View 2 RepliesIs it possible to list/find/compare the program versions on a Centos system, against Redhat/Centos Errata/Security/Bug lists? Sort of looking for a way to make sure that all the packages on a system are ok, and not a security risk-- Without having to update every package. A pseudo code, in my mind is:

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been using Linux for quite a while and have gotten pretty good at it, but recently I started using Backtrack in a VM and realized I have no idea what it is based on. Then I got to thinking I have no idea what that even means. For example, OSX is based on Darwin right, but what does that mean? Ubuntu is another that is based on Debian, but I don't know what that means.
The reason I'm asking is because in order to get my screen resolution and networking right in Backtrack I need to know what it is based on so I can download the proper packages to install the VirtualBox guest additions, and I have no idea. Is there a way to get this information from the operating system? Maybe uname -a is giving me the info and I just don't know where to look in the output?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI know find can do what I am looking for, but I am wondering if there is an alternative way to find files on the filesystem either created before/after a certain point, or at a certain time.
Typically I rely on updatedb & locate for most of my file searching needs. Issues with those tools, though, are that it only has directory and file names, and it only creates a database of local directories, not anything mounted via CIFS|NFS or via -o loop (eg, .iso images).
So if I need to find files created after yesterday across the entire system (local and remote filesystems), I am currently needing to use find.
What other tools, if any, would accomplish this in a similar fashion?
I have tried ls and grep, but that requires (in my attempts so far) multiple searches:
ls -lR | grep Aug | grep 10
ls -lR | grep Aug | grep 11

View 1 Replies View RelatedOn Debian, if I want to compile some package X myself, but I don't want to spend time hunting down and installing its dependencies, I can issue the following command:
Code:
apt-get build-dep X
And apt (so long as it knows about package X) will install all the dependencies for me.Does the yum package manager on RedHat-based systems have a similar feature?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed 9.10 server on an old machine at home that I want to use purely for managing any software downloads.
I used to use the firefox add on DownThemAll on my ubuntu desktop environment so I am looking for a web based download manager for the server that has similar features (username/password restricted downloads, scheduling, pausing/restarting downloads) as DownThemAll.
I basically want to be able to add a bunch of downloads to a list and the server then downloads them. I need to be able to save a username/password combination for certain sites. I would also like to be able to see progress on the downloads and pause/resume them
Is there a way to set Firefox to place downloaded files in different folders based on the file type?e.g. in my Downloads folder place all .doc files in a sub-folder called ".doc", all .jpgs in a sub-folder called ".jpg"I'd assume there's probably a rule, or a script that can be used to accomplish this, but being a graduate student, I don't have alot of free time to poke around and figure it out myself

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to create a CentOS based liveCD that mounts a NFS share and executes one script there. The NFS never mounts altough while logged I can mount it with the very same command that I use in the KS.
In the %post I have :
%post --log=/tmp/post.log --erroronfail
mkdir /mnt/nfs
mount -o nolock 10.23.1.1:/csc/RemoteHome /mnt/nfs
I added the --log in order to debug, but nothing is written in /tmp/post.log. I tried redirection on the mount command with >> /tmp/debug.log but this is not written. Maybe during the post sequence /tmp is RO ? Anyway, I tried with ifup lo, service portmap start in the %post, but doesnt change (I even have a service : command not found in the live cd creator output).
