I have a asus eee 701 4G mini laptop. I am tring to instal an external antenna booster GSKY model gs-27usb. How to instal drivers for it. Anything i tried finish by permission dinied! Also i tried to install extra memory (usb flash memory key) and i could find the way to do it.

I plugged in my external dvd-r (asus) via usb. It showed me some message on shell, that it has detected the cdrom(although its dvd rom as well but nevermind) and its of ASUS. But how do i know which dev it was associated with in /dev/? Since i had to test something, i plugged it out, and save the output of ls /dev/ > ~/result.txt
after plugging the dvd-rom, i compared the results and was able to find that it was associated with simple cdrom i.e. /dev/cdrom. I wanted to know that is there any command that will tell me which /dev/ file was associated with external dvdrom? i tried to see in the following result
1) df -h ( no results, just the already mounted partitions)
2) fdisk -l ( same as above)
3) dmesg | tail (shown almost the same result as was shown on shell at the time of plugging the dvd)
I have an HP Pavilion dv7-1243cl laptop. It has an internal wifi that works ok at home but when I'm traveling I stay at RV Campgrounds the wifi signal gets pretty weak. So I Installed an external antenna.(ALFA model AWUS036H). The signal gets a full 5 bars.
Now the problem. I dual boot OS11.3 and Windows 7 pro. Everything works as expected on MS. When In boot to OS11.3 I can only connect to the internal antenna. (real spotty). If I turn off the internal antenna I can't connect to the external one. Knetwork manager show/detects and shows the strength of both of the signals only when the internal is on. On MS7 I can turn off the internal and it will connect to the external one with no problem. Is there anyway to get OS to allow me to connect to my choice of antenna? I've been into manage connections and selected wlan1 (external). no joy.
Trying to install 10.04 to an existing Win7 (64) system that uses a RocketRaid 2340 controller. Windows installs just fine; reads the external driver file every time. Linux never has installed on this machine.

So I decided to try installing with Ubuntu and it was perfect. I didnt have to do anything else to get it detected. However, I would like CentOS 5 on this unit to practice on. Below is my attempt to install the kmod-jme-1.0.6.1-2.el5.elrepo.i686.rpm on a fresh CentOS install. Unfortunately, the dependencies are failing.

Im looking for kind of an applet for Ubuntu for switching between external and internal monitor of my netbook (Asus 1201n). Currently I can enter into NVIDIA X Server Settings and set up an external monitor without any problem, but this is kind of slow way of doing this comparing to the way I do it in Windows (pressing fn + f8 ) and I'm often when in my home plug-in into an external monitor. It looks like there is such an option in Jupiter (I'm using it for other function keys) but for my computer it always says that there is no external monitor detected (but function keys for switching are working ). Is there any other tool which could help me? It does not need to react on function keys, just choosing an option from tray would be enough for me. I'm new with linux and not so fancy about changing many things in text files, but when I had a good instructions how then I can do this.

I bought an ASUS EEE PC 901 second hand and had reformatted the hard disk with a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix. formatted the 2 drives as follows : 4 gb hard disk space ext4 , and 8 GB hard disk space ext4 This was after countless problems with Ubuntu 11.04 Desktop edition previously not being able to connect to the internet via my home wifi router. I took the advice on this forum somewhere, someone said 10.10 NBR will not have issues with wifi connectivity. Tried it and it worked. On my current Ubuntu NBR 10.10 installation, absolutely no wifi connectivity problems whatsoever.
Now my brand new MyLink portable USB Optical Drive which plays DVDs and CDs has arrived in the post. I open it, plug it into my ASUS eee pc 901. And nothing happened. I am used to using Windows and its Plug and Play function. Now for the life of me, this just doesn't happen in Ubuntu right now. The computer does recognise the drive though. Under Applications > Disk Utility I can see the optical drive right there and there's an option to use Brasero to copy and burn DVDs. However no option to play. I tried using the Movieplayer that comes installed with this Ubuntu version to play the DVD I'd insertedd into the drive, but on clicking "Add file" to try and search where on the system the DVD file is located, nothing turns up. All I can see are my home directory and the files on my hard drive.
The external optical drive came with a CD with the drivers on the CD, meant to be installed I think. But I have absolutely no idea how to install it on Ubuntu. Or if I need to install it.Can anybody help me out please? I'm starting to think maybe I should have just stuck to the Windows XP that came with this netbook. I would prefer to stick with Ubuntu though as its supposedly faster than Windows...
I have an Ubuntu 10.04 box that accesses NTFS drives along with ext4. Recently, I switched from ntfs-3g to Paragon NTFS driver, which is proprietary, but free of charge. It feels quite faster on my internal drives. Now I have a problem with external eSATA NTFS drive. When it is detected, I mount it via Nautilus GUI, but it gets mounted with the ntfs-3g driver. (It can be mounted via command line with the Paragon driver, but this is less convenient. How can I configure my system (is it Gnome or some system-wide configuration ?) to mount all NTFS drives with the Paragon driver?

i have bought a new Asus k42jr notebook with no OS. Ihave an old version of an ubuntu cd 7.04. i have installed the cd successfully but it does not recognize the network adapter (lan), audio driver and the bluetooth. how can I enable my LAN so that i can upgrade my Ubuntu to the newest version. BTW, i use another another notebook to check on how to enable my network driver. - this notebook has no cd writer installed and the new laptop does not allow me to boot from the USB.

I am trying to clone a working Centos 5.4 system onto a new box with a ASUS P5KPL-CM motherboard. I have done so by plugging in a Realtec lan card - but can't get the motherboard lan working. Googling tells me the motherboard has a Atheros L1E lan chip - but I have installed several kmod drivers from ELREPO - but still can't get the on-board lan working. So far I have installed:

kmod-atl1
I have just installed these with yum - but no new hardware appears in the network gui dialogue. Am I missing some step here - or is there another driver I should be looking for.
I have a desktop PC which initially had the Intel D946gzis mobo, its chipset as video controller, some RAM and so. There I installed Debian without a problem alongside WindowsXP.
I've bought an ASUS HD 4670 video card, installed it on the PC and now the installed Debian does not work, while the Ubuntu live CD refuses to run no matter if I set acpi, apic on or off... it throws me some low memory corruption at position just like shown here. With normal configuration, Debian throws kernel panic (keyboard lights blinking). Anyone have faced this before? Ideas? Thanks!! (meanwhile, debian hides in a virtualbox :'( )
Edited: Tried Ubuntu 9.10 x64 (due to the fact i've a core2duo at 2GHz) and it throws a kernel-panic to me (flashing caps and num LEDs). On screen, can be read different lines with things like:

Could it be something about this new video card having ddr3?

The wireless card is working with the driver rt2870sta, but I've read not all the capabilities of the device is unleash unless the native driver is used.
I'm building a mini-itx system and need a wireless card. The Jetway MB says pcie mini card, so I'm considering the Intel 512AN_MMWW2. Anybody used this with Ubuntu 10.04? Looks like it's working for some folks, but no entries in the wiki yet.Also, It does not come with an antenna. This is for a mini-itx case so a laptop antenna set will not be ideal. Does someone know where to get an antenna or two that are made for mini-itx cases? The MB backplate has a punch out for a wireless antenna. I've looked, but don't see what I need anywhere.

However, I later found out that my internal wireless card was not supported by wireless monitoring applications (aircrack, kismet, etc) that I wanted to learn to use. So I brought a compatible USB wireless card, Netgear WNDA3100 V.2, but then I run into some problems. First, how can I install new hardware in linux? Second, I know I have to install the madwifi driver but do I have install the original driver before I install madwifi? Can I have both antenna running at the same time?

I've got a nice old laptop with a nice install of SUSE 10 that does everything I want except connect to the internet. I've got about 1 more day of patience remaining before I have to revert to the hated Ws. I even got a supposed "plug and play" Asus usb-n10, but have not been able to work out the install.

I misplaced my Belkin USB wifi antenna recently -- I'd never gotten it working with Ubuntu as I lacked the original driver CD and hadn't bothered doing the footwork with ndiswrapper (without driver files, as Belkin just gives you an .exe) to get it functional. I'm currently living in a home where I can't be wired directly to the router, so I'm looking for advice on what kind of antenna I should get to replace it. Ideally if the device need no config, that is if its 'plug in and play' would be ideal. Though if theres support in the ubuntu drivers tool that would be ok too. I created a USB Live disk and installed Fedora 12 to my Asus EEE 1005HA (12 inch screen). The machine boots fine, but Hardware Graphics acceleration is not working correctly. If I stop X11, and type "Xorg -configure", the Xorg utility recieves a segmentation fault and exits, and the resulting xorg.conf file does not work correctly. The error is "(EE) open /dev/fb0: No such file or directory". All the correct packages are installed, and there is no logical reason why it is failing. The rest of the hardware on the EEE works fine.

There's no hardware enable/disable that I can find.I have tried "sudo ifconfig wlan0 up" to enable it, the light for the wifi antenna comes on, but still no luck.I know the wifi works in Ubuntu, because if i load windows first, then reset into Ubuntu, once in a while it works just fine.

(not monitor mode) Now I'm interested in Alfa AWUS036NEH. I like it because it is small an have a long antenna strong 1000mW. signal. (AWUS036H is a little bit big for me) However from what i have read AWUS036NEH is not supported in master mode (softAP)(or may be supported but with hostapd, but again some forum said it doesn't support and some say it does... Totally confused.) -> Actually AWUS036NEH is not expensive but I don't want to invest in something i'm not sure about so I won't buy it until I really know if it works. So I switch to find out what is for sure
1. supported in master mode in Ubuntu
2. Have a long antenna (like 5" or something. I have no idea about hardware but I think longer antenna should send signal more further)

Sadly I only find Alfa AWUS036NEH the only option for me , the others has no brand. However TL-WN722N is what most likely to fit. Only it has a shorter antenna. Can i replace the antenna with a longer one (with some others brand) by myself? (TL-WN722N can use master mode in kernel 3.0 ? already ? some say it should but i've not seen one that stated clearly) Ahh I think the above is totally messed up. I will make long story short.

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a pc as a duel boot, On the computer I use a belkin surf and share n speed controller to connect wireless ( pc doesn't have a wireless connection) I have found the correct driver RLT8192SU from realtek and unzipped it and moved the contents to a flash drive. The problem is I am a total noob to Linux based systems and i have no ideal how to install the contents, there is a read me file but it makes no sense to me and i have absolutely no clue how to install the driver so i have no internet. Is there an easier way to install or step by step instructions?
