View 3 RepliesI'm running a virtual machine of CentOS 3 and I am trying to decompress a tar file, but I run out disk space. I created the VM with 80 GB of disk space. When I look at the partititions, (du command) I have /dev/sda2 with a partition of 70GB mounted on /home with < 1% used.
Here comes the n00b question: How do I use the 70GB of space on sda2? I thought working in the /home directory, where sda2 is mounted, would give me access to that disk space, but the tar files fill up the /boot partition.
I have recently upgraded to Bugzilla3 and I wanted to restore my bugzilla database with my backup but when I attempt to tar -xvvzf file.tgz I get the error:
gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
My script that creates the backup is:
#!/bin/sh
datestr=`date +%m-%d-%Y`
bakdirpart="bugzilla.backup.$datestr"
bakdir="$HOME/$bakdirpart"
mkdir "$bakdir"
(cd /etc; tar cvzf $bakdir/mysql.conf.tgz mysql)
(cd /etc; tar cvzf $bakdir/apache2.conf.tgz apache2)
(cd /usr/share; tar cvzf $bakdir/bzreport.share.tgz bzreport)
(cd /usr/share; tar cvzf $bakdir/bugzilla.share.tgz bugzilla)
(cd /var/lib; tar cvzf $bakdir/mysql.hotdb.tgz mysql)
(cd /var; tar cvzf $bakdir/www.tgz www)
(cd "$HOME"; tar cvf "${bakdir}.tar" "$bakdirpart")
Is there any way to recover my backup copy?
I have tried to plan my backup plans. As I want it simple I am gonna use only tar.gz combination of some files that are important. My question then is the following:
-I have a 100GB hard disk with 20Gb free space only. I would like to backup the rest 80Gb to an external hard disk. I run my scripts which end up saving a 75Gb(due to compression) to my external hard disk.
-->Then comes the times to try to see the contents of my archive (just to make sure that I can recover what is inside the 75GB disk file). Do you know if tar.gz needs to decompress the 75Gb file in some /tmp space in my hard disk for showing me the contents inside it? In that case it will not be easy at all to ever look at what is inside it in my hard disk, as there is no 80Gb of free space in my hard disk (20gb only).
I had a situation in which the the path of the file to be copied is written in other file and I had to copy it using shell script..I can use cp $(cat /home/robert/location.txt) /media/sda1 on normal linux shell...But I am using buildroot script where $(cat /home/robert/location.txt) evaluate to nothing..is just blank..

My P-series running AIX and Oracle and my AS/400 both back up to tape drives daily.
But my VMware system is not being backed up, the virtual machines are, but my tape drive just broke down.
I just ordered a server grade machine with an i5 CPU, running 3 2TB SATA drives in RAID5, this is going to be my new backup server.
I am hoping I can put Linux on it, and some sort of open source file replications, real time backup software that will back up my Windows servers, and my Windows desktops in real time.... any sort of animal exist?
I vaguely remember that there is a way to store instructions for vim in my file (like tabstop width etc). I'm not speaking of settings in vimrc but of storing those settings with in the file to be edited. That way the tabstop has always the right width even if I transfer this file to another computer. However, I can't remember what the magic word is so that vim picks up those settings when loading the file.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had Ubuntu for awhile, now I installed Fedora12, I'm trying to follow directions to install a program from source code (tar.gz file) I have the February 2010 issue of Linux Format, and am trying to follow it step by step. I copied gnurobbo off their disk to my desk top, which copied it. Then I did the cd command, then I did the ls command and it didn't show me anything but a line saying desktop and a few other things like pictures movies etc. so I did cd gnurobbo-0.64 and it says no such file. I have been trying this for a few times and I think I'm going crazy.

I am running a Fedora 10 Virtual Server and get have a feeling I have been hacked. I needed to fix a source file that I had definately not changed myself. It was a PHP file concerned with usernames and passwords so that made me even more suspicious. I have been investigating and found the following. If you need other information give me the command I should run and I will update, I am no expert in this area and use the server to host my website and SVN. I am the only person that has access to the server.
Code:
# lsof -u nobody
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
[code]....
Does anyone know where is the source code for file command?
