was used in my former pc and did install 11.0 without probs.
Installing from HDD is new to 11.2 thus I copied the DVD to a directory. During Installation I can select the correct partition but suse is not able to find repositories.(?)
I need to install an aplication to several machines. The aplication runs on a Debian and the installation process is done with a usb. I'm using a plop live usb to perform the installation. I've seen that with plop , once the live system is on, i can run some scripts.
What I'm trying to do is:
->format the target device (a 4G compact flash).
->mount the formatted device.
->untar my debian.tar.gz in that device.
After rebooting, the system never boots.

I'm trying to use the most-base install of opensuse 11.4 and so i'm using the text-only interface. I looked up some guides on using the 'mount' command but I'm encountering problems. I tried doing.
mkdir /tmp/flash
su
mount /dev/sdb /tmp/flash
but first off, I don't even know if sdb is my flash device, there's ~60 things in my /dev/ directory, and ~10 things that look like 'sdb' but I try anyway, and I generally get an error telling me that either /dev/sdb is busy, or /tmp/flash is busy but I wanted to check here and clarify first, how do I even know which /dev/ item is my flash drive? When I plug in my flash drive, no less than 3 new entries appear in /dev/ so, I'm a little confused. What do I do?
I tried to do 'srm', 'wipe', 'shred'... whatever terminal commands to securely wipe a '/dev/sdc' (USB flash device) but it says that the device is read-only. How should I go about securely wiping it ?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI formatted the USB flash drive using Karmic's Format Disk utility (right-click on a volume, select "Format..."), and selected "Encrypted, compatible with Linux (FAT)" from the "Type" drop-down menu.It mounts correctly when I plug it in, and I can access the files just fine. When I unplug the Flash drive without using the 'Safely Remove Drive' option, the icon on my desktop changes its name to '2.0 GB Encrypted', instead of disappearing and unmounting like my unencrypted Flash drives do.
I would like to have encrypted Flash drive treated in the same way as my unencrypted Flash drives, which disappear and unmount when unplugged, even if the 'Remove Safely' menu option isn't used. What can I do to accomplish this?NOTES:When I plug the encrypted Flash drive in, the following line shows up in the output of 'mount'. 'secure' is the name I gave the disk during the format process:
