Here's the situation:
I have Ubuntu 9.1 with wubi and Vista on my laptop. I was playing my laptop through the TV, then I tried to switch it back to computer control and the computer went black. I had to hold to power button to restart, and suddenly grub4dos starts up when I try to launch ubuntu. I can still launch Vista. Is there anything I can do to save my system? At the very least, I would like to be able to copy data from my ubuntu system to my vista system. How can I do that? I can't find C:/ubuntu/disks. It doesn't seem to exist.
I have Win XP SP2 installed on my machine. I wanted to try Ubuntu and i created a CD an and wanted to install the OS. The CD booted and i selected the option of "using The OS together and selecting which one to boot" or something similar to that. Ubuntu and changed MBR and installed itself. However on restarting I am getting Error 18. Now i am unable to use my computer at all.
In recover my XP at the moment and how to install Linux so that it does not mess around with any other OS?

View 6 Replies View RelatedIf I could I would change the boot order but I can't do that (I have a Dell Studio 1747). I try F2 to enter the BIOS set up, but I still end up with that error and never get to the setup. F12 doesn't work either (F12 is for the boot order) so I can't boot from the DVD with the Win7 installation DVD as the computer just freezes and I can't get past the Dell splash screen.
I have tried to remove the coin battery on the motherboard in an attempt to reset the BIOS but that didn't work either.
So...
F2 = error
F12 = freeze
Reset bios by removing coin size battery = no change
I assume there is no use reformatting the HD by attaching it to another computer and re-install Win7. Is it a motherboard problem?
for christmas my parents got both my younger sister and i acer mini computers, model d250-1958. my sister was trying to change her password that lets herself as a particular user log in. somehpw she messed up the password and its not what she thought it was and now she doesn't have any way of accessing anything. i thought that there might be an ovveride system or a reseting trick. i've looked in the manual but cant find anything of the sort for either of the two options.

I boot linux from a usb drive so I can carry my distro wherever I go - I've been doing it for quite some time now and it's always worked wonderfully. Problem: This morning my little cousin unplugged the computer WHILE I was booting into linux. Power loss has happened before, but with no ill effects. This time however, it's decided it won't boot. The screen clears, and just as GRUB is about to load, it freezes and the computer reboots over and over.
I booted to a LiveCD of Ubuntu to try and fsck the drive, but it won't mount the volume. I've worked with this install so long, and have customized it so much I **really** don't want to do a reinstall.. What can I do?
I created a USB Live disk and installed Fedora 12 to my Asus EEE 1005HA (12 inch screen). The machine boots fine, but Hardware Graphics acceleration is not working correctly. If I stop X11, and type "Xorg -configure", the Xorg utility recieves a segmentation fault and exits, and the resulting xorg.conf file does not work correctly. The error is "(EE) open /dev/fb0: No such file or directory". All the correct packages are installed, and there is no logical reason why it is failing. The rest of the hardware on the EEE works fine.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a situation where I am trying to move some data from a Linux computer to a Windows computer. In all there is 700GB of data to move in about 1.5 million files, so I don't want to do this over the network.My first thought was to use an external USB hard drive and create an NTFS partition and copy the files from the linux computer to mount on the Windows computer. After 4 days of copying without completion I abandoned that idea. I thought the NTFS might be slowing it down, so I created an EXT3 partition. 4 Days later it was still copying. I did some calculations and there was no way the USB 2.0 connection was that slow. I then used ddrescue and cloned the drive to be copied overnight and it took about 12 hours. i was able to mount the USB drive under Linux and access the files appropriately. The only problem is that I can not access that USB drive on my Windows 7 computer. I have tried Explore2fs, DiskInternals Linux Reader, and Ext2 Installable File System For Windows, but none of them is recognizing the external drive.

I take it home turns out its a eee pc asus with linux. there isnt even a cd drive on this computer, i am currently using my wife's computer trying to learn about linux, never used this OS before, I know nothing past the general windows xp user. well i start it up and there is a username and password, how do i reset this password? i read all about this GRUB and command prompts but i dunno even know how to get to command promts, and i dont know anyone smart. and i cant use a password recovery disc cause there is no cd rom.

View 5 Replies View RelatedJust bought a netbook, ASUS Eee PC 1001PX, and got rid of the crappy XP pre-installed. first i put netbook remix on it, and tried many downloads and ndiswrapper to fix the wireless problem. then i went ahead and put another form of ubuntu on it thinking it might have the right drivers need to use the built-in wireless card, nothing. i dl all updates and bug fixes. i went to atheros to download the only driver they have for linux in the AR8132 class but still not helping. although i am not sure if i even installed. once dl it only extracted itself. i couldnt figure out how to run. if someone has this type of netbook it would be awesome. everything works on it except wireless and headphone jack. i know its just cosmetics but it would be nice if all hardware worked.

While I can access the internet using the Vista partition, on the Ubuntu partition, I cannot access anything. Further investigating the problem, I have noticed that there is something wrong with the DNS on the Ubuntu partition. Pinging the IP address of a website (such as linuxquestions.org) loads up, yet, when I type in the Domain Name, there is an endless wait. I have already deleted and re-entered the contents of the resolv.conf file as well as try to change the settings but to no avail.
