Aug 10, 2010How do I know what sound system my Centos 5.5 install is using and how would I configure which soundcard output to use? I want to use the digital coax output from my M-Audio PCI soundcard, which appears to be detected and loaded. When I launch MPD, it autodetects an alsa sound system, but programs like alsamixer don't exist and I can't hear any sound out of the digital coax output. I haven't checked the 3.5mm stereo out yet.A little confused as to which documentation to be looking at at this point.

I have dhcp, nfs and tftp installed, but i can't install/configure XDMCP. I was reading some manuals and "hows to" and all says that, to configure XDMCP, i have to change de atribute "Enable = true" in the file "/etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf", but i don't have this rute, only "/etc/X11/", gdm folder doesnt' appear :S also... why i can configure XDMCP?

Hope you guys can help me with that. The first thing I need is the Flash Player to be able to visualize videos on Firefox.
I'm not shure if there is a bug related to video in this version of Ubuntu, if so I could try another one as I'm just starting to use Linux and Ubuntu and it wouldn't be a problem to restart it all if this could solve this and future problems. I've just downloaded a preview release for Flash Player with native suport for native Linux 64-bit at Adobe. it is called "Flash Player Square" and seems to be unstable, a Beta version.

General :: 'Player' Won't Play CD In Centos - Xine Does
Apr 29, 2009emachines W3115; CentOs 5.3 multiboot, KDE. Sound and video in general has worked fine on this machine. I have played MIDI files, converted them to WAV, and played them with one or more players, including noatun. When I install an audio CD, it brings up a window KDE Daemon which asks if I wish to:
Open in New window Extract and Encode Audio Tracks Play Do nothing. This is standard these days. The problem is, if I click on Play, it brings up a player called "player" which starts running smoothly, but no sound comes out of the speakers. I have no idea what 'player' is. There is no menu on it anywhere. DVD videos work fine, at least the Bonanza one I tried. If I open the CD rom, and right click a .wav file, either 'audio player' or 'mplayer' will play the file. Other choices don't.
*****If I go to the main menu ==> Multimedia and open Xine, then I can click on the CD button on Xine control and it will happily play the entire CD. *****
There are two ways to go on this. Unless someone has an idea what 'player' might be, and some idea how to fix it, another solution which I find suitable is to open XINE, when I click on that window choice stated above when CD is installed, which means I can select ALWAYS.I went to Configure on that mount window, and nothing seemed like it would actually let me configure anything at all. I figurer there is a script file which selects the command when PLAY is selected.
The problem is with a zillion Googles, I get all kinds of player information; all kinds of Centos information; etc., but nothing useful that has anything to do with my problem. how to change PLAY when it asks my choice on an installed CD, so it will run Xine? Note Centos forums does not allow a search on less then 3 characters, which makes it difficult to search for CD information.

Oct 21, 2010I am really fedup from playing .mpg (1080i) videos on linux. I tried to use smplayer or vlc but the video plays so poor, I got like scales (lines) on the video like on the screenshot embedded below (the screenshot I found on the net).
When I play the same video on windows 7 its so great with windows media player 12, when I play it with smplayer or vlc on windows 7 I got the same performance like in linux, its like windows media player has its own mpg hardware accelerator!

I do already have Flash on my computer, which I got from the Ubuntu software centre, and it works for most things but some things tell me I need a newer version.

May 2, 2011I installed Ubuntu 11.04 today and all was working well. I tried playing a video and was prompted to install plugins which worked fine. I then installed Open Shot, Lame and Restricted extras and now when I try to open a video (WMV, AVI, FLV etc) all I get is a prompt to search for suitable Plugin. When I click on search another prompt tells me No packages with the requested plugins were found followed by the name of the requested plugin.ie DivX MPEG-4 Version 5 decoder or Windows Media Video 9 decoder etc.Anybody any ideas how to sort this. I already reinstalled 11.04 from scratch as I had the same problem yesterday. I never had an issue like this before and been using Ubuntu for years.
